“This is a story of longing and loss, of dreams that pull us forward and roots that call us back,” Moreno tells Rolling Stone. “It’s about the silent grief of seeing home fade into a memory, realizing that time moves on even when we wish it didn’t.

Following a six-year hiatus, the next era of “The McConaissance” may be upon us, as Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey returns in the mystery crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King. The thriller has now debuted at SXSW 2025 and is already being hailed as one of the best movies of the year, with McConaughey being praised for his performance as the movie lands a hugely promising score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Written and directed by Andrew Patterson, The Rivals of Amziah King stars Matthew McConaughey as the titular Amziah King alongside Kurt Russell, Cole Sprouse, Owen Teague, Scott Shepherd, Rob Morgan, Tony Revolori, Jake Horowitz, and Angelina LookingGlass as Kateri, and now boasts a near-perfect score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Details of the crime thriller have largely been kept under wraps but, following the debut, we now have some idea of the plot.

Like the Church potluck to which Amziah King introduces his one-time foster daughter Kateri, The Rivals of Amziah King is a gleeful mashup of genres and tones blending bluegrass music, comedy, revenge, and heist-thriller elements into a tasty homestyle buffet full of eccentric characters and thick Southern accents. It’s a strong follow-up to the promise Andrew Patterson displayed in his resourceful debut feature The Vast of Night––even when this mash-up seems a little uneven and indulgent, with a heavy use of formal techniques, from slow-motion to ironic music.
In large part this film’s success stems from its leads: Matthew McConaughey as King, channeling the look and energy of Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A. era, and Angelina LookingGlass as Kateri. They reconnect and King takes her under his wing, providing lessons about his beekeeping profession that double as the kind of life advice he never gave her.

Plot: Following the death of her mother, Kateri (Angelina LookingGlass) reunites with her beloved former foster father, Amziah King (Matthew McConaughey), a honey-maker working in the backwoods of rural Oklahoma.
Review: It’s hard to believe, but it’s been six whole years since Matthew McConaughey has appeared in a film (The Gentlemen). Sure, he’s done some voice work and commercials, but walking into The Rivals of Amziah King, I didn’t realize just how much I missed him until the movie’s bravura opening sequence. In this expertly directed introduction to what’s undoubtedly the best film I saw at SXSW this year, McConaughey’s Amziah pulls up to an outdoor eatery where he meets some friends and jams with them, playing homegrown roots rock, with all of them singing and playing with the type of joy that can’t help but wash over the audience.

In The Rivals of Amziah King, Andrew Patterson crafts a loving portrait of an Oklahoma community around the sweet relationship between a beekeeper and his estranged foster daughter. The director borrows from different genres — nostalgic Westerns, propulsive crime thrillers, high-stakes heist films and even musicals — to tell this winding tale about what makes a place and its people feel like home.
There’s an admirable audacity to the film, which premiered at SXSW; you can feel Patterson, who garnered critical acclaim for his slender and accomplished debut The Vast of Night, exploring new ways to tell a familiar story. But a blinkered narrative coupled with misty-eyed aesthetic choices yield a strange and scattershot result.
The film starts on assured but sentimental footing. Patterson delivers a compelling opening sequence with the glossy finish of a music video. Trucks pull into an outdoor eatery, and out of them emerges a gaggle of...

Though he’s in less than half of Andrew Patterson’s Oklahoma Western “The Rivals of Amziah King,” Matthew McConaughey looms over the film like a myth in human form. His role as the title character, a mandolin-playing beekeeper out of Oklahoma, is also the twangy Oscar winner’s first screen role in six years. And it’s a testament to how mythic McConaughey himself is, and how much we take the Texan’s presence as granted and a given, that his absence from our movies and television didn’t register at all. He, like Amziah, looms regardless.
Oklahoma writer/director Patterson pays homage to his roots — and the people who laid their foundation — in his high-spirited, energetic follow-up to the 2019 Slamdance winner “The Vast of Night.” Where that 1950s-set UFO chiller blended “The X-Files,” B movies, and classic radio dramas, “The Rivals of Amziah King” cross-pollinates a bluegrass musical,...

It’s been six years since Matthew McConaughey starred in a movie, and when you watch “The Rivals of Amziah King,” it’s easy to see why this was the one that lured him back. It gives him a role that fits his scraggly aging-bad-boy redneck charm like a glove — and, at the same time, it’s different from anything he’s ever done.
The film itself is different from anything you’ve ever seen, in ways both good (the first half) and not as good (the second half doesn’t always parse). Yet there’s an audacity to this movie, which is a neorealist beekeeper Western musical revenge fable, that gets inside your system. The director, Andrew Patterson, has a vision — of life, and of how to tell a story — that he enacts with so much confidence and verve that even when what he’s doing doesn’t totally work,...

Matthew McConaughey’s latest film, The Rivals of Amziah King, received a standing ovation during its world premiere at the Paramount Theatre in Austin. The western-musical-drama, directed by Andrew Patterson, played to an engaged audience with its mix of humor, emotion, and music, standing out among the SXSW screenings.
The film follows Amziah King, a musically gifted beekeeper in rural Oklahoma who leads a bluegrass band of misfits while overseeing the town’s most successful honey-making operation. When his estranged foster daughter returns, he sees an opportunity to rebuild their relationship and turn their business into a family enterprise. However, his ambitions are threatened by rivals determined to undermine everything he has built.

Standing ovations are rare at SXSW, but the Matthew McConaughey starring western/musical/drama The Rivals of Amziah King was far more than all right, all right, all right, earning one from the Paramount Theatre crowd in Austin on Monday.
On a sleepy night when all the big studio movies already have played, from out of the blue comes this heartwarming, unconventional feature from filmmaker Andrew Patterson. SXSW launched an Oscar Best Picture winner three years ago in A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once, and it could have another one on their hands if a buyer gets off their butt and takes this WME sales title. There’s been some deliberation and waiting by buyers when it comes to acquiring movies. No need to wait on this one, studios or streamers: This played in the heartland to rolling laughs, tears and cheers tonight.

In 2020 I reviewed a film premiering on Amazon called The Vast of Night, a small southwestern town drama that felt part Twilight Zone, part Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Its debuting filmmaker was Andrew Patterson, and I started my review predicting that based on that movie he was destined to become a very big thing.
Now five years later he has delivered his second film The Rivals of Amziah King, premiering Monday at SXSW, and he is working with much bigger name actors like Matthew McConaughey and Kurt Russell in a larger-scale crime drama/beekeeping/musical/character study, but still keeping it rural and real. Structurally, The Rivals of Amziah King seems to be two or three movie ideas rolled into one (at one point he was planning it as a seven-part limited TV series), which relies on the audience to follow the unfolding saga wherever it wants to take us.

With star Mason Gooding recently teasing Neve Campbell's return for Scream VII, the overarching continuity of the slasher movie universe is beginning to take shape. The popular horror franchise created by Wes Craven in 1996 remained confined to the California suburbs of Woodsboro during the first five installments before branching out to New York City in Scream VI, a reinvigorating departure expected to continue when Scream 7 is released in 2026.
In addition to the coastal change, series mainstay Neve Campbell was noticeably absent from Scream VI due to contract disagreements. Then, Melissa Barrera, was notoriously fired from the franchise following her pro-Palestinian support after Scream IV was released, prompting Campbell's return for Scream 7. Given all the moving parts, casting changes, new settings, and the like, it's worth delineating how Scream V and Scream VI relate to each other narratively and whether the former must be seen to comprehend the latter.

Sony's Spider-Man Universe could have its first real anti-hero protagonist if it released one more Marvel movie. Following Kraven the Hunter's poor box office performance, Sony's Spider-Man Universe will likely be put on an indefinite hold. Therefore, the future of Tom Hardy's Venom, Jared Leto's Morbius, Dakota Johnson's Madame Web, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Kraven the Hunter remains unknown. Still, Venom: The Last Dance may not be the last time the tiltular symbiote will appear on the big screen, as its popularity may give it a chance to return, eventually.
One of the biggest complaints about Sony's Spider-Man Universe is its tendency to turn traditionally evil villains into rather heroic anti-heroes. Tom Hardy's Venom would have no reason to hate Spider-Man if they ever met, and both Morbius and Kraven fought their respective enemies for a sensible cause. Despite being based on some of Spider-Man's most famous villains,...

Tom Holland and Zendaya are quickly becoming Hollywood's most powerful young new couple. The former has portrayed Spider-Man in three standalone MCU movies to date, as well as two Avengers films. Meanwhile, the latter has had a smash-hit 2024 with Luca Guadagnino's Challengers and Denis Vileneuve's Dune: Part Two, as well as her ongoing role in HBO's seminal Euphoria. The pair have also both been cast in Christopher Nolan's new adaptation of The Odyssey. While the pair often share their time on social media, you'd be hard-pressed to find them on a red carpet together. In a recent interview with Men's Health, Tom Holland revealed the wholesome reason why.
"It’s not my moment," the actor said, explaining why he doesn't walk the red carpet at Zendaya's movie premieres. The pair have, respectively, been part of some of the biggest movies of all-time over the last few years.

Imagine you're going to the grocery store to pick up a few things – and perhaps sneer at the price of organic eggs – when all of a sudden a fight breaks out, and you find yourself in the middle of the ruckus, pulling apart the two brawlers only to have one of them recognize you as a global superstar. That's exactly what happened to Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland, who says his fame helped defuse the situation.
Holland is, of course, the MCU star who's appeared in three Spider-Man films, a couple of Avengers movies, and one Captain America flick. Since its launch, Disney+ has become one of the biggest streaming platforms out there. Disney+ launched on November 12, 2019, wherein it was rolled out globally over the course of two years. The launch of this platform would give viewers exclusive access to their favorite Disney classics as well as Pixar films like the Toy Story series and more. Because of Disney's absorption of both Marvel and Fox, the launch of the platform also meant that slowly but surely, streaming subscribers would find that their favorite MCU films were migrating over to Disney+.
That said, Disney+ has not been without its controversies. This includes criticism about their content itself, with this year's Star Wars series The Acolyte being a particularly egregious example of the fan base being disappointed with the direction that Disney was taking a franchise. In 2024 alone, he appeared in Kinds of Kindness, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Saturday Night, and Nosferatu. While promoting the latter, in which the actor plays a Van Helsing-like character hell-bent on destroying the evil Count Orlock, Dafoe was asked by Entertainment Tonight about one of his most iconic characters, Norman Osborn Aka Green Goblin, and whether he might reprise the role in Marvel's upcoming Spider-Man 4. As Spider-Man fans wait on tenterhooks (or should that be tenter-webs?) for Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4, the first plot details have finally been revealed. Jon Watts' trilogy was rounded out with the world forgetting who Peter Parker was. Following the death of Aunt May, and with the Multiverse about to collapse, the three Peter Parkers and Doctor Strange return the Spider-Man villains to their home worlds, but not without a devastating consequence. Everyone, including Parker's closest friends, forgot who he was.
Speaking to Deadline, producer Amy Pascal revealed how Spider-Man 4 will continue the story following No Way Home's emotional ending. One of the most famous Spider-Man comics of all-time sees Peter Parker give up being Spider-Man, but the new movie is flipping the script.
"We have to deal with the fact that he decided he was going to give up being Peter Parker," Pascal said. "And that...

Venom: The Last Dance may not have made as big a splash at the box office as the previous movies in the franchise, but the final part of Sony Pictures' trilogy is proving difficult to knock off the top spot.
The Last Dance took in $16.2 million from 3,905 North American theaters, which was enough to fend off competition from A24’s horror thriller Heretic and Lionsgate’s family friendly The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.
The studio's latest Ssu movie - which sits at 41% on Rotten Tomatoes - has now grossed $279.4 million overseas and $394.2 million globally on a relatively modest budget of $120 million.
This might well be the last Venom movie, but a recent rumor claimed that Sony is developing an Agent Venom film.
In the comics, Agent Venom was Peter Parker's former bully turned friend Eugene "Flash" Thompson, who bonded with the Venom Symbiote after losing his legs in service of his country.

Matthew Lillard played one of the original Ghostfaces, Stu Macher, alongside Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) in Wes Craven's Scream, and despite the character seemingly meeting a violent end, fans continue to speculate and theorize that the deranged killer could return in the upcoming Scream 7.
Stu appeared to be pretty definitively killed off during the climax of the movie, but we have seen plenty of people survive what should be fatal wounds in the franchise, so who knows?
For his part, Lillard has said that he believes Stu is still alive, and would be happy to reprise the role if that was something fans wanted to see.
“Stu is definitely alive, right? My character Stu is definitely alive. I would love it. If it made sense for the franchise. If Kevin [Williamson] liked it. Then sure. Obviously.”

Attention: The Following Report Is A Rumor. Please Take The Following Story With A Grain Of Salt.
Sony’s latest installment of their expanded universe of Spider-Verse films, Venom: The Last Dance, is doing rather well at the moment. After nearly two weeks at the box office the movie has made $319 million against a budget of $160 million. Most of the box office, however, is thanks to the overseas market which the franchise has done rather well in.
Now, with the end of this trilogy, not much is known about what the future holds as the titular alien antihero… well… kinda dies at the end. The alien symbiotic sacrifices itself to protect the Earth from the villainous Knull (who was teased to be a major threat in the franchise’s future). However, without Venom, who will step up to battle the forces of evil?

Sony Pictures made it clear that Venom: The Last Dance would be the final part of a trilogy, and while the movie did appear to wrap-up Eddie Brock and his Symbiote pal's story, we may now know how the studio is planning to keep the franchise going.

The Scream killers continue to build following Scream 6, and the Ghostface mask has been worn by almost 20 different people. Throughout the six movies, an impressive number of characters have worn the Ghostface mask, which is only added to with the franchises TV series. While many got their hands dirty with the killings, others acted more like masterminds or distractions. Scream VI follows the fun of looking at the movie's ensemble and trying to decide who plays Ghostface before the final unmasking reveals it all.

Andrew Garfield has a promising update about his potential return in Spider-Man 4. He has yet to confirm that would happen but he's increasingly vocal about his conditions for reprising the role.
Spider-Man 4 is confirmed in early development, yet none of the lead actors from No Way Home have explicitly confirmed they would return. Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield have addressed the prospect on multiple occasions, and both are eager about the concept; while Holland was largely transparent about his hopes for the project, Garfield's comments were coy and loaded. He's yet to deny rumors of another crossover. Returning Scream star Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott) and new director Kevin Williamson recently announced that the seventh movie - which is seemingly being referred to as Scream 7 (ditching the Roman numerals) for the time being - is set to hit theaters on Feb. 27, 2026, and we may now have a better idea of what to expect from this latest instalment in the long-running slasher franchise.

After starring alongside Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Andrew Garfield recently revealed who his favorite all-time Spider-Man is and spoiler, it's not himself.
In Vanity Fair's most recent "Test How Well You Know Each Other" video, Garfield sat down with We Live in Time co-star Florence Pugh, who attempted to answer who she believed Garfield's favorite on-screen Spider-Man was. Pugh couldn't guess, so Garfield revealed that Maguire was his favorite, saying, "Tobey was my guy." Garfield would further reveal that as an aspiring actor, he looked up to Maguire, but was sure not to diss Holland in the process. "I was in drama school and I was watching his films as a young impressionable actor and I was like practicing being him. But I love, I think what Tom has done is incredible as well. Like, I kind of love them both equally."

Marvel fans are still in the dark over who will be the main villain of the forthcoming Spider-Man 4, but it is unlikely to be Michael Keaton's Vulture. The Spider-Man: Homecoming actor recently revealed that he has not yet been asked to return as the Spidey villain for the fourth Tom Holland-led Spider-Man movie.
During an interview with Screen Rant to promote his upcoming comedy movie Goodrich, Keaton was asked if Amy Pascal who produced both Spider-Man: Homecoming and Goodrich had been in touch about returning for Spider-Man 4 as Adrian Toomes/The Vulture. "Oh, wow. That's an interesting character, that guy. Actually, I was there for a minute in the second one... That really was fun experience, but I haven't talked to anybody about anything," Keaton shared, before jokingly adding, "I try not to talk to anybody. I really don't like people."

Tom Hardy is bidding farewell to Venom, but the Symbiote's heavily-rumored MCU debut twists the story of one Thunderbolts* antihero in this shocking new theory. Following the upcoming release of Sony's Venom: The Last Dance, Tom Hardy is expected to retire from the role of Eddie Brock, leaving Venom's live-action future uncertain. However, there is speculation that Venom will cross over into Marvel Studios' MCU, which creates many new opportunities for the alien Symbiote, especially when it comes to his choice of host.
Eddie Brock has been Venom's only live-action host, whether that be Tom Hardy's character from Sony's Spider-Man Universe or the version played by Topher Grace in 2007's Spider-Man 3. In Marvel Comics, however, Venom attaches himself to many more characters than just journalist Brock, including the likes of Peter Parker, Mac Gargan, Lee Price, Malekith the Dark Elf and Flash Thompson.
