When rising country singer Ella Langley sang “You Look Like You Love Me,” the Academy of Country Music was apparently powerless to do anything but respond: mm-hm. In a surprising turn, Langley is the leading nominee for the 2025 ACM Awards, ahead of the pack with nine nominations in a field that was revealed Thursday morning.

Just behind Langley with eight nominations were Lainey Wilson, Cody Johnson and Morgan Wallen, tied with seven each. Chris Stapleton was close behind that pack with six noms, followed by Post Malone and Riley Green, with five each, and Kelsea Ballerini with four.

The ACMs allow seven nominees for the organization’s top prize, entertainer of the year, and the reigning champion from 2024, Wilson, is back in contention to defend her title this year. Country singer Charles Kelley is going to be a dad! The Lady A singer and his wife Cassie Kelley announced they are expecting their second baby together. The news comes one month after Charles’ fellow bandmate Hilary Scott announced her pregnancy.

In a joint Instagram post, the couple shared images from a maternity photoshoot that featured their nine-year-old son Ward Charles. “Biggest surprise of our lives!” Cassie began in the caption before sharing that the couple’s baby would arrive this fall and giving an update on how Ward feels about getting a sibling. “Baby Kelley coming early fall 2025 Big brother is the Most excited.”

Hosted by Blake Shelton, the three-hour special airs on NBC and will stream live on Peacock.

A lineup of performances for Wednesday night’s “Opry 100: A Live Celebration” special on NBC has been revealed, with many of today’s top country superstars slated to pay tribute to the legends of previous generations, and some doing their own enduring hits as well.

One First Couple of Country will salute another First Couple when Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood team up to honor the late George Jones and Tammy Wynette on the show, which will also be available for viewing on Peacock.

Veteran film producer Eric Groth and writer-director Andrew Hyatt of Sacred Arthouse are teaming with Zach Dasher and Korie Robertson on Forever and Ever, Amen, a biopic about the life of country music legend Randy Travis. Hyatt will direct off of his own script.

The Grand Ole Opry played host to the announcement of the biopic Wednesday night that included performances by Travis’ friends including country star Clay Walker, Collin Raye, Lady A, James Dupré and more. Zach Dasher and Korie Robertson from Tread Lively will produce.

The pic is currently being cast by Anne McCarthy, Kellie Roy and Morgan Robbins at Engine Casting, and production has established that Travis will be played by three actors of different ages. Walker will play Travis in his 40s and 50s and executive produce alongside Travis and his wife Mary Travis.

Attention, MTV Generation, your ship has come in! Paramount+ is opening the floodgates to bring classic episodes of MTV Unplugged, VH1 Storytellers, and CMT Crossroads to the streaming platform. A massive trove of live performances from the late-Nineties/early-Aughts glory days of music television has finally made it to the streaming era, with Paramount+ uploading old episodes of MTV Unplugged, CMT Crossroads, and VH1 Storytellers.

As Billboard notes, these collections aren’t entirely comprehensive, with random episodes and full seasons missing here and there for all three programs. Nevertheless, there’s still a deep assortment of classic performances to dig through, including most of the episodes that appeared on Rolling Stone’s list of the 15 Best Episodes of MTV Unplugged.

Leslie Fram, CMT’s senior VP of music strategy and talent for some 13 years, penned a farewell letter to the staff that she posted on social media Tuesday, just days after the channel was gutted by the network-wide layoffs at its parent company Paramount Global.

Fram is a longtime major player in the country-music community who oversaw the channel’s music programming overs on all verticals as well as the CMT Music Awards and franchises like CMT Storytellers, Giants and Crossroads, among other responsibilities. Yet her stature in Nashville reaches far beyond the channel, as is evident in her farewell letter:

“Among my proudest achievements has been our decade+ support of women with CMT’s ‘Next Women of Country,’ a program that has helped promote and elevate over 100 female artists on all platforms, and our efforts to move the format forward in areas of inclusion and diversity,” she writes. She...

Songs by Adele, Kendrick Lamar, Bob Dylan, Nirvana, Green Day and Mariah Carey, among others, are returning to YouTube after a contract dispute between the platform and Sesac, a performing rights organization, was resolved.

A YouTube spokesperson shared in a statement with The Hollywood Reporter on Monday, “We’re pleased that Sesac reconsidered our offer. We’ve reached a deal and content will come back up shortly. We appreciate everyone’s patience during this time.”

Earlier, some songs by several artists were met with this message when attempting to be played: “This video contains content from Sesac. It is not available in your country.”

This ain’t Texas — but the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards is fans’ opportunity to choose who they think should take home a trophy for their contributions to country music.

The two-hour event will be hosted by country music legend Shania Twain, and several big names in country music will take the stage as presenters, including Ashley Cooke, Bailey Zimmerman, Chase Rice and Cody Rhodes.

The stage is set for the People’s Choice Country Awards 2024, which will honor the best in country music as chosen by fans.

Lambert is set to receive the Country Icon Award and Kane Brown will receive the Country Champion Award.

Idris Elba will help bring to the screen Chinua Achebe’s 1958 debut novel Things Fall Apart.

The Hijack and Luthor actor will star in a series adaptation which is in the works at the studio A24, our sister site Variety reports. Additionally, Elba will executive-produce alongside Gina Carter, David Oyelowo and Amanda N’Duka (of production company Yoruba Saxon), Ben Forkner, Dayo Ogunyemi and Achebe Masterworks.

Hold your horses, the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards is loading into the stables as we type. The live two-hour event will be hosted by five-time Grammy Award-winning country music legend Shania Twain.

The second annual 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards kicks off at 8 p.m. Est on Thursday, Sept. 26 on NBC and will also be streaming on Peacock.

Sky Ferreira made a surprise cameo at Coachella Saturday when the singer appeared onstage before Kevin Abstract’s set to deliver a cover of Lady A’s “Need You Now.”

Without any official announcement, the leather jacket and sunglasses-clad Ferreira sauntered out onstage to the shock of fans, and promptly debuted her synth-laden (and unfortunately abridged) rendition of the smash single by the country band formerly known as Lady Antebellum.

Luke Combs is the man of the hour. The 59th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, April 9, and Combs came out on top with eight bids, including Entertainer of the Year. Check out the complete list of nominations here.

This is Combs’s fifth nomination in a row for Entertainer of the Year, an award he has yet to win. This year he’s up against Kane Brown, Jelly Roll, Cody Johnson, Chris Stapleton, Morgan Wallen and lone female nominee Lainey Wilson. Women are consistently underrepresented in Entertainer of the Year, though Carrie Underwood won in 2020 (in a tie with Thomas Rhett) and Miranda Lambert finally prevailed in 2022. But we mustn’t underestimate Wilson here. She pulled off a huge upset at the CMA Awards last fall, claiming Entertainer of the Year despite being relatively new on the scene.

Country musician Colt Ford is in “stable but critical condition” after a post-concert heart attack left him hospitalized.

Ford, 54, performed in Arizona on Thursday night at Dierks Bentley‘s Whiskey Row. Following the show, Ford suffered a heart attack. Ford is being cared for in the intensive care unit in Mesa, Arizona, located near Phoenix.

Ford is known for his mix of country and rap in his music. The musician was formerly a professional golfer and went on the Nationwide Tour. Ford released his debut album in 2008. Ford co-wrote and recorded a version of “Dirt Road Anthem,” also sung by Jason Aldean and released on Aldean’s album My Kinda Country.

Ford has since collaborated with other country music artists such as Keith Urban and Lady A.

In May 2023, Ford revealed he had an autoimmune disease called Myasthenia Gravis. The disease, which affects the facial, eyes and throat muscles, has no known cure.

Dolly Parton honored Tom Petty with a gorgeous cover of his 1985 song, “Southern Accents,” which will appear on the upcoming tribute compilation Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty.

“Southern Accents” is a tender ballad about Southern roots and a down-on-his luck Florida orange-picker. Parton stays faithful to the original, adding her own country twang, and juicing the poignancy further with a music video filled with old archival footage of Petty.

“I was fortunate enough to get to know Tom over the years,” Parton said in a statement.

Dolly Parton has revealed her reimagined rendition of Tom Petty’s song “Southern Accents” for the forthcoming compilation, Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty.

The song features a prologue delivered by the late Tom Petty himself describing how the moment of inspiration that led to “Southern Accents.” Dolly Parton then provides an emotional, stirring rendition of the song, kept at the same balladeer tempo as Petty’s original. She retains much of the song, though she adds a crucial change to the song’s latter third when belting “Yes I’m proud to be what I am/ A southern girl from a southern town/ I ain’t ashamed, I ain’t ashamed, I ain’t ashamed.”

It’s a move with any number of purposes: to show an artist’s range of influences, to reel in a drifting crowd with a massive hit, to appeal to a wider audience, or to highlight how fluid and arbitrary genre borders really are when you strip a song back to its essentials.

The Grammy for Best Country Song has gone to some of the most iconic tunes ever in the genre. From all-time classics like Glen Campbell‘s “Gentle on My Mind” and Willie Nelson‘s “On the Road Again” to modern smash hits like Lady A’s “Need You Now” and critically acclaimed gems like Kacey Musgraves’s “Space Cowboy,” voters are often very careful and accurate in awarding the very best in country music.
