Military veterans planning to see “Warfare” on the big screen will get a special thanks for their service — in the form of discounted tickets.
Beginning this weekend, AMC, Cinemark and Regal, three of the largest movie chains in the U.S, will honor discounted tickets to the A24 movie for anyone with a military ID at their theaters nationwide.
“Warfare” embeds audiences with a platoon of U.S. Navy SEALs on a surveillance mission gone wrong during the war in Iraq. The film is co-directed by Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, whose real-life experience during the harrowing 2006 mission serves as the basis for the movie. The 94-minute film takes place in real time and is an intense, visceral recreation of events, based on the memories of those who were there. “Warfare” is dedicated to Elliott Miller (played by Cosmo Jarvis), who was wounded in combat during the operation.

The take was too perfect. Ray Mendoza, the first-time director of Warfare, was watching D’Pharoah Woon-a-Tai drag the limp, unconscious body of Cosmo Jarvis away from the wreckage of a massive explosion. Smoke, gunfire, screaming everywhere. And then there was the noise erupting from Woon-a-Tai as he struggled to pull Jarvis to safety — exactly how Mendoza remembered it from when he was a Navy Seal, dragging the limp, unconscious body of Elliot Miller away from the wreckage of a massive explosion.

“As a culture, we’re not supposed to tell stories. We’re not supposed to make movies,” says Navy Seal turned filmmaker Ray Mendoza when asked about portraying combat onscreen. But for his new film, Warfare, Mendoza and co-director Alex Garland recreated a personal story from Mendoza’s military time onscreen.
Warfare (out now via A24) is a retelling of a day during the Battle of Ramadi in the Iraq War that saw Mendoza’s platoon attempt to evacuate two members of their team after they were severely wounded in an Ied explosion. The film is told in real-time, a stripped-down moment-by-moment rendering with minimal filmmaking flourishes.
“All the departments [on set] have a very similar structure to the military,” says Mendoza. “[It’s] multiple departments, working in concert with each other, to achieve one objective or vision.” After appearing on screen in Act of Valor, the 2012 film that used active duty SEALs as actors,...

“Warfare” is an exceedingly realistic war film. The new A24 thriller from co-directors Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza depicts in real-time an Iraq War firefight that goes increasingly wrong for a troop of Navy SEALs. Its ensemble cast features up-and-coming Hollywood stars like Joseph Quinn (“The Fantastic Four: First Steps”), Will Poulter (“The Bear”), Charles Melton (“May December”), Cosmo Jarvis (“Shogun”) and Michael Gandolfini (“Daredevil: Born Again”).
The film marks the directorial debut of Mendoza, an Iraq War veteran who met Garland while serving as a military advisor on the latter’s “Civil War.” On the set of that film, Garland was reportedly struck by Mendoza’s knowledge and perspective, and the two teamed up to make “Warfare,” a film that strives to capture what real-world military combat is like more realistically than any other Hollywood production to date.

Alex Garland offered an intriguing take on the current state of the world with the feature Civil War. Yet his latest is, for this viewer, one of his best. Co-directed by Garland and Ray Mendoza, the latter brings this terrifying experience to life. Mendoza offers his experience as a US Navy Seal to blistering heights with this ferociously intense drama. The cast includes Will Poulter, D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai, Joseph Quinn, Noah Centineo, Charles Melton Cosmo Jarvis, and many more. It’s an exceptional and extremely potent feature. The sound and the visuals all feel about as intense as a war film could possibly feel. With Garland’s style and Mendoza’s knowledge, Warfare is one of the most chilling war movies I’ve ever witnessed.

Joseph Quinn’s much-anticipated project of the year will be The Fantastic Four: First Steps, but right now, critics are raving about his another performance. He has heaped praises from moviegoers for his gut-wrenching acting performance in Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza’s war-action film, Warfare.
Quinn plays the role of leading Petty Officer Sam, a character based on the real-life Navy Seal veteran Joe Hildebrand. Through Quinn’s character, the film explores Hildebrand’s experience with Ptsd and trauma during his time in the service. From the words of the critics, it appears that Quinn was exceptional in the role.

Directed by Alex Garland and the Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza, Warfareopened with the one-two punch of excellent reviews and amazing audience response this week. The movie isn’t an easy one to watch; scene after scene is dedicated to depicting the grim realities of modern warfare. But it seems to have struck a chord with folks, and will likely deliver strong holds in the coming weeks. Warfare opened to solid numbers this weekend, and while it couldn’t match the high benchmark of Garland’s last film, Civil War, it bucked the trends that are normally attached to movies about recent geopolitical conflicts.
Films set against the backdrop of the Iraq War — Green Zone and Stop-Loss come to mind — have a poor track record at the box office. But fortunately, Warfare didn’t cost all that much. Produced on a reported budget of $20 million — this is $30 million less than...

There’s no slowing down A Minecraft Movie, which hurtled past the $550 million mark at the global box office on its way to likely becoming the first title of 2025 to join the $1 billion club.
The Warner Bros. family event pic easily stayed No. 1 in its second weekend with a huge domestic haul of $80.6 million. It has now earned $281 million in North America and $296.6 million overseas for a worldwide total of $550.6 million. The foreign tally includes $20.5 million from China, one of the best showings in recent memory for a Hollywood title (Legendary East is handling the film there). However, Minecraft did tumble 68 percent in its second weekend after the Chinese government said it would further restrict film imports amid the ongoing tariff war with the Trump administration.

The movie "Warfare," as co-directed by Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, is one of the most directly visceral war films ever made. The filmmakers' camera hangs, like a fascinated extraterrestrial, on tiny details, observing them as if they were recording biological field notes. Viewers can practically feel the textures of the soldiers' guns, the weight of their enormous uniforms, and the temperature of the rooms they're in. When the IEDs begin exploding, the audio begins to fade in and out, the film's boom mics seemingly existing within the ears of whatever soldier we're looking at during that moment. There's a lot of screaming and bleeding and panic.
"Warfare" takes place in Iraq in 2006, detailing a very specific battle during George W. Bush's broad and chaotic War on Terror. Garland and Mendoza constructed their film entirely from the memories of the soldiers involved, and built the film's sets based on...

While finishing “Civil War,” sound designer Glenn Freemantle and supervising sound editor Ben Barker were informed by director Alex Garland that his next film — “Warfare” — based on a real-life mission in Iraq, would be even smaller and contain no music. They were all in. But little did Freemantle and Barker realize what a subjective and immersive sound experience they were in for.

Warfare, co-directed and co-written by Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, draws from firsthand accounts of a Navy Seal mission in Ramadi, Iraq, in November 2006. The script is based entirely on the memories of Mendoza and his fellow SEALs, offering a close-up view of an overnight surveillance operation that shifted into active conflict.
The film begins with a unit of Navy SEALs splitting into three teams. Their task: occupy a residential building under cover of darkness to observe enemy movement and secure the area for incoming ground forces. The mission, carried out in a region known for Al Qaeda activity, unfolds in confined interior spaces with little exposition and minimal dialogue. Military jargon is used without translation, and characters are shown as coordinated parts of a functioning team rather than as individually profiled figures.

Alex Garland returns to the war drama genre, but this time sets it during a real war instead of a dystopian future like Civil War. A24’s Warfare is co-directed by Garland along with Iraq War veteran and former Navy Seal Roy Mendoza, who makes his directorial debut. Many war films, no matter the location, the feats of heroism, or the bonds that are made amidst the bloodshed, end up being reminiscent of others in the process. You'd be forgiven, then, for making those comparisons before going into "Warfare," the new film from co-directors Alex Garland and former U.S. Navy Seal Ray Mendoza, whose personal experiences are the basis of the movie which, through its nightmarish depiction of its subject matter redefines what makes a war movie in the process. What might come as a surprise, however, is that amidst the chaos and barbarity unfolding around Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Joseph Quinn, and "Daredevil: Born Again's" Michael Gandolfini, inspiration was found in a 1998 Gwyneth Paltrow-starring rom-com.

Plot: A team of Navy Seals are pinned down in a two-story house in the middle of insurgent territory during the Battle of Ramadi.
Review: Francois Truffaut once famously stated that there was no such thing as an anti-war film. His reasoning for this was that, by the way the medium works, there’s always something dazzling about the way such a film is mounted that can’t help but glamorize a terrifying situation. Granted, I’m not the only critic who pulled out this old chestnut for my Warfare review but speak to any vet, and they’ll tell you that Hollywood gets it wrong more often than it gets it right. I vividly remember our former Eic here at JoBlo, Paul Shirey, a combat vet, telling me that he thought The Hurt Locker was utterly preposterous. Michael Gandolfini’s Transformative ‘Warfare’ Journey Included a Surprising Connection to His Father

A week before Christmas 2023, Michael Gandolfini was lying on the floor of his Airbnb in Los Angeles with his phone taped to the ceiling. He was attempting to video a self-tape for a scene that, as scripted, needed him on the ground, and with no one around that particular day to help, he improvised. Tape meet phone meet the ceiling.
It was unusual to get asked to audition so close to the holidays, and he didn’t have the ideal setup. But the project, Warfare, was one he didn’t want to pass up.
Based on the experiences of co-director Ray Mendoza’s time in the Navy SEALs, Warfare (out this weekend via A24) is a retelling of the day during the Battle of Ramadi in the Iraq War that saw Mendoza’s platoon attempt to evacuate two members of their team after they were severely wounded in an Ied explosion.

Warner Bros bet on Robert De Niro’s gangster appeal and doubled down on it with a dual role in The Alto Knights, but the audience has spoken, and the box office doesn’t look so good, nor are critics happy with this feature from veteran director Barry Levinson. While the movie had all the right talents attached, it fell short on its appeal to the fans, and De Niro’s dual role didn’t help. But there’s still hope, as the studio has released the movie on VOD.
Fans of Levinson and De Niro, who couldn’t make it to the theatres now, have the opportunity to watch the movie at the ease of their homes. Furthermore, the movie will be released on Blu-Ray on May 27 with bonus content. The movie casts De Niro as not one but two real-life figures from the world of organized crime during the mid-1900s.

Warfare is an intense, immersive experience of war that recalls the opening sequence of Saving Private Ryan but in this case, it is most of the film. Told in real-time, it recreates the experiences of a group of U.S. Navy Seals during an Iraq War operation that goes terribly wrong. The realism is electrifying and unblinking, with a script drawn entirely from the memories of the people who were there. Co-written and co-directed by one of the Iraq War veterans who was a part of that operation, Ray Mendoza, and Alex Garland, director of Civil War and 28 Days Later. The film stars a line up of rising young stars, including Will Poulter, D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Taylor John Smith, and Michael Gandolfini.

After telling a fictional, dystopian war story in “Civil War” last year, director Alex Garland is back with his next film, and this one gets a bit more real.
Hitting theaters on Friday, “Warfare” takes viewers on a mission with Navy Seals — one that’s based on an actual mission that co-director Ray Mendoza himself experienced (more on that in a moment). When things go sideways, the platoon must stand together and survive insurgent territory.
Here’s everything you need to know about the movie.
What is the release date?
“Warfare” releases nationwide on April 11, 2025.
Is it streaming?
Nope. As an A24 film, “Warfare” is only going to be in theaters for the time being. As part of A24’s output deal with Max the film will eventually be streaming on Max, and we’ll update this story when a streaming release date is announced.
For now, check your local listings to buy tickets.

An idea came to director Alex Garland on the set of his thought-provoking action extravaganza “Civil War.” Soon, the idea consumed him.
He was watching military advisor Ray Mendoza during a scene when our intrepid band of journalists finally infiltrate the White House. Garland had already been impressed with Mendoza – “seeing how much he understood about the way film sets work but crucially, how well he worked with actors and performers,” Garland told TheWrap. In that sequence in particular, his knowledge and precision extended to the editing process. “Something that came out of cutting it in a certain kind of way, which was to not have any time compressions,” Garland said. Instead, Garland wanted to “show the strange staccato rhythms of the sequence that Ray had created, with people who were themselves experienced with combat.”

The stars have been found for Netflix’s forthcoming series adaptation of Jane Austen’s iconic romance novel Pride & Prejudice. This comes ahead of the 20th anniversary celebration of director Joe Wright’s 2005 movie remake, which was led by Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen.
As announced by Netflix, Jack Lowden has been announced to play the leading role of Mr. Darcy, who was famously played by Colin Firth in the 1995 miniseries, and by Macfadyen in the 2005 film adaptation. In the story, Mr. Darcy is introduced as a wealthy young gentleman. Even though she finds him handsome and interesting, the smart and free-spirited Elizabeth Bennet was turned off by his arrogance and aloofness. Despite their terrible first impressions, they suddenly find themselves slowly gravitating towards each other each time they meet.

Netflix is adapting Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice, and they've already assembled an all-star cast for the oft-adapted work. Yesterday, Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) was rumored to be in talks to play Mr. Darcy, and we now know that Emma Corrin (Nosferatu) will join him as female lead Elizabeth Bennet, and Olivia Colman (The Favourite) will play Mrs. Bennet. Deadline reports that the production will be a six-episode miniseries, and will film in the UK later this year.
The series will be written by Dolly Alderton (Everything I Know About Love) and directed by Euros Lyn (Heartstopper). Says Alderton, "Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story, and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it. “A Minecraft Movie” will lead the box office again as several newcomers, including Universal and Blumhouse’s pulse-quickening “Drop” and Rami Malek-led spy thriller “The Amateur,” open this weekend on the big screen.
Warner Bros. and Legendary’s PG comedy “Minecraft” topped the box office last weekend with a record-breaking $162.7 million, the biggest debut of the year and largest ever for a video game adaptation. In its second weekend, “A Minecraft Movie” is projecting a 50% to 60% decline with ticket sales around $65 million to $82 million. However given its trajectory, box office watchers wouldn’t be surprised if it lands in the realm of Universal’s video game smash “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (which declined by just 37% in its second weekend with $92 million) or “Barbie” (another unexpected blockbuster that opened to $162 million and dropped by 42% in its sophomore outing with $93 million). “Minecraft” has generated more than $320 million globally so far...

It’s difficult to zero in on just one leading man in Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza’s bracing, fact-based feature “Warfare.” Is it “Reservation Dogs” lead D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai, playing former Navy Seal Mendoza himself? What about perpetual favorite Will Poulter, as Officer in Charge Erik? Maybe Kit Connor as the cherub-cheeked newbie Tommy? How about Charles Melton, Joseph Quinn, or Noah Centineo? Hell, there are so many stars in the film that we had to make a guide to ID all of them.
Yet by the end of this hyper-intense film, when a single-line dedication pops up onscreen, it’s clear who this was for and about. “For Elliott,” we’re told. “Elliott” is former Navy Seal Elliott Miller, played in the film by “Shōgun” and “Lady Macbeth” star Cosmo Jarvis. They say nothing forms stronger bonds than the shared experience of combat, and that the feeling of deep fraternity forged under fire is as close, if not closer, than the love one harbors for family and country. Warfare understands this. A movie about a single siege on a single day in 2006 — one given a stunning sense of verisimilitude by filmmaker/real-life participant Ray Mendoza, and a hyperventilating sense of dread by his co-director/longtime apocalypse-channeler Alex Garland — this extraordinary portrait of a military firefight works double-time to recreate what it...

Warfare stars Joseph Quinn and Charles Melton were honored to help pay tribute to retired U.S. Navy Seal Elliott Miller on behalf of co-directors Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland.
Mendoza, who’s also a retired Seal himself, previously worked as the military advisor on Garland’s Civil War and contributed to the design of its battle sequences. Along the way, he struck up a friendship with the English filmmaker, before sharing the story of his fellow Seal, Miller, and the rest of their platoon’s evacuation during a 2006 mission in Al Qaeda-controlled territory of Ramadi, Iraq. Upon wrapping Civil War, Garland decided to turn the harrowing account in their follow-up film, anointing Mendoza as co-writer and co-director of Warfare.

A scene from ‘Warfare’ (Photo Credit: Murray Close / A24)
Warfare skips the backstories, skips the reasons behind why American boots are on foreign soil, and instead is laser-focused on a specific 2006 mission in Ramadi, Iraq. By eschewing every Hollywood war movie trope, Warfare catapults the genre into striking new territory.
What co-writers/co-directors Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland deliver is a visceral and unrelenting examination of the effects of war on the men and women who serve our country. It’s not glamorous. There aren’t any shirtless hunks working out and cracking jokes about their wives or girlfriends back home. We’re never even told anything about the private lives of the men involved in the mission. That alone sets Warfare apart from decades of war films.

As we step into April 2025, the cinematic landscape has already experienced a diverse array of movie releases, each leaving its mark on audiences and critics alike. Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White encountered significant challenges. Despite its ambitious $270 million budget, the film garnered only $146 million worldwide, leading to an anticipated loss of approximately $115 million. The project was marred by controversies, including casting choices and public statements by lead actress Rachel Zegler, which contributed to its underwhelming performance.
In contrast, Paddington in Peru charmed audiences and critics, achieving a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 91% audience score. The film’s heartwarming narrative and engaging performances translated to a domestic box office gross of $41.3 million. The spy thriller Black Bag, featuring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender, faced a lukewarm reception. With a modest box office return of just over $31 million against its $60 million budget, the film struggled to captivate audiences despite its star-studded cast.

Writer-director Alex Garlandhas always had a hit-or-miss relationship with both critics and audiences. His horror film Men infamously received a D+ CinemaScore from opening day crowds, signaling a severe dislike of the film from the average moviegoer. The movie did, however, impress a section of critics. Garland’s latest film, Warfare, isn’t as divisive. He directed the movie with Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza, and would be hoping that it repeats the success that he saw with last year’s dystopian thriller Civil War. Warfare is off to a strong start, having earned the best Rotten Tomatoes score of Garland’s career.

After the astounding success of Oppenhiemer, backed by his almost flawless filmography, hopes are incredibly high for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. The upcoming historical epic, based on the epic Greek play by Homer, was part of Universal's presentation at this year's Cinema Con. While the studio didn't have any new footage to unveil, as filming is currently ongoing, the movie was hailed as nothing short of a "masterpiece" by Jim Orr, Universal Pictures' president of domestic theatrical distribution.

Christopher Nolan did not make it to CinemaCon this year — the Oscar-winning auteur is deep in production on his upcoming epic The Odyssey — but his name did come up on the main stage.
During Universal Pictures’ presentation inside the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, the studio’s president of domestic theatrical distribution, Jim Orr, took the stage and praised Nolan’s “visionary take” on the story. “We know this film will be a once-in-a-generation cinematic masterpiece that Homer himself would be very proud of,” he said.
The film is being described by Universal as a “mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new Imax film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to Imax film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.”
Orr also took a moment to single out how Nolan “assembled a staggering all-star cast.” Indeed it is.

Director Alex Garland said it “made sense” to shoot his Iraq-set combat feature Warfare in the UK to allow the production to accurately recreate theRamadi street, in which all of the action takes place, atBovingdon Airfield Studios in Hertfordshire.
“We had two choices,” the director told Screen at the UK premiere on April 1. “One of them would have been to go to various Middle Eastern and North African countries to try to find a street that approximated the street where this took place.
“But the whole focus on the film was to be as accurate as possible, and so it...

A harrowing 2006 Navy Seal mission in Ramadi, Iraq, comes to brutally authentic life in “Warfare,” the latest collaboration between “Civil War” director Alex Garland and military veteran Ray Mendoza.
At Tuesday’s U.K. premiere, the filmmakers revealed how their refusal to moralize about combat emerged from a shared commitment to truth-telling in a medium often prone to seduction.
The project emerged from Garland and Mendoza’s previous collaboration on “Civil War,” where Mendoza served as military advisor. During that production, Garland was struck by the authenticity Mendoza brought to a scene where soldiers navigate a corridor toward the Oval Office.
“It had a kind of electricity attached to it,” Garland explained during the pre-screening Q&a. “What I could see floating out was some truth, some reality about how these guys function.”
This observation sparked the idea for “Warfare” – expanding beyond “five minutes of fictional combat” to create “90 or 100 minutes of recreation,...

Alex Garland is keeping things simple when it comes to talking about his new A24 film, Warfare.
The filmmaker, who co-wrote and directed the movie with former U.S. Navy Seal Ray Mendoza — the 95 minutes all recounted from Mendoza’s memory about a specific 2006 mission in Iraq — wants audiences to know that Warfare has no agenda.
“Everything in the film is sourced from first person account and the film is just attempting to accurately recreate it,” Garland said at the film’s U.K. premiere in London Tuesday night. “That neutral approach, I hope, means people can receive this as adults in their own way with whatever they bring, whatever their opinions are on the Iraq war — it doesn’t matter. This is extra information that they can interpret and take from what they will.”
