Eddie Murphy fought to keep the iconic banana in the tailpipe joke out of the new Beverly Hills Cop sequel. The director kept pushing for the joke, but Murphy insisted on avoiding recycling the gag. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F brings back famous franchise cast members and music, but not the banana in the tailpipe.
Eddie Murphy reveals the one reference to the original Beverly Hills Cop that he fought to keep out of Axel F. Murphys iconic 1980s cop is back in Netflixs streaming sequel, and so too are many elements from the original movies, including the iconic "Axel F" theme song. One joke from Og Beverly Hills Cop that didnt make its way to the sequel, however, is the banana in the tailpipe, a gag that, in the first film, saw Axel foiling police officers on his tail by sabotaging their vehicle in a hilarious way.

There was little doubt that Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F would enjoy quite the debut on Netflix, with the only question being just how well it would do. Well, Netflix announced today that the long-awaited sequel has debuted at the #1 spot on the English Films List with 41 million views, easily making it the most-watched title of the week.
The #2 spot was filled by the romantic comedy A Family Affair, starring Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron. It had 31.9 million views, nearly 10 million less than Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. I still think this film would have done great in theaters, but what can you do?
Now, what does this mean for another Beverly Hills Cop sequel? It likely confirms that Eddie Murphy and producer Jerry Bruckheimer were right to have already started brainstorming ideas. “They’re developing it,” Murphy said at last month’s world premiere. “If it comes together, we’ll be doing another one.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is a hit on Netflix, reuniting Eddie Murphy and Bronson Pinchot after 30 years. The on-screen reunion was emotional and authentic, reflecting their real-life chemistry. Fans may see another entry in the series, with Pinchot's return a possibility due to nostalgia.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F has quickly become a smash hit for Netflix, and rightfully so. After a 30-year gap between sequels, fans were ready to catch up with Eddie Murphys character of Axel Foley and be taken back to what made the original so great. With his trademark humor and wit, Murphy delivered on all that was promised, as did the supporting cast, which featured the return of the supercops, John Taggart (now Chief Taggart), and Billy Rosewood (now a Pi). Perhaps one of the most anticipated returns, however, was Bronson Pinchots character of Serge, the art gallery salesman/weapons dealer who is now a real estate agent.

Beverly Hills Cop 3's lack of success and absence from Netflix is partly due to the absence of the John Taggart character, played by John Ashton. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer's absence also contributed to the film's decline, with Ashton considering the third film's chances without him. Scheduling conflicts with the baseball movie Little Big League prevented Ashton from participating in Beverly Hills Cop 3, further impacting the franchise.
It has been 30 long years since Beverly Hills Cop 3 was released, yet despite three decades having passed, many fans are still wondering why Taggart wasn't involved in the sequel. With a fourth film, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, finding success, the franchise has had something of a revival. Spoiler Warning: This story mentions major spoilers for “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” now streaming on Netflix.
Axel Foley is back in Beverly Hills, and so is Eddie Murphy.
“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” director Mark Molloy set out to make a film with the same feeling and tone as the 1984 classic “Beverly Hills Cop” and its 1987 sequel, “Beverly Hills Cop 2.” He calls the latest film in the franchise “my love letter to the first two films.”
Molloy recruited Jahmin Assa, the film’s production designer, to pay tribute to those earlier chapters in numerous ways. Assa’s goal was to create something that made “Los Angeles feel timeless and as fresh as it did in the 1980s,” and that included shutting down city streets in Detroit and Los Angeles to finding the perfect location to execute a 1980s-style mansion shootout for the film’s third act, and crash...

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F features unexpected cameos, including Christopher McDonald as an angry golfer. McDonald's role may be a nod to his iconic Happy Gilmore character, Shooter McGavin. Despite the connection, it's likely not a canonical crossover, as McDonald is credited as "Golfer" in the credits.
One of the most surprising cameos in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F seems to suggest that the movie takes place in the same cinematic universe as a classic Adam Sandler comedy. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F sees Eddie Murphys renegade Detroit cop Axel Foley heading back to Beverly Hills for another close-to-home investigation when his estranged daughter Jane, a successful defense attorney, is threatened by mysterious criminals. While hes in Beverly Hills, Axel teams up with his old pals Billy Rosewood and John Taggart as well as Janes ex-boyfriend, Detective Bobby Abbott.

“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” the long-awaited fourth film in Eddie Murphy’s action comedy franchise, is now streaming on Netflix. It’s a 1980s throwback that features the return of old cast members like Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, and Bronson Pinchot.
To help communicate the film’s nostalgic vibe, Netflix hired Benedict Coulter, the editor who made the original “Beverly Hills Cop” trailer, to cut a new trailer in the style of his ‘80s work.
The result is a fun, high-energy trailer with a remarkably different feeling than modern trailers. This one skips the “trailer starts now” teaser before the actual teaser and that ubiquitous bass drop sound effect in favor of narration (lifted from the late trailer narrator Don Lafontaine’s voiceover for “Beverly Hills Cop II”) and a familiar song playing just beneath the dialogue for the whole thing: the Pointer Sisters’ “Neutron Dance,” which also soundtracked the original trailer.

A crucial element for successful franchises is bringing back beloved characters. It's especially important when it's released 30 years after the previous film. Such is the case with Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which obviously wouldn't exist without Eddie Murphy's eponymous detective, but it also needs its core cops. Despite the many failed attempts over the years to get this series back on its feet, John Ashton and Judge Reinhold, who play John Taggart and Billy Rosewood, respectively, were "all in," for this reunion. But that wasn't always the case.

It’s been over 30 years since Eddie Murphy’s intrepid Detroit detective, Axel Foley, last graced movie screens in Beverly Hills Cop III. A much-loved franchise from the 1980s, the films followed the fish-out-of-water Axel as he traded the gritty streets of Detroit for sun-drenched Southern California, blazing his own trail to solve crimes and throwing more than a few spanners in the works of the fancy Beverly Hills Police Department along the way.
Now in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Murphy returns once again as the wisecracking yet dedicated cop, this time bringing his rebellious energy to help his estranged lawyer daughter Jane. When masked intruders dangle her from a parking structure, Axel jumps on a plane and dusts off the signature Lions windbreaker that made him an icon to find out who’s behind the threats. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F will go down as one of the best legacy sequels because it walks the fine line between being nostalgic about the past and welcoming new fans to the franchise. It has some Easter eggs and references to the last three films, but the movie doesn’t linger on those moments too much because that might alienate viewers who are entering the franchise with this Netflix release. Now, those who watch and rewatch the first three Beverly Hills Cop movies on an annual basis will probably be aware of the callbacks and nods to the films. However, those who are just getting familiar with the series will probably be a little clueless. So, here’s a list to help them out.

Kevin Bacon won’t forget getting the opportunity to work with Eddie Murphy on Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.
While recently speaking with People magazine, the actor had nothing but praise for his co-star, saying it was a “bucket list thing to work with him. He is one of our greatest movie stars ever.”
In the Mark Molloy-directed movie, Murphy reprises his character, Detroit detective Axel Foley, four decades after the original 1984 movie, while Bacon plays Captain Grant.
Though the two legendary actors rose to fame around the same time in the 80s, with the original Beverly Hills Cop and Bacon’s Footloose coming out in the same year, they didn’t have many interactions at the time.
“Our paths never crossed in the ’80s. We never worked together. I don’t remember even having met him — I’m sure we probably did, but I don’t remember,” Bacon recalled.

Coming almost thirty years after the last installment in the franchise was released – and nearly forty years after the series debuted – Eddie Murphy returns as Detroit Detective Axel Foley in the latest release from Netflix Films – Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. What is remarkably refreshing about the not-so-young cop’s new adventure is that it may be the best of the series since it started back in 1984.
Foley’s latest case has him returning to Beverly Hills after his longtime friend Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) is reported missing by Foley’s estranged daughter (Taylour Paige) and Axel heads to California to find out what happened to his old friend. Once in Beverly Hills, the case of Billy’s disappearance quickly becomes the tip of an iceberg leading Axel to uncover a conspiracy that may threaten the entire Beverly Hills police force.

Eddie Murphy was a household name in the United States of America way before he forayed into films due to his standup comedy. But, if my memory isn’t failing me, he garnered international fame after his work in The Nutty Professor, Mulan, and Dr. Dolittle. And after he became the voice of Donkey in Shrek, every kid in the whole wide world became familiar with Murphy’s body of work. However, as the cinematic landscape, especially the comedy genre, started to change, and the pile of bad reviews turned into a mountain, Murphy decided to take a break. His return to the big screen wasn’t all that good. So, he took yet another break and returned with one of the best movies of all time, Dolemite Is My Name. Now, he seems to be in the mood to reprise some of his older roles. Comedy 2 America wasn’t good.

Murphy’s maverick cop – and his theme music – are back to fight corruption, but four decades on there’s little energy to enliven their formulaic reunion
Eddie Murphy isn’t finished yet – as he proved with his barnstormer of a performance as Blaxploitation pioneer Rudy Ray Moore in Dolemite Is My Name. But there’s something a bit tired and formulaic about this further go-around for his iconic Detroit cop Axel Foley from the Beverly Hills Cop action-comedy franchise which 40 years ago made Murphy an explosive Hollywood star – and whose catchy Axel F theme became an 80s anthem, duly revived here. He’s back for the fourth film, yet again leaving his Detroit turf to be a scruffy fish-out-of-water in the hilariously chi-chi world of Beverly Hills, yet again wryly noticing from the wheel of his car, on the way in, a montage of all the crazy California stuff, including...

Driving into town in his beat-up Chevy Nova, Detroit detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) still cannot believe the sights of Beverly Hills. He looks with bewilderment at high-fashion stores, a man dressed like a rockstar, and a blonde in a Corvette who offers a playful wink despite her boyfriend in the adjoining seat. Foley ends the sequence with his infectious chuckle, out of place in Beverly Hills but not out of ideas.
When Foley returns 40 years later for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, he repeats the drive in yet another beat-up vehicle. He notices a new set of California absurdities, including a child shooting video for his Instagram modeling mother and a woman in full burka passing Tom Ford’s store. But nothing here shocks Foley these days. Nothing drives him to his classic chuckle. Instead he gives it all a knowing smile and drives on.

It is hard to believe it has been 40 years since Eddie Murphy first exploded onto the screen as one of his signature characters, Axel Foley, in 1984’s Beverly Hills Cop. But even if that 22 year old is now 63, he is still on the beat and doesn’t miss a beat all these years later in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, almost seeming to have stopped time with this character who is just as funny, sharp and entertaining as ever.
The original was the top-grossing movie of its year and led to two sequels, one in 1987 and another in 1994. That’s right, we haven’t had an Axel fix for 30 years, though not for lack of trying; there were several scripts along the way, but none felt right to its star until finally bringing in producer Jerry Bruckheimer who (with late partner Don Simpson) made the first couple of films.

A renegade cop who refuses to play by the rules or pay any mind to the ungodly amount of collateral damage he causes in the name of saving Los Angeles from its own systemic rot, Axel Foley makes so much sense as the hero of a Netflix movie that it’s hard to believe the company didn’t invent him itself. Maybe that helps to explain why “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” feels sturdier and more self-possessed than your average straight-to-streaming legacy sequel, including Eddie Murphy’s own “Coming 2 America.” Here is a story of — and about — the diminished but enduring power of a classic brand in modern Hollywood (or at least the greater Hollywood area), and the moral of that story boils down to a simple idea: Familiarity is such a powerful force that it can inspire people to forgive pretty much anything.

If you are shocked by the rating we gave Netflix’s upcoming action-comedy sequel to the 40-year-old franchise Beverly Hills Cop franchise, then I am with you because I also went into watching this film with a lot of skepticism, but it kept winning me over again and again. Don’t misunderstand me when I say that this film isn’t that good if I watch it as a critique, but if you are a fan of this film franchise like I am, you can’t ask for a better sequel than this one.
Eddie Murphy returns to reprise the role of Axel Foley, which is certainly one of his most iconic roles ever, and thankfully, the film’s creators didn’t mess with him as they did with Indiana Jones in Dial of Destiny. Axel Foley is still a wise-cracking daredevil even if he is getting old,...

It’s incredibly easy to be cynical about legacy sequels after years of watching studios and streamers desperately try to squeeze every last drop of content from whatever IP they could lay their hands on, regardless of whether there’s any more story to be told or anyone interested in it being told. But watching Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, it’s incredibly hard to maintain that cynicism when Harold Faltermeyer’s iconic “Axel F” theme kicks into gear and the man it’s named for, Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy), breaks out his megawatt grin.

After almost three decades, Eddie Murphy’s most famous and goofy character, Axel Foley, is back on our screen with Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024). While binge-watching those first three films in the franchise, I found myself wondering what makes Axel so special. I mean, he definitely has Eddie’s charm and wit, but what else? I guess it’s the way Axel solves crime. He is not your regular law-abiding cop who follows a chain of command. Instead, Axel lays down his own path. In his own words, Axel wasn’t always a cop but someone who had “fractured an occasional law” as a kid. I guess you know what it means. So, Axel thinks like a criminal to solve crimes, which is one of the many qualities that makes him stand out. And Axel doesn’t take anything to heart. Even in the worst situations, he is flaunting his healthy gums.

Axel Foley returning to Beverly Hills, an animated feature from former Studio Ghibli talent, a jaw-dropping doc about love-struck “rooftoppers” and final seasons from three big shows — a Spanish teen drama, a viking saga and Daniel Larusso’s last hurrah — are some of the highlights on Netflix in July.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Netflix’s high profile feature release for this month, arrives on July 3. The fourth installment in the Eddie Murphy-led action-comedy franchise, sees Detroit detective Axel Foley return to Beverly Hills, thirty years after his last visit. This time, Foley must team up with a new partner — played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt — when his daughter’s (Taylour Paige) life is threatened. Franchise fans will be happy to see regulars Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold), John Taggart (John Ashton), Jeffrey Friedman (Paul Reiser) and Serge (Bronson Pinchot) make appearances and series newcomer Kevin Bacon is also part of the action as Captain Grant.

The box office is finally seeing signs of life — once again, animation saves Hollywood — but that doesn't mean there aren't still reasons to stay at home and watch things on streaming. With the summer ramping up, and movies like "Despicable Me 4," "Twisters," and "Deadpool & Wolverine" giving us hope that the theatrical experience will remain a popular choice in the next month, we feel slightly less bad about recommending things to watch from the comfort of home.
Indeed, after a couple of slower months, Netflix is gearing up for one big summer, releasing some very highly anticipated titles, some surprising sequels, and also adding some modern classics with timely ties to movies still in theaters. With so many titles releasing on streaming every month and so little effort done by these platforms in advertising their own product, we're here to tell you what you should prioritize on Netflix in July.

Eddie Murphy's trademark laugh from the 1980s may have been a part of the original Beverly Hills Cop, but that's one element that won't be back in the new Netflix sequel. Murphy long ago made himself stop laughing that way, recalling why he felt compelled to do so.
Murphy recently spoke with Cbr's Kevin Polowy to promote Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the fourth installment of the Beverly Hills Cop movie series. When asked about the absence of Axel Foley's unique laugh from the 80s films, Murphy shared how that just happened to be his real laugh that wasn't directly tied to his Beverly Hills Cop character. The actor went on to recall how comedians relentlessly poked fun at him by exaggerating his laugh when doing impersonations, and that left Murphy concerned that he'd be known for the way he laughed above all else. When Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is released next month, it will have been 30 years since the last installment, 1994's Beverly Hills Cop III. Franchise lead Eddie Murphy recently opened up about why it took decades to find the right story for the fourth movie.
Speaking with Screen Rant, Murphy revealed that the "reason why the movie didn't come together for years and years and years is because, in all the scripts that I read, there was no evolution." He explained, "It was just, 'Axel's coming back now, and he's on a new mission.' It was like, 'Okay, now this has happened.' It was just the generic things. 'This happens, and that happens, then this happens, and that happens.' And nothing worked."

Eddie Murphy reflects on why Beverly Hills Cop 3 flopped, citing missing characters and low stakes. Omission of key characters and clichs contributed to the failure of Beverly Hills Cop 3. Murphy hopes to redeem the franchise with Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and potentially a fifth film.
Eddie Murphy is set to return as Axel Foley in Netflixs Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F which hits the streamer on July 3, 2024, but before that, the 63-year-old star recently took time to reflect on why Beverly Hills Cop 3 didnt connect with audiences. Released on May 25, 1994, the third outing in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise was a critical failure for a number of reasons, only managing to take in $119 million at the box office against a budget of $70 million. Its widely regarded as the worst entry in the series thus far, and currently holds only an 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes among critics.

As a standout on Saturday Night Live and with 48 Hrs. proving to be a hit (while also reinventing the buddy cop movie), Eddie Murphy was going to be the star of the 1980s. So when Beverly Hills Cop was about to roll around, things were looking on pace for Murphy. Only, it wasn’t even going to star him at all – it was meant for Sylvester Stallone! In fact, Judge Reinhold even had his part in line before Eddie Murphy came on board.
