Atom Egoyan’s “Seven Veils” (2025), starring Amanda Seyfried, is filled with rich subtext. You can pick apart almost any scene or line of dialogue and find its relevance to its overarching themes. The film offers a reenactment of Salome, a classic opera, through the eyes of a theater director, played by Seyfried. However, instead of relying on a singular interpretation of its narrative, it focuses on the nature of reinterpretation and uses it to analyze the interpersonal dynamics at play during the opera production. It builds gradually like an elaborate fable to address how personal traumas affect their understanding of the art. At its end, it takes Seyfriend’s character toward a moment of catharsis, which digs far deeper than what meets the eye.

Directed and written by Atom Egoyan, Seven Veils stemmed from his personal experience as a theatre practitioner when he had to remount his interpretation of Richard Strauss’ ‘Salome’ with the Canadian Opera Company. He felt a sense of limitation in the process, and that was when he created the character of Jeanine, someone who felt a deep personal connection to the story of Salome. Theatre director Jeanine had been invited to remount a production of Salome. She shared a special relationship with her late mentor, Charles, and he wanted her to direct the opera in his absence. The play, written by Oscar Wilde, is centered around Salome, the daughter of Herod II and Princess Herodias. What makes the Biblical tale unforgettable is that Salome demanded John the Baptist’s head to kiss his lips after he refused to acknowledge her and romantically engage with her because he believed she was a fallen woman,...

Our recurring feature series Track by Track sees artists guiding readers through each song on their new release. This week, The Ophelias offer insight into their new LP, Spring Grove.
Though they originally started as an “all-girl” band, The Ophelias have made a concerted effort to shed that label. With one queer and two trans members, the nuances of identity are central to their work and explored in depth on their new album, Spring Grove.
Produced entirely by Julien Baker, the project is the result of primary songwriter Spencer Peppet trying to make sense of the overlap between her dreams and reality. In navigating this intersection, she was able to resolve her feelings about personhood, love, past romances, and friendships by organizing them in the form of songs.

There’s a wave of new and intelligent life at the indie box office this weekend post-Academy Awards after the traditionally slow, slow period for new openings. There have been a smattering of interesting films (Universal Language for one) but things have absolutely picked up with a George R.R. Martin short story on screen, a nursing home creep-out starring John Lithgow and Geoffrey Rush, the latest Atom Egoyan film, a duo that landed really well at Cannes, a Bruno Dumont sci-fi, a Bruce Labruce sex romp, an Italian box office hit and more.

A Russian nesting doll of trauma, meta-text, and workplace politicking, “Seven Veils” stretches the boundaries of its medium to tell a story that hovers between several different thematic and narrative levels. An opera inside a movie that is a synthesis of in-universe history and abuse, the film uses “Salome” as a launching pad to explore what it means to grapple with trauma and its enduring legacy. As a bonus, it is also a sneaky good “office” drama, one that explores the fluid and complicated nature of professional relationships, obligations, and misconduct.

Seven Veils is a film about an opera. It’s more than that, however. It’s the story of two young women dealing with their trauma through opera. It’s also the story of male abuse in its different forms and how that physically and metaphorically manifests itself in the lives of the women who receive the abuse. Writer/director Atom Egoyan, through the lens of opera, directs a unique film where nothing is quite what it seems, leading Amanda Seyfried in her excellent performance through something that often feels like it’s not grounded while also not being committed to being fully mystical.

Beauty and trauma collide in Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan's Seven Veils, which made its world premiere at the 2023 edition of the Toronto International Film Festival. Starring Amanda Seyfried, the film marks a reunion between her and Egoyan, more than 15 years since their first collaboration, Chloe. In fact, Chloe and Seven Veils make for an interesting double feature: shot and set in Toronto, both films examine the dark recesses of human psychology and see Seyfried playing women navigating hidden truths about themselves.
In Seven Veils, Seyfried is Jeanine, a theater director who has been hired to remount a production of Salome for the renowned Canadian Opera Company to honor the death of its creator, Charlie (who was once Jeanine's mentor and more). Management wants the production to be exactly as Charlie originally directed it, but Jeanine is adamant in making changes that are, as she puts it, "small but meaningful.

Atom Egoyan’s Seven Veils concerns the return of the repressed against the backdrop of Canadian modern life. Though Egoyan’s eerie and uncanny films rarely embrace outright surrealist logic, conventionalities of plot, dialogue, and structure tend to take secondary importance to more cerebral musings on the primal lusts, fears, and compulsions of the human psyche and culture as byproduct of those violent internal forces. It’s an unabashedly intellectual bent that the filmmaker sometimes pursues at the cost of dramatic legibility.
Seven Veils is a metatextual hall of mirrors informed by Egoyan’s theater production of Richard Strauss’s opera Salome, which he revived in 2023 after previous runs in 1996 and 2002, and the film uses sets, footage, and personnel from that production. Emmy-winning actress Amanda Seyfried will headline “Seven Veils,” a new drama that brings together the worlds of opera and film, hitting U.S. theaters on March 7, 2025. The film, distributed by XYZ Films and Variance, has already earned strong reviews with a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Director Atom Egoyan, known for his Oscar-nominated work, crafts a story about Jeanine (Seyfried), a theater director returning to stage her former mentor’s opera production. As she works on the show, hidden traumas from her past begin to surface, threatening both her work and personal life.
The film takes an unusual approach to storytelling by weaving its narrative around Richard Strauss’s opera “Salome.” Egoyan, who has directed the opera multiple times on stage, filmed during actual performances by the Canadian Opera Company, incorporating professional opera singers into the cast.

"I've been asked to make this personal, so I am." XYZ Films has revealed an official trailer for Seven Veils, the latest feature from Egyptian-Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan (he made Guest of Honour before this). An earnest theater director has the task of remounting her former mentor's most famous work, the opera Salome. Some disturbing memories from her past will allow her repressed trauma to color the present. Atom Egoyan directed the opera, Salome, in 1996, the first opera in what would be many to come over his career. “Some are born to be great, others have greatness thrust upon them.” This line from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night feels almost tailor-made for Mary, a figure whose greatness was never a matter of choice but divine destiny. So when Netflix’s Mary was announced, the anticipation was high.

A flash assessment of Gutierrez Mangansakan II‘s “Salome” would merely consider the lapses in its form. Camera work moves mechanically; you can feel the shake of its stiff tripod. The immediate concerns of the characters as academics are isolated and uninteresting, even seeing it as an academic. It is like a “slow cinema” that cuts too often. But the film unfolds gracefully in such a manner that the performances compliment the weight of the subtextual concerns of Mangansakan’s narrative that leads his message to triumph over his medium.
In this film, we follow Andres (Perry Dizon), an art scholar trying to close his long overdue sabbatical so he can write his book. But instead of spending it in his studies, he spent his long-awaited leave trying to recover from a case of alcoholic amnesia. Andres is being haunted by a mysterious feminine figure the moment he falls ill.

Seven Veils.Following the critical and commercial success of Exotica (1994)—Atom Egoyan’s erotic thriller about a tax auditor who frequents a Toronto strip club for a particular dancer—the Canadian Opera Company approached the director to adapt Richard Strauss’s Salome, first performed in 1905,for their upcoming season. There were notable similarities between the structures of sexual pleasure in John the Baptist’s decapitation and the nocturnal sleaze of nightclub culture: intemperate gawking by paternal figures, the aesthetics of high-risk environments, and a figurative and literal unclothing. The production emerged at an especially vulnerable time for Toronto sex workers, who were experiencing high rates of violence and targeted homicide. Egoyan’s production was a suitably macabre, postmodern spin on both the Bible story and Oscar Wilde’s one-act tragedy, which inspired Strauss’s opera. The Judean palace was swapped for a viridescent sanatorium on a steeply angled stage, with...

However, her journey to success wasn't without its challenges, as Chastain faced difficulties with being cast due to her unconventional appearance as a redhead. Before making her mark in the acting world, she took on minor roles in television shows such as ER, Veronica Mars, and Law & Order: Trial by Jury. However, her role in Oscar Wilde's tragedy Salome, alongside Al Pacino, garnered attention and opened doors to casting directors. This opportunity also led to her first leading role in the movie Jolene (2008).

Atom Egoyan has revealed that he was so traumatized by the negative reception to his Ryan Reynolds-starring thriller The Captive at the Cannes Film Festival that he will never return again with a film.
The pedophilia thriller, starring Reynolds as a man dealing with the disappearance of his nine-year-old daughter, was widely panned by the Cannes critics corps when it world premiered in competition in 2014.

“It got this really crazy reception. It was in competition on the Friday night. I haven’t been to Cannes since because I just don’t ever want to come back to what we had that night. The last couple of films, we showed in Venice or Berlin.

The traditionally celebrity-heavy Toronto Film Festival has unveiled its list of Canada’s best indie films for 2023, which includes a host of first-time directors that have come to the fore as the Hollywood actors strike put local movies and talent front and center at TIFF last September.
Canadian filmmakers were able to grab the spotlight after SAG-AFTRA members barred from promoting studio or streamer projects allowed them to fill the vacuum on TIFF red carpets and at industry events.
New directors were also favorites of Toronto programmers as a shifting TIFF film market with few American celebrities in town also allowed the marquee festival to double down on finding new creative voices.
So here’s the top Canadian feature films of 2023, as decided by film pickers in Toronto.

Matt Johnson’s drama about the meteoric rise of the world’s first smartphone, before its competitive collapse, bowed in Berlin.

Amanda Seyfried in Seven Veils
A resident of Toronto himself, Atom Egoyan has a longstanding relationship with the Toronto International Film Festival. It’s really the only place fitting for the première of his latest work, Seven Veils, a project which has been with him, in one form or another, for almost 30 years. A complex, multi-layered work, it stars Amanda Seyfried as the director of a production of Richard Strauss’ operatic take on Salome – more specifically, a restaging of a work by an esteemed director and her former lover, Charles, whose shadow hangs heavily over it, as does the fact that Charles drew on her own troubled past for inspiration. Further complications emerge from interactions between cast and crew members, most notably Johann (Michael Kupfer-Radecky), the exploitative leading man, and Clea (Rebecca Liddiard), the young woman from the props department charged with making a version of his head.

Art and life are inextricably entangled in Atom Egoyan’s Seven Veils, a wildly ambitious, visually intoxicating reinterpretation of the Richard Strauss opera, Salome, that proves to possess almost as many layers as the Biblical princess’ famous dance routine.
After spending the past two and a half decades struggling to get his groove back following the 1997 success of The Sweet Hereafter, the filmmaker reconnects with his pet themes of alienation and family trauma, taking inspiration from his own revisionist staging of the opera, which he remounted for the Canadian Opera Company earlier this year. Using that production as a leap-off point, Egoyan interweaves a behind-the-scenes narrative involving a young director (Amanda Seyfried) who is challenged to put her own stamp on the oft-interpreted material while exorcising a number of personal demons in the process.

Atom Egoyan knew Amanda Seyfried was a “remarkable young actress” when he first met her.The 63-year-old filmmaker has reunited with ‘Mamma Mia!’ star Amanda, 37, for new film ‘Seven Veils’ after initially working with her on the erotic thriller ‘Chloe’ in 2009 and recalled spotting her talent then.He told ScreenRant: "‘Chloe’ is in itself a remake, and it was a project that I was really excited to direct, but it wasn't my script. I didn't have the same freedoms that I have when I'm doing my own script and my own production. But I certainly had access the moment Amanda walked into that audition for ‘Chloe’. The movie explores his personal experience of remounting the opera Salome and incorporates elements of the protagonist's childhood trauma. Egoyan worked with Amanda Seyfried again after Chloe, and the film delves into themes of trauma, loss of sanity, and the complexities of love.

Atom Egoyan’s “Seven Veils” will have its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, TIFF organizers announced on Wednesday. The Canadian filmmaker of “Exotica,” “The Sweet Hereafter” and “Chloe” will present his film at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in a special Sept. 8 “Avant-premiere” screening held in partnership with the Canadian Opera Company.
“Seven Veils” stars Amanda Seyfried and was inspired by Egoyan’s recent experience with a revival of his 1996 version of the opera “Salome,” which he directed for the first time in 1996 for the Canadian Opera Company. The council, which previously bound Sabrina's warlock cousin Ambrose to the Spellman house for hundreds of years, is headed by Father Methuselah.
Methuselah is played by William B. Davis, who besides being a sitting member of the Witches Council, played Carl Gerhard Bush Spender, better known as Cigarette Smoking Man, who was part of the State Department's secretive "Syndicate" which oversaw alien colonization on The X-Files.
Witches Council elder Methuselah doesn't mind if you smoke and doesn't care if you burn.

Al Pacino seems to have a new lady in his life — one who is half his age.
The actor, 78, was photographed stepping out with Israeli actress Meital Dohan, 39, in West Hollywood, California, on Sunday while shopping for furniture at a Restoration Hardware store.
