“Law and Order: Svu” has tapped the first female showrunner in the NBC procedural’s long history.

Variety has confirmed with sources that Michele Fazekas has been named showrunner of the cop drama, having previously worked as a writer and co-executive producer on the series from 2001-2006. She takes over the top spot on the series from David Graziano, who has been the showrunner for the past three seasons.

Reps for NBC declined to comment.

“Law and Order: Svu” is currently airing its 26th season. It has not been formally renewed for Season 27 at this time, but is widely expected to be in the coming weeks.

Along with her longtime writing partner Tara Butters, Fazekas was most recently the co-showrunner on “The Boys” spinoff “Gen V” at Amazon. The second season of that show is currently in the works.

With Butters, Fazekas also created shows like “Emergence” and “Kevin (Probably) Saves the World.

Taylor Sheridan and Sylvester Stallone's Tulsa King has unveiled new cast members. Bella Heathcote and James Russo will feature in the upcoming third season of the Paramount+ series.

Per Variety, Heathcote has joined Tulsa King as a series regular, while Russo has been cast in a recurring role. Heathcote will play Cleo Montague, described as "a Tulsa native born and raised, and the daughter of a distillery owner." Russo will play "Quiet" Ray Renzetti, known as "one of the mob bosses in New York." Russo's character is "calm and measured." Heathcote has appeared in other projects such as Amazon's The Man in the High Castle, CBS' Strange Angel, and films including Relic, Fifty Shades Darker, Pride And Prejudice And Zombies, Neon Demon, and The Moongai. The veteran Russo has starred in The Deuce, Chicago Fire, Hawaii Five-o, Horizon: An American Saga, Open Range, Donnie Brasco, Django Unchained, and Black Mass.

“Tulsa King” Season 3 is continuing to build out its cast. Variety has learned exclusively that Bella Heathcote has joined the Paramount+ show as a series regular, while James Russo has been cast in a recurring role.

The pair join previously announced new cast members Robert Patrick and Beau Knapp, as well as returning cast members Sylvester Stallone, Martin Starr, Jay Will, Annabella Sciorra, Neal McDonough, and Frank Grillo, with Garrett Hedlund and Dana Delany. It was previously announced that “Tulsa King” Season 3 is now in production.

Heathcote will play Cleo Montague, described as “a Tulsa native born and raised, and the daughter of a distillery owner.” Russo will play “Quiet” Ray Renzetti, said to be “one of the mob bosses in New York. He is calm and measured.”

As the post reads, “Movie icon Wings Hauser took flight in the arms of his film & music partner, Cali Lili Hauser at their studio this weekend.“

Known for having one of the coolest names in cinema history, Wings Hauser was actually born Gerald Dwight Hauser on December 12, 1947. “Wings” was part of a stage name (Wings Livinryte) he used for a 1975 folk music album called Your Love Keeps Me Off the Streets, and he was credited as Wings Livinryte when he appeared on an episode of the TV series Cannon that same year. After that, he moved on to calling himself Wings Hauser.

Hauser made his screen debut with an uncredited appearance in the 1967 film First to Fight.

Lynne Marie Stewart, the actress known for roles in Pee-wee’s Playhouse and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, has died. She was 78.

Elvira star Cassandra Peterson was one of several to pay tribute to the actress Friday on Instagram after coming up together at The Groundlings in Los Angeles and appearing in Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988) and The Elvira Show (1993) together.

Peter Jason, the prolific character actor best known for his work on Deadwood and his numerous John Carpenter collaborations, died at 80 on Thursday, February 20. Jason's career spanned decades and encompassed everything from Westerns to horror films and video games.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Peter Jason passed away in his West Hollywood home following a long battle with cancer. Jason was born on July 22, 1944, in Hollywood, CA, and began working on stage while he studied drama at Carnegie; his passion for theater continued throughout his life, with participation in over 150 plays. Harvey Laidman, a television director known for working on multiple episodes of “The Waltons,” “Matlock” and “7th Heaven,” died Jan. 3 in Simi Valley, Calif. He was 82.

Laidman’s death was confirmed to Hollywood Reporter by his son, Dan Laidman, with the cause of death being cancer.

Throughout his multiple decades in the industry, Laidman directed episodes on a wide range of shows, including “Hawaii Five-o,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Quantum Leap,” “The Dukes of Hazzard,” “Magnum, P.I.,” “Jake and the Fatman,” “The Fitzpatricks,” “Eight Is Enough,” “The Blue Knight” and “Kojak.”

Laidman went on to direct a total of 11 episodes of “The Waltons” as well as 10 episodes of “Scarecrow and Mrs. King,” 33 episodes of “Matlock” and 16 episodes of “7th Heaven,” marking his final screen credit in 2004.

Harvey Laidman, a veteran television director who helmed episodes of such shows like The Waltons, Matlock and Magnum P.I., died Jan. 3 at the age of 82.

Per previous reporting by The Hollywood Reporter, his son, Dan Laidman, said his father died of cancer in a hospice facility in Simi Valley, Calif.

Laidman, who worked as a TV director across three decades, was born in 1942 in Cleveland to a librarian mother and an electrical contractor father. In his youth, he spent three formative summers working with the legendary Kenley Players theater company in Warren, Ohio, which hosted numerous productions with big-name Broadway, film and TV stars.

Laidman studied electrical engineering at Kent State University before transferring to USC, where he earned a degree in cinema in 1964. Thereafter, he worked at Kttv and Lorimar Productions and graduated from the Directors Guild of America Producer Training program. In 1975, he got his first directing assignment on The Waltons.

Over the years, we’ve welcomed and then lost a bunch of sci-fi and fantasy shows. Some of them were canceled way too soon, leaving us with a lot of questions. A lot of these deserve to make a comeback in some sort of way.

Sometimes shows actually do come back. Series like Night Court and Dexter are getting revivals (and prequels) while shows like Matlock and Hawaii Five-o are getting or have had reboots happen. It’s rare that the sci-fi and fantasy genres get the same treatment, though, and this is the genre with some of the best storytelling.

Here are five such series that deserve to make a comeback, and one of them is from 2024.

Grace Park and Hawaii Five-0 are practically synonymous for fans of the hit crime drama. Portraying Kono Kalakaua, Grace wasn’t just another character on the team, she was the heart and soul that gave the show its edge.

From the very first season, Kono stood out displaying a rookie cop with killer instincts and fierce loyalty that made her a fan favorite. And let’s not forget her insane surf skills that added to her badass persona. Whether she was chasing down bad guys or navigating personal challenges, Kono brought depth and relatability to the otherwise action-packed procedural.

Set against the East Bay punk music scene in the mid 1990s, Wolves is a story of grit and dreams in a world of violence and desperation. Norman, Moore, Engerman and Zhang play a tight-knit group of high school friends dreaming of escaping the blighted city in which they live.

These days, fans are familiar with seeing reboots of successful old series. Even shows that fans hold sacred have been plucked from the dusty shadows to see new life.

The Matlock approach turned out to be a very different way of handling a series that has been done before — a show that we might file under legendary status.

Network television is entering a very interesting era. Audiences are starting to get fatigued with the huge array of streaming services on offer. What's more, they are looking for long-form storytelling that matches the traditional formula they are used to from TV programming. While the likes of Disney+ and Netflix are still popular, those limited, single-season runs, with 6 to 8 shorter episodes, are growing tiresome. Fans are hoping to see something more procedural, or at least for more variety to be on offer. They are thus turning back to cable and network TV in the hope of getting back to the old ways of production. That provides these studios with an incredible opportunity, and audiences should not be surprised to see more reboots, spinoffs, and original ideas in the works as these companies fight for this ever-growing section of the audience.

For CBS, NCIS has always been a particularly prominent franchise to rely upon.

Following the end of its run on television, Fear the Walking Dead will soon be released on a new Blu-ray set containing every episode of the series. The bundle will be dropping in October, just in time for this year's Halloween.

Per Lionsgate, Fear the Walking Dead: The Complete Collection will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on Oct. 15, 2024. The set has a suggested retail price of $119.99 for the Blu-ray and Digital set, while the DVD is a bit cheaper at $94.98. The show ended its eight-season run on AMC in November 2023, currently serving as the longest-running Walking Dead spinoff so far. Fear the Walking Dead first premiered on AMC in 2015, still fairly early into the run of its parent series.

Actor and singer James Darren, known in part for his role in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, has passed away. He was 88 years old.

Per Variety, Darren died on Monday at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, California. According to his son, Jim Moret, Darren was being treated in the cardiac unit. While specific details about his hospitalization weren't shared, Darren was said to have expressed his love for his family before he passed.

Of his former teen idol father, Moret said, "He was a good man. He was very talented. He was forever young.

Darren was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on June 8, 1936. After taking an interest in acting, Darren caught a break when he was noticed by Screen Gems casting director Joyce Selznick. “Star Trek” and “Transformers” screenwriter and producer Roberto Orci was accused of “repeatedly” physically and sexually assaulting his wife, actress Adele Heather Taylor, in a lawsuit filed Monday.

The filing, a countersuit to Orci’s June suit against Taylor claiming she assaulted him with a Taser and pepper spray, graphically details years of abuse dating back to a March 2018 incident that saw Taylor fleeing a taxi after Orci struck her three times in the face. Cheng Pei-pei, the Chinese-born action film icon who starred in Ang Lee’s Oscar-nominated “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and King Hu’s seminal wuxia feature “Come Drink With Me,” has died. She was 78.

Cheng, considered a pioneer of martial arts roles for female actors, died in the San Francisco Bay Area on Wednesday. She had long suffered from a degenerative brain disease and has donated her brain to medical research.

Born in Shanghai on Jan. 6, 1946, Cheng moved to Hong Kong in 1962. With her ballet and dance training, she was soon working with the iconic Shaw Brothers studio. Tamayo Perry, a surfer, lifeguard and actor who held roles in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Blue Crush,” died on Sunday after being attacked by a shark in Hawaii, the BBC reported. He was 49.

According to the Associated Press, Honolulu Ocean Safety and the city’s emergency services responded around 1 p.m. to a call regarding a man who appeared to have suffered from several shark bites near Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore. Perry was then brought to shore by paramedics via jet ski and pronounced dead at the scene.

Perry was “a lifeguard loved by all,” Honolulu Ocean Safety acting chief Kurt Lager said during a press conference, according to the AP.

“He’s well known on the North Shore. He’s a professional surfer known worldwide,” Lager said. “Tamayo’s personality was infectious and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more.

Janis Paige, who racked up more than 100 film, TV and stage credits over six decades including The Pajama Game, Silk Stockings and Santa Barbara, died June 2 at her home in Los Angeles. She was 101.

Her friend Stuart Lambert told The Associated Press about Paige’s death.

During her long career, Paige toured with Bob Hope and danced onscreen with Fred Astaire, along with originating the Babe Williams role in The Pajama Game on Broadway in 1954. That same year she headlined It’s Always Jan, a CBS sitcom about the problems of single-parenthood during which she usually sang a song. It lasted a single season.

Born Donna Mae Tjaden on September 16, 1922, in Tacoma, Wa, she began singing in talent shows at a tender age and moved to Los Angeles after graduating high school.

Onorato died April 21 in Los Angeles, his nephew Chris Onorato announced.

Onorato founded the Casting Society of America (then known as the American Society of Casting Directors) with Mike Fenton and Joe Reich in 1982. He and Jerold Franks — his Onorato/Franks Independent Casting partner — won the CSA’s Artios Award for best casting for a comedy film for 1989’s “Bagdad Café.” At the 34th annual Artios Awards in 2019, Onorato received a lifetime achievement award from the organization.
