According to director Jeff Lieberman in the DVD commentary, Jeff Goldblum almost got the part of Dr. David Blume, but was replaced by Robert Walden because Lieberman felt that Goldblum and star Zalman King looked too much alike.

According to director Jeff Lieberman, New York music clubs such as CBGB's would often screen the film as backing visuals during performances of punk bands such as Ramones, particularly the disco-attack scene. He felt that this was a way for these performers to express their overall disdain for the disco scene.
Stephanie's two children in had to be dubbed by Jeff Lieberman's three-year-old daughter. This was because the parents of both the child actors pulled them from the shoot after seeing the potentially disturbing attack scene being shot. Unfortunately, the two children were taken before they could be looped in for the audio.
In DVD commentary Jeff Lieberman said that the full moon shot that the credits of the film play over was an intentional foreshadowing of the bald-headed lunatics.
