In casting the role of Marilyn Monroe, director Larry Buchanan conducted a "National Marilyn Monroe Lookalike Contest" which was won by unknown 21-year-old Alexis Pederson. After reading the script, Pederson turned down the role and instead it was offered to Misty Rowe, who took it.

Fields and Me (1976). Bogie (1980) and Mommie Dearest (1981) would soon follow as well.

About at least two dozen cast and crew worked on or were credited for both Marilyn Monroe biopics Goodbye, Norma Jean (1976) and Goodnight, Sweet Marilyn (1989).
Extensive film footage from the movie was later use for another Marilyn Monroe biopic - Goodnight, Sweet Marilyn (1989). The material utilized was for the flashback scenes for the character under her earlier Norma Jean Baker name persona.
