Heather (Stubington) grew up in a loving family in Illinois. By the time she was a teen, she had long known that she had been adopted as an infant by her parents. But in 2000, the then-15-year-old’s world was shattered when she learned that the man she knew as her uncle, John Robinson (Guttenberg), was a serial killer accused of murdering multiple women in the Kansas City area,...

A while back, Stranger Things and Ghostbusters: Afterlife actor Finn Wolfhard made his feature directorial debut with a horror comedy called Hell of a Summer, which he directed alongside Billy Bryk, who also appeared in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to watch the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and gave it a 5/10 review than can be read at This Link. The film secured a U.S. distribution deal with Neon last summer, with their plan being to give it a theatrical release on April 4th. Earlier this week, we saw a retro-style poster for the film that paid tribute to the 1981 slasher classic Happy Birthday to Me, and now our friends at Bloody Disgusting have shared another retro-style Hell of a Summer poster, created by Creepy Duck Design – and this one pays tribute to the 1980 slasher classic Prom Night! Jenna Ortega isn’t looking to join the MCU any time soon — especially after an uncredited role in “Iron Man 3.”
The “Wednesday” actress told Et in the video here that she has been there, done that when it comes to the MCU, even if her role in the 2013 franchise installment was uncredited.
“I did it once,” Ortega said when asked if she would want to be in a Marvel film. “It was one of my first jobs I ever did. They took all my lines out. I’m in ‘Iron Man 3.’ I take up the frame. I have one leg. And I’m the vice president’s daughter.”
She added of the experience, “They even took my name away. I count that, and then I move on.”
Ortega’s “Death of a Unicorn” co-star and MCU “Ant-Man” actor Paul Rudd seemed flummoxed at how Ortega was uncredited in her bit part.

“Wednesday” Season 2 is set to premiere on Netflix sometime in 2025, but it sounds like ideas are already being conjured up for episodes beyond that.
Jenna Ortega, the star of the hit dark comedy series, told Collider that the writers are “messing around and throwing out ideas” for Season 3 of the “Addams Family” offshoot.
“We haven’t gotten an official thumbs up or anything like that, but I know that the writers are… With a show like that, you kind of want to get ahead of the game,” Ortega said.
And while there is still no release date for the second season of “Wednesday,” Ortega provided an update on the long-awaited installment.
“We’re still in the edit. I was doing Adr for it two weeks ago,” she said. “That’s the funny thing about these jobs is you’re done, you wrap, but you’re not really done. So, I...

Last year, Synapse Films and Red Shirt Home Video teamed up to bring us a deluxe edition Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release of the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies. Now, they’re working on several follow-up projects, including a 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release of Fright Night Part 2 – and a deluxe edition 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release of Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II! Red Shirt’s Michael Felsher announced the Prom Night II project on social media, where he also revealed that Blu-ray releases of Prom Night III: The Last Kiss and Prom Night IV: Deliver Us from Evil are in the works. Whether or not the other sequels get 4K upgrades will depend on what materials are available for them. Synapse does have the rights required to bring the original Prom Night to 4K Uhd as well, but...

Bill Murray expected to laugh as an honored guest at SNL50, but crying wasn’t on his agenda. That’s on you, Bill — who attends a reunion with longtime friends without getting a case of the feels?
“It was surprisingly emotional," Murray told Sway Calloway on SiriusXM's Sway in the Morning, per Entertainment Weekly. “I wept three times in the show. It really got to me.”
What started the waterworks? “Oh, there were sketches that were dying,” Murray replied (and he wasn’t wrong). “No, I’m kidding.”
The moments that actually got to Murray were those filmed tributes that featured former castmates who’d passed away. “I was watching, and there's a lot of video and history that they’re showing,” he explained. “And I didn’t see it coming, but there was Gilda up there dancing with Steve Martin.”

Brittany Snow isn’t just known for her acting—her fearless approach to fashion, from statement heels to bold red carpet choices, makes her a standout. Who could forget the Tamara Mellon “Eyelash” pumps she styled with shorts and a midriff-baring V-neck crop top?
Reflecting on some of her past fashion choices, she once admitted, “I’ve worn my share of leopard pink boots to premieres or belts the size of cars. I thought my pink leopard boots were so cool.” Standing 5 feet 2 ½ inches (158.8 cm) tall, the American actress may be petite, but she has made a striking impact in the entertainment industry with her fearless red carpet moments.

Ready to take another walk on the Shadyside? Four years after Leigh Janiak's Fear Street trilogy, based on R. L. Stine's young adult horror books, weekly dropped on Netflix, the streamer is gearing up for another round of genre homaging goodness with 80s set slasher Fear Street: Prom Queen. Helmed by Matt Palmer, the latest instalment in the franchise is — you guessed it! — a prom night chiller, and one that's set to see a new era of horror begin as a cloaked figure stalks the corridors of Shadyside High School in 1988. Check out the teaser for the movie below;
Pendulous axes. Screaming girls. A blood-spattered mirrorball. Sure, this teaser for Fear Street: Prom Queen is very much just a teaser and nothing more, but once again it looks like Netflix has nailed the vibe of its nostalgic setting and isn't holding back on the bloodiness fourth time around.

Sleepaway Camp icon Felissa Rose will star in the indie slasher The Last Sleepover.
A group of former friends reunite on the night of their 20-year high school reunion. Once part of an elite clique called The Pastels, they harbor a dark secret — years ago, they tormented a less fortunate girl in a cruel prank that ended in tragedy.
After the reunion, they continue the night at an Airbnb for one last sleepover, but the celebration quickly turns into a nightmare. A masked killer begins hunting them down one by one, seeking revenge for the sins of their past.
Rose will play the adult Pastel, Talia Lopes, with Spooky Madison (Phantom Fun-World) as a younger version of the character. Audri Curtsinger, Jason Crowe, Ashe Parker, and Tj Moreschi round out the ensemble.
Production is set to begin next month in Kentucky with Gregory W. Brock directing from a script he co-wrote with Austin J. Rutherford.

Quick Links'Valentine' Captures the Visual Flair of the Holiday Laced With Horror'Valentine' Has a Pretty Inventive Killer
With Heart Eyes recently opening, it's great to see the return of the combination of the slasher sub-genre with the holiday that is intended for lovers. Valentine's Day is usually associated with romantic comedies and light dramas, but it's fitting that horror gets into the mix because it's perfect for a little date night excursion. It has been a while since Cupid's arrow hit the genre, but back in 2001, director Jamie Blanks gave horror fans a treat with a little movie called Valentine, a film that mixed '80s slasher sensibilities with a bit of the late '90s horror tropes that 1996's Scream made so popular. If Heart Eyes was something you found satisfied your lover's holiday bloodlust, then Valentine represents the perfect nightcap.

The following reveals spoilers for Star Trek: Section 31 now streaming on Paramount+
Star Trek: Section 31 pulls a surprising cameo in its final scene, as Jamie Lee Curtis appears as the team's commander. The actor won huge accolades for her performance alongside Section 31 star, Michelle Yeoh, in Everything Everywhere All at Once. That included a pair of Oscars for the two: Yeoh for Best Actress and Curtis for Best Supporting Actress. The movie itself also won Best Picture.
The cameo feels almost preordained, and while it's always fun to see the veteran actor onscreen, few people could claim that her arrival was unexpected. That isn't quite the end of her appearance in Section 31, however. In fact, her first moment feels far more interesting than her last. The film opens with Curtis' voiceover narration, explaining the setup and the stakes involved. It's a clever homage to a very subtle cameo...

When fans think of Jamie Lee Curtis’ genre contributions, the conversation usually starts and ends with John Carpenter's Halloween. Understandably so, as Laurie Stroud is one of the greatest “final girls." However, the actress’ horror career extends well beyond her many battles with the dreaded boogeyman. The '80s saw Curtis star in The Fog and Terror Train. Yet arguably her most beloved slasher from that golden era is Prom Night. Now the classic film is streaming for free.

Jamie Lee Curtis is one of the most recognizable scream queens, establishing her presence as Laurie Strode in the Halloween franchise as well as appearing in 80s cult classics such as The Fog and Prom Night. Her characters are often headstrong and determined in the face of adversity, and that’s what makes them so compelling to root for. Although on the screen, Curtis’ performances are brave, in reality, she does not like being scared at all. In fact, one of the most iconic villains of the Disney renaissance period left her terrified.

Director/producer Sean S. Cunningham has admitted that his 1980 slasher film "Friday the 13th" was a deliberate effort to imitate the style and success of John Carpenter's "Halloween," which had come out only two years prior. Cunningham tried to copt Carpenter's "killer's eye perspective" camera angles, and it's no coincidence that both films take place on dates famous for horror, bad luck, and death. Cunningham's gambit was successful, though, and his $550,000 movie ended up making nearly $60 million at the box office. It also spawned 11 sequels, many of which came to define the horror trends of the '80s. Although none of the "Friday the 13th" movies are particularly beloved by critics, they are a gestalt-defining phenomenon.
Holiday-themed horror films began popping up regularly in theaters. The years after "Friday the 13th" saw the release of "April Fool's Day," "New Year's Evil," "Prom Night," and "Silent Night, Deadly Night."

Fans of Patricia Cornwells Kay Scarpetta novels were delighted earlier this year when it was announced that theyd be turned into a series for Prime Video with Nicole Kidman in the lead, and Jamie Lee Curtis portraying her sister, Dorothy. Two seasons are now officially in development, and while filming has yet to begin, Kidman recently teased the thriller as being scarier than The Others, her 2001 horror hit that has long been lauded as one of the spookiest ghost stories ever told.
While the two are obviously very different projects, Kidman called the script for Scarpetta "terrifying" in a new interview with Vanity Fair. The series follows Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta as she returns to Virginia and resumes her former position with complex relationships, both personal and professional including her sister Dorothy with plenty of grudges and secrets to uncover. Some of our favorites will be returning for the upcoming sequel of ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ – think Freddie Prinze Jr and Jennifer Love Hewitt – and some won’t be – think Sarah Michelle Gellar. But that’s not a deal breaker because we’ve got a lot of exciting new stars ready to hop on the train of the slasher film.

The spooky season may be over but we still love us some Jamie Lee Curtis, forever the most iconic scream queen to emerge from ‘70s horror. Sure, she’s gone on to Oscar glory but we’ll always love her as Laurie Strode, even if she has hung it up on the character…or has she?
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jamie Lee Curtis seemed to assure us that Laurie Strode is no more, saying, “I have hung up my bell-bottoms and my pale blue button-down shirt, and I have relinquished [Laurie] to the ages with a warm, ‘aloha,’ and a thanks for all the years and memories.” Then she added a quick, cryptid farewell: “And yet, if I’ve learned anything in my 65 years on the planet, it’s never say never. Goodbye.”

Jenna Ortega has officially evolved from a Disney princess to a scream queen. In just a few short years, the Gen Z star has left her mark in horror with successful movies (both in existing franchises and helping to kickstarting a new one), while also helping revitalize Tim Burton's career as his muse in two highly popular titles.
Though Ortega had already appeared in big movies like "Iron Man 3" (in a small role as the Vice President's daughter) and had a recurring role on "Jane the Virgin" a decade ago, it wasn't really until after the pandemic that Ortega broke big, especially in the horror landscape. It helped, of course, that Ortega appeared in four horror films in 2022 alone. She was a protagonist of the "Scream" reboot alongside Melissa Barrera, subverting the franchise's iconic kitchen murder scene by surviving her encounter with Ghostface. Then she appeared in the...

The killers in the slasher sub-genre have been predominantly male, but occasionally we’re treated to the sight of a female blade-wielding maniac – and lately, it seems like we’ve been seeing more and more female slashers, which is a fun change of pace. Pearl is one example of the recent slasher resurgence on the big screen, and the title character was one killer lady! So it seemed like this would be a good time to look back at the previous female slashers and pick some favorites. New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features five selections reflecting the month of September 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include an ’80s slasher, a Mexican sci-fi story, and a twisty thriller about family.
Humongous (1982)
Pictured: Janet Julian in Humongous (1982).
Directed by Paul Lynch.
Humongous begins on Labor Day (September 2) in the 1940s before flash-forwarding to the present day. Once we move into the modern era of the story (and past a rather brutal opening sequence), this Canadian production slips into familiar territory. The setting of an island is, admittedly, different than the usual school or creepy old house, but Paul Lynch’s horror follow-up to Prom Night is still formulaic.
Even so, Humongous passes for a watchable, if not low-stakes and oldfangled slasher.

When you look at the true legacy of a scream queen there are a lot of options out there to choose from. When looking at the top of the heap though? I’d argue that there really is only one option. Jamie Lee Curtis has been making horror movies in 6 different decades now and while a lot of them are directly tied to her most famous franchise with 7 of her horror films being in the Halloween series, there’s so much more. In fact, her run from 1978 to 1981 includes the likes of Halloween 1 and 2, The Fog, Terror Train, and Prom Night. All of those movies have now been remade and are considered classics but there is one in there that doesn’t get talked about enough, was a bomb when it came out, but keeps getting better with age. While Halloween II came out and stole the spotlight in 1981, Road Games...

I Know What You Did Last Summer revitalized the teen slasher genre with its beach town setting. The film featured fantastic chase scenes that kept audiences on the edge of their seats. Despite mixed reviews, I Know What You Did Last Summer's legacy lives on with sequels and a planned 2025 reboot.
The late 90s ushered in a new wave of horror films dubbed the post-Scream-slasher. Thanks to the freshness and innovation Scream brought to the horror genre, the teen slasher saw a resurgence in the late 1990s. Quick Links Kellan Lutz Before Due Justice Kellan Lutz's Twilight Run What Is Due Justice About?
Released on Prime Video on November 24, 2023, Twilight star Kellan Lutz is enjoying a surge in viewership with his new action movie Due Justice. Although it holds a lowly 26% Rotten Tomatoes rating and a 3.6 IMDb score, the film shows a much different side of Lutz than fans of the Twilight series are used to seeing him when he played Emmett Cullen from 2008 to 2012.
Due Justice is a vicious revenge thriller that, despite its formulaic familiarity, has performed much better on the streaming platform than it did in a limited theatrical release. For Lutz, it will be interesting to see if the movie's newfound popularity will lead to new acting opportunities or if the low ratings will hinder his future projects.

Since the dawn of cinema, Scream Queens have been an indelible fixture in Hollywood. These iconic figures embody the damsel in distress archetype, with roots tracing as far back as the 1905 silent short Train Wreckers, where a woman is melodramatically tied to the tracks in front of an oncoming train, driven by her lover no lesscue the eye roll. Evolving over decades, each generation has seen its own Scream Queen dominating the silver screen: Fay Wray (King Kong) in the 1930s, Jamie Lee Curtis in the 1980s, and now Mia Goth.

Tim Burton's grim but imaginative rendition of the Addams family's eldest daughter, Wednesday Addams, captured audience imagination unlike any other. Wednesday became Netflixs most popular English-language TV series for a long time, staying perched firmly in the Global Top 10 for twenty weeks in ninety-three different countries after the release of the much-awaited Season 1. While this happened back in November 2022, fans have stayed invested in the morbid but relatable Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) and her adventures with the supernatural to date. The enthusiasm for Season 2 of Wednesday has only increased since then.
For those who want a recap, Season 1 began with a bang. Wednesday is seen releasing piranhas in her school swimming pool to avenge Pugsley's bullying, and predictably, she is expelled. She then enrolls in the Nevermore Academy for outcasts such as herself, which is when her misadventures begin. Stuck with a roommate who is her complete opposite,...

“Copycat” gets thrown around a lot when discussing the original I Know What You Did Last Summer, yet perhaps a more accurate descriptor is “opportunist.” The film was, in fact, rushed into production in light of Scream‘s success, but Kevin Williamson’s script dates farther back. And unlike Williamson’s first collaboration with Wes Craven, I Know What You Did Last Summer channeled traditional slashers rather than deconstructed them.
Despite a straightforward approach in a postmodern era of horror, I Know ended up being fully digested by pop culture. Comedies Scary Movie and Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th spoofed the original film without mercy, MADtv conceived a Christmas-themed parody, and the direct sequel didn’t even take itself too seriously. So it would seem as if a third Summer was unnecessary. That is, until the idea came up again in 2005 (and after a...

In releasing his ‘X’ trilogy, Ti West has delivered three very powerful, yet different films that have each left an indellible mark on horror and modern cinema more widely.
With MaXXXine, the grand finale of this project, West takes us on a visceral journey through 1980s Hollywood, weaving a tale that is as much a slasher as it is a critique of the very industry it depicts. This third installment sees Mia Goth reprise her role as Maxine Minx, the ambitious survivor from X, now thrust into the glitzy yet perilous world of Los Angeles.
Set in 1985, MaXXXine opens with a montage that situates us firmly in the cultural milieu of the period, a time of moral panic, sensationalist media, and the burgeoning home video market. Clips of Ronald Reagan pontificating about American values juxtapose with news reports on the ‘Night Stalker’ and the satanic panic, creating an atmosphere thick with paranoia and fear.

It’s prom night 2008 and Donna Keppel is planning to wear a champagne-colored dress. Corseted, with pink and gold beads. Unfortunately, it might also get splattered with blood and tears, because the teacher who’s obsessed with her has broken out of the mental hospital, tracked her down to the prom venue, and is ready to make sure she’ll be his forever. Even if that means having to slaughter her friends first. That’s the story of the 2008 version of Prom Night (watch it Here) – and if you haven’t seen this one, it might be the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
The Prom Night franchise began with the release of a 1980 slasher movie which starred scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis as a young woman who has to deal with a ski mask-wearing maniac crashing her prom. People are stabbed and hacked, knocked off a cliff, decapitated, throats are slit,...

From Prom Night to Jennifer’s Body, teen slasher movies have always been a staple in the horror genre. Even if the films don’t always earn positive reviews from critics, viewers never seem to get tired of watching teenagers make painfully bad decisions (“Don’t open that door!”) and get chased through the woods by a masked killer who turns out to be someone in the friend group.
Curiously, however, the subgenre’s popularity hasn’t really translated to TV. There have been a few teen slasher show attempts like MTV’s Scream, Freeform’s Dead of the Summer, and Prime Video’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, but none of them ultimately survived long on air or in the cultural conversation.

"Welcome to Shadyside High. We're gonna have a killer time."
2021's Fear Street trilogy proved to be a major success for Netflix, and amid persistent rumors that the streamer might be planning to develop more adaptations of R.L. Stine's work, we got confirmation that a Fear Street movie was in the works last November.
Netflix recently announced the full cast and a synopsis for Fear Street: Prom Queen (or Fear Street '88: Prom Queen as it's titled in this video), and the streamer has now revealed that filming is officially underway.
We also have a brief behind-the-scenes teaser featuring several members of the cast chatting about the show as they prepare to shoot their scenes. Something tells us their characters won't be having quite as much fun as Prom Night progresses.
Directed by Matt Palmer (Calibre), the ensemble cast includes India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, David Iacono,...
