Writer and director Stephen Weeks wanted to cast Mark Hamill as Gawain, but producers Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus cast Miles O'Keeffe instead. O'Keefe's voice was dubbed by Peter Firth.
The words of the riddle said: "Where life is emptiness, gladness.

Sir Sean Connery made this movie while filming "Never Say Never Again (1983)," which is why you only see him sporadically throughout the movie.
Trevor Howard's part is supposed to be King Arthur, but is identified in the movie and the credits as just "The King".
The movie is based on the fourteenth century poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight", although the story is markedly different.
