The Far Pavilions (1984) was HBO's first mini-series, the complete version runs for 300 minutes, and the parts were titled "Return to India," "The Journey to Bhithor," and "Wally and Anjuli" (The current DVD release splits each of these parts into two, creating six parts each of about 50 minutes, adding a credit section at the newly created break in each part, and removes the title card names of the original parts). It was also was the most expensive at the time, budgeted at 12 million dollars.

According to Sir Christopher Lee in his autobiography, all of the cast and crew on the location shoot "were stricken with gut rot." According to Lee, the only exceptions were his wife Gitte, "who flourished on curry three times a day," and Sir John Gielgud.
