Richie Rich, the 1994 comedy starring Macaulay Culkin, is a streaming success. The film, currently available on the Netflix library, has spent a few days on the streamer's top 10 list of most popular movies. Richie Rich is sitting in the eighth spot at the time of writing, while other titles on the list include The Menu, Back in Action, and How to Train Your Dragon 2.

Directed by Donald Petrie, Richie Rich is based on the comic book character of the 1950s. The character also had an animated cartoon show in the 1980s, which was then revived in 1996 after the release of the movie. Richie Rich only made $76 million from a $40 million production budget and had a mixed reception by critics; it currently has a 27% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Although it was considered a box office flop, Richie Rich blew up the home video market and made an estimated $125 million in home video sales.

Jack Lemmon was the two-time Oscar-winner who starred in dozens of films, working until his death in 2001 at the age of 76. But how many of those titles are classics? Let’s take a look back at 25 of his greatest movies, ranked worst to best.

Donald Petrie has signed on to direct “The Last Resort,” a Philippines-set romantic comedy written by Karen McCullah, the scribe behind such romcom gems as “10 Things I Hate About You” and “Legally Blonde.”

Petrie, who directed the Lemmon-Mathau comedy “Grumpy Old Men” and is an Emmy nominee for his work on “L.A. Law,” is responsible for a number of classic romantic comedies himself, having directed

“Miss Congeniality,” “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” and “Mystic Pizza.”

Legendary film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert didn't review the classic Western movie Tombstone when it was first released, and it was only because of Val Kilmer that they ever saw it at all. Tombstone was a smash-hit when it was released in 1993. It made $56 million domestically at the box office (via Box Office Mojo), and it earned a Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 74%. Interestingly, however, Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert didn't contribute to Tombstone's critical reception until over a month after the film was released.

Exclusive: Mary J. Blige is back at Lifetime to executive produce two new original movies inspired by her biggest hits — Mary J. Blige’s Real Love and Mary J. Blige’s Strength of a Woman. The flicks will premiere on back-to-back Saturdays, beginning June 10 at 8 p.m.

Donald Petrie's "Grumpy Old Men" was released in theaters on Christmas Day in 1993, serving as that year's "take your parents to see it" film. Prior to "Grumpy Old Men," the film's two stars, Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon, had appeared in five films together, including "The Fortune Cookie," Neil Simon's "The Odd Couple," "Kotch," "The Front Page," and "Buddy Buddy." The two were so well known for their chemistry, they were often considered one of comedy's great, prevailing duos. To this day, they are often mentioned together, and the two are buried not too far apart in the same cemetery in Westwood, CA.

While Lemmon and Matthau worked together regularly throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, there was a notable gap in their shared résumé. From 1981 until 1993, the pair did not work in tandem — even though they both appeared in Oliver Stone's 1991 film, "JFK," they had no scenes together.

A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Ben Affleck only regrets one movie: Daredevil. That’s what the actor once told Playboy about the 2003 superhero misstep. “It just kills me,” said Affleck. “I love that story, that character, and the fact that it got f***ed up the way it did stays with me.” Released on 14 February 2003, Daredevil was an attempt at a darker, grittier superhero film – gritty in a pre-Nolan sort of way, at least. It tells the story of blind lawyer Matt Murdock, who avenges his murdered father (that old chestnut) by cleaning up the grubby streets of Hell’s Kitchen. Blinded as a child by toxic goop, Murdock has enhanced senses as an adultre, which manifest as a kind of super-powered radar. Twenty years on from its release, Daredevil looks like a proto-franchise player – an attempt to get a Marvel movie series off the ground before filmmakers had quite figured out the formula.

Review: One has to give all the gals involved in 80 for Brady credit. In recent years, all four have had tremendous success, with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin doing excellent work on the consistently watchable Grace and Frankie on Netflix. Meanwhile, Rita Moreno, at ninety-one (but looking at least fifteen years younger), is an Egot winner who was just in Spielberg’s remake of her own West Side Story, while Sally Field (the youngest of the group at 76) was recently in a terrific indie called Hello My Name is Doris. All four are still in the game and doing great work, but 80 for Brady isn’t going to be a career highlight for any of them.

Growing up in Philadelphia, I've experienced my fair share of harsh winters. The blizzard of 1996 stands out, but there were a number of other rough years for a while too. Although, when I moved to Chicago a few years ago, I experienced a whole new level of frigid chills. In the New York Times yesterday, while discussing his upcoming semiautobiographical film "The Fabelmans," director Steven Spielberg repeated a common refrain: Please, please, please don't forget about theaters.

Spielberg had rightly been concerned about the life of movie theaters for many years. Back in 2013, Spielberg already saw the writing on the wall, pointing out that blockbusters were becoming bigger and bigger, while more adult dramas were falling by the wayside. He predicted that movie theaters would fall into a Broadway-style pricing system, with the "bigger" shows fetching higher and higher ticket prices, and the smaller dramas being more affordable. At that same time, Spielberg revealed that his 2012 film "Lincoln" -- handily one of the filmmaker's best movies -- was nearly an HBO release. Even in 2013, it seemed that theaters were destined to be the home of blockbusters exclusively.

Dark comedy-drama “My Neighbor Adolf,” which will world premiere in Piazza Grande at the Locarno Film Festival, has debuted its trailer. The film stars David Hayman, Udo Kier and Olivia Silhavy, and is directed by Israeli helmer Leon Prudovsky. Beta Cinema is handling world sales.

The film, which Hayman has described as a cross between “Rear Window” and “Grumpy Old Men,” is set in Colombia in May 1960, just after Israel’s abduction of Adolf Eichmann in Argentina. Polsky, a lonely Holocaust survivor, lives in the remote Colombian countryside. He spends his days playing chess and tending his beloved rose bushes. One day, when a mysterious old German man moves in next-door, he suspects that his new neighbor is… Adolf Hitler. Since nobody believes him, he embarks on a detective mission to find the evidence. But, in order to gather evidence, he will need to be closer to his neighbor than he would like.

YouTube is upping its play for cord-cutters: The video platform has released dozens of full seasons of about 100 TV shows — nearly 4,000 episodes in all — available to stream for free with ads.

The free TV shows are available only to YouTube users in the U.S. The lineup includes Gordon Ramsay’s “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Kitchen Nightmares,” “Andromeda,” “Heartland,” “Scream Queens,” “Unsolved Mysteries,” “Sanctuary,” “Hidden Palms,” “21 Jump Street,” “Iron Chef,” “Brewster Place” and “Are We There Yet?”

The Weasel’S Tale (“El Cuento De Las Comadrejas”) is a subtitled Argentine dramedy about a cluster of past-their-prime film celebrities that perfectly nails the sweet spot for presenting elderly protagonists as real, if eccentric, people. Most films or TV series starring seniors make them overly feisty or clever, presumably to attract younger viewers. For every Cocoon, there are scads of Grumpy Old Men or Golden Girls for laughs, or action films like Red that features retired spies who can still kick an outrageous amount of younger bad guy butts.

Dorothea G. Petrie, a two-time Emmy winner and founding member of the Producers Guild of America who guided telefilms starring the likes of Jean Stapleton, Denzel Washington, Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn, has died. She was 95.

Petrie died Tuesday of natural causes at her home in Los Angeles, her family announced.

Survivors include her sons Daniel Petrie Jr., the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Beverly Hills Cop, and Donald Petrie, director of films including Mystic Pizza and Grumpy Old Men. She was married to Emmy-winning director Daniel Petrie from 1957 until his death in 2004.

The H Collective (Brightburn) is teaming with Breaking Bad exec producer and Rain Man producer Mark Johnson on coming-of-age film The Vineyard, which will be directed by Mark Steven Johnson (Love Guaranteed) from Tory Kamen’s script.

“Foodie drama” The Vineyard will follow an American teenager whose life is uprooted when she unexpectedly moves to Italy to live with a grandfather she never knew existed. Pic is due to get underway in Italy in mid-2021.

Oscar-winner Johnson will produce with Tom Williams under their Gran Via Productions banner alongside The H Collective, who will also finance. Kent Jianhui Huang will produce for The H Collective with Tessie Groff overseeing the project for the company.

The Vineyard will be The H Collective’s second collaboration with Gran Via, following their partnership on Christopher Cantwell’s thriller The Parts You Lose starring Aaron Paul, Scoot McNairy and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

British actor Geoffrey Palmer, known for appearing in a large variety of stage, movie, and television roles over the past several decades, has sadly passed away. Having appeared in several episodes of Doctor Who, the official Twitter account posted that they were "sad to report the death" of the veteran performer, listing the episodes he had starred in. It was also confirmed by his agent that Palmer died peacefully at his home following a short illness. He was 93 years old.

Palmer was born on the 4th of June in 1927 in London, England. After serving as a corporal instructor in small arms and field training in the Royal Marines, Palmer had turned his attention to performing. In the 1950s, he was appearing in stage productions at the Royal Court and for the National Theatre Company, including productions of Weest of Suez and Sabrina Fair.

There are only two months left to go in this truly hellish year and relatively new streaming service HBO Max is trying to make the best of them. While most other streamers recover from Halloween and get prepared for Christmas, HBO Max is using November 2020 to fill out its servers.

Things are pretty light not the new original series front this month with only Industry (Nov. 9) and His Dark Materials season 2 (Nov. 16) making a splash. But the streamer has a couple of notable original films to complement them. Between the World and Me, based on the book by Ta-Nehisi Coates, arrives on Nov. 21 and Melissa McCarthy comedy Superintelligence arrives on Nov. 26. That’s not even to mention two intriguing projects that don’t have dates yet: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reunion Special and The Mystery of Db Cooper.

Thankfully, the real appeal in November 2020 is all the fresh library...

The 90s was an amazing decade for comedic films, introducing the world to movies like Groundhog Day, Grumpy Old Men, Happy Gilmore, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Full Monty, Mrs. Doubtfire, Wayne's World, Loaded Weapon and much, much more. And while comedy in this decade is often defined by just a handful of films, there were hundreds of them released from 1991 through to 1999.

Granted, they weren't all great. But some of them were indeed fantastic comedy films that don't get the recognition they deserve and are worth watching again.

As we have just about a week left to go of October, let’s take a look at everything that’s due to arrive on HBO Max in November. It’s a big month for the WarnerMedia streaming service, with countless new movies from their legendary library being added and plenty of fresh originals dropping throughout the following weeks. HBO Max is out with its list of everything coming and going from the new streaming service, and the list includes the 2019 film “Harriet” starring Cynthia Erivo as Harriet Tubman.

The HBO Originals coming next month include season four of “Room 104,” HBO Europe’s “Foodie Love,” and documentaries like “Stockton on My Mind” and “Showbiz Kids.” Other films joining include “Motherless Brooklyn,” “Midway,” and “Last Christmas.”

Leaving at the end of the month are “Aquamarine,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Long Shot,” “Crimson Peak,” “The Sun Is Also a Star” and “X-Men.”

HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!

HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.

If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.

ABC’s venerable The Bachelor reality franchise may be getting another extension. The network floated the idea for the new show during the Monday episode of The Bachelor. A card during one of the commercial breaks sent those interested in participating to ABC’s casting page. The card was tweeted by ABC’s head of alternative programming Rob Mills with a note to Bachelor fans, “Bachelornation, give us your Grumpiest Old Men, give us your Goldenest Girls,” a reference to two of the best known comedy titles featuring mature lead characters, the Grumpy Old Men feature franchise and The Golden Girls TV series.

Mills later clarified that the show would feature men and women 65 or older.

It’s a great single-scene breakout role for Buck Henry — he wouldn’t have been comfortable playing one of the participants in the affair.
