Universal Pictures has announced the nationwide theatrical re-release of Happy Gilmore, the beloved 1996 sports comedy starring Adam Sandler as a failed hockey player turned golf sensation. Audiences nationwide can experience this comedy classic on the big screen during special screenings on April 27 and April 30.
In Happy Gilmore, Sandler stars as the titular character, an aspiring hockey player with a powerful slapshot who can neither skate nor control his volatile temper. When the Internal Revenue Service repossesses his grandmother’s house, Happy resolves to earn enough money to settle her debts and reclaim her home.
After discovering his golf swing can drive balls an extraordinary 400 feet, Happy quickly becomes an unlikely star on the PGA tour, despite his poor putting skills and frequent explosive outbursts that antagonize his more traditional competitors.
Originally released in February 1996, Happy Gilmore was created on a modest $12 million budget and earned more than $40 million during its initial theatrical run.

Throughout its 50-year run, "Saturday Night Live" has been the launching pad for some of history's most beloved comedic actors and actresses. Fans often debate which decade of "SNL" was the best, but an argument can be made that the 1990s featured some of the funniest sketches in the show's history, introducing audiences to up-and-comers who would go on to become some of the biggest names in comedy to this day. One of those young stars was none other than Adam Sandler.
After making his film debut in 1989, Adam Sandler performed stand-up comedy in clubs. At one of his performances in Los Angeles, "SNL" cast member Dennis Miller was in attendance. Impressed by Sandler's material, Miller recommended him to Lorne Michaels, which led to Sandler landing a job in the "SNL" writers' room in 1990 and eventually being promoted to featured player in the cast. As someone who’s appreciated films like Jack and Jill, and Three Blind Mice but then didn’t adore Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and its sequel, I approached Screamboat with a blend of intrigue and scepticism. The film delves into the growing trend of turning classic public-domain characters into horror icons, transforming the cheerful mascot of Steamboat Willie into a bloodthirsty nightmare. With David Howard Thornton, known for his silent yet menacing performance as Art the Clown in Terrifier, stepping into the role of this twisted rodent, I had cautious optimism.
The story unfolds aboard a late-night Staten Island ferry, where an unlucky group of passengers finds themselves trapped with a monstrous, mutated mouse that has one goal: slaughter.

Robert Pattinson, Robert De Niro and Michael B Jordan are all pulling double duty in their new films and that’s just the start
For years, dual roles have been played largely for laughs. Think of Adam Sandler’s Razzie-sweeping twin turn in Jack and Jill, or Lisa Kudrow as both Phoebe and Ursula Buffay on Friends. Eddie Murphy was always particularly prolific, his most multiplicitous performance as a clutch of Klumps for Nutty Professor II.
There are exceptions, of course. But for every Legend or The Prestige there are 10 Austin Powers, Bowfingers and – shudder – Norbits. This year, however, is giving us a more dramatic breed of duplicate. Robert De Niro will pull double Don duty in The Alto Knights, Michael B Jordan will play twin leads in the supernatural Sinners and a pair of Robert Pattinson clones is currently headlining Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17.

Jack and Jill is peak Adam Sandler, outrageously goofy and packed with over-the-top humor. When it hit theaters, it didn’t exactly win over critics, but over time, it’s become one of those so-bad-it’s-good comedies that deserves a second look.
With a star-studded cast, including Al Pacino in a role no one saw coming and a hilarious Johnny Depp making a cameo wearing a Justin Bieber T-shirt, the film had all the ingredients for a wild ride.
Al Pacino and Adam Sandler in Jack and Jill. Credits: Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.
Moreover, Sandler played both Jack and his loud, overbearing twin sister, Jill. Here’s how he brought this chaotic comedy to life.
Why was Johnny Depp at a Lakers game wearing a Justin Bieber T-shirt?!
Adam Sandler‘s Jack and Jill might not have been a hit with critics, but it had it all: laughs, heart, and a shockingly star-studded lineup.

Britain’s Greatest Ghost Stories is billed as two episodes of a TV “series” that follows a team of paranormal investigators who use modern techniques and advanced technology to look into some of the most famous ghost stories in and around Great Britain.
In reality, this is more of a mockumentary, from writer/director Steven M. Smith, that delves into two of the UK’s most renowned hauntings: Britain’s most haunted building, Borley Rectory, and the eerie Pluckley Village in Kent, reputedly the most haunted village in Britain.
Smith is a filmmaker who’s more than familiar, in fact you might say he has a fascination with, the Borley Rectory – the subject of the first half of this short film – having made not one but Two feature films about the locale in the past,...

Hollywood has produced many famous actors in decades of filmmaking with great movies. Still, even the best actors occasionally take on roles in films that become major failures. Yet some greats can still shine with their talents despite bad scripts and directing.
Sometimes, a terrible film can include a stellar performance by a talented actor. In fact, some less-than-stellar films have even earned Academy Award nominations for roles where an actor outperformed their subpar surroundings, marking one of the most unique trends in cinema.
Al Pacino’s Commitment to His Craft Is Commendable Jack and Jill (2011)
Adam Sandler’s film Jack and Jill often lands on the list of the worst comedies ever made, and for good reason. Crude, repetitive jokes and an incoherent plot earned Jack and Jill 10 Razzie Awards, including one for “Worst Film.” Sandler had many hits in his career, but his dual role in this movie was rather annoying,...

Jeremy Strong has no desire to host “Saturday Night Live” — but not because he takes himself too seriously, he says. Stop rolling your eyes and watch his viral, self-deprecating Dunkin’ Donuts Super Bowl ad.
The short film, which was directed by Ben Affleck, features Strong having an “Apocalypse Now”-esque moment with coffee grinds and trying to “get into character” in his trailer.
“I wanted to poke fun at this idea of me as this sententious, self-serious actor,” Strong told Variety. “It was my response to the idea that I ‘don’t get the joke.'”
He added, “I’ve never wanted to host ‘Saturday Night Live.’ I’m someone who needs a certain degree of control in order to be free, and I need to do a lot of preparation. But this felt like a chance, in a way, to do a single ‘Saturday Night Live’ sketch, just one...

As January wraps up, Hulu is keeping the momentum going with an impressive lineup of new titles next month. Whether you’re into movies, TV shows, or both, there’s plenty to keep you entertained throughout February.
Hulu is starting strong with over 60 new titles arriving on February 1 alone. Some standout additions include Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2, as well as all four seasons of the classic ’90s drama New York Undercover.
Reality TV fans will also have something to look forward to with the season six premiere of The Kardashians.
But as exciting as the new arrivals are, there’s always the bittersweet reality that some beloved titles are leaving. In February, Hulu will only be removing movies, so TV lovers can breathe easy. However, the list of departing films includes some good titles, like Titane (2021) and Spencer (2021), which earned Kristen Stewart an Oscar nomination.

Say goodbye to those New Year greetings and memes, because February is almost here. Time to really sink our teeth into 2025 and how it’ll look, and of course that means beefing up your watchlist. As always the libraries of Hulu and Disney+ (and multiple available bundles) are here to help, with new shows and movies (both family friendly and… a little unfriendly) available to stream.
Along with ongoing episodes of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” Disney+ will debut all of “Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” Season 2 and plenty of other great titles for young viewers. “The Lion King at the Hollywood Bowl” special will recapture the magic of a live performance, and “Harlem Ice” follows a girls’ figure skating team through their competitive season.

This article contains major spoilers for "Squid Game" season 2.
The first season of Hwang Dong-hyuk's smash hit series "Squid Game" ended with a winner. Player 456, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), was the last man standing, winning 45.6 billion won and changing his life permanently. At the end of "Squid Game" season 2, not only was Gi-hun back in the games, but after seven episodes, the games were still ongoing. Players split themselves into two factions — those who want to keep playing, and those who want to go home while they still can — with Gi-hun leading a riot against the guards that unfortunately failed almost as quickly as it began. This shocking cliffhanger will certainly keep audiences hooked until season 3 arrives sometime in the summer of 2025, but for those who were wise enough to stay around after the credits rolled, there's an even bigger mystery hanging over the games.

This is our final round-up before the end of 2024, and it’s a good one. There are plenty of gift ideas lurking here––some choices to enjoy during time off, too. Note also that The Film Stage Holiday Gift Guide includes a list of my favorite cinema books from the last 12 months. One of those picks kicks off this column, and it is written by none other than the great Al Pacino.
Sonny Boy by Al Pacino (Penguin Press)
Al Pacino’s memoir, Sonny Boy, is easily one of the most eagerly awaited books of 2024. And for me, this look at the actor’s life and career more than lives up to the hype. Many highlights have already earned some social-media chatter––most notably young Al’s penis trauma (!), a near-death experience after a recent bout with Covid, and the reasons behind his decision to do Adam Sandler’s Jack and Jill.

One of Adam Sandler's most panned films is getting a free streaming home. While most critics have advised against watching the movie, fans of the funnyman will be able to judge its quality for themselves without paying a dime.
On Jan. 1, Sandler's Jack and Jill will be made available to watch on the free streaming platform Tubi. Directed by Dennis Dugan with a story by Ben Zook, the film was co-written by Sandler alongside Steve Koren. The comedy movie featured Sandler starring in dual roles as Jack and Jill, twin siblings spending time with one another during the holidays. It was released in theaters on Nov. 11, 2011, and in terms of its finances, the movie was a modest success, as it grossed nearly $150 million, but with a fairly high budget of nearly $80 million.

In Dennis Dugan's widely maligned 2011 comedy film "Jack and Jill," Adam Sandler played Jack, an advertising executive who was desperate to close a valuable account with Dunkin' Donuts. Jack million-dollar idea for the campaign is to secure the services of Al Pacino, as his name sorta-rhymes with the bakery's new coffee product, the Dunkaccino. Pacino plays himself in "Jack and Jill," and Jack repeatedly tries to get the actor's attention in public, as to make an impromptu ad pitch. Jack only becomes successful after Pacino expresses romantic interest in his twin sister Jill (also Sandler).
Audiences are then "treated" to the complete version of Jack's Dunkin' Donuts commercial, and it has become the stuff of cinematic infamy. Pacino raps awkwardly about the Dunkaccino, making references to his own filmography. Sample lyrics: "Attica, hoohah, latte lite/This whole trial is out of sight/They pulled me back in with hazelnut,...

Even comedy legends have bad movies, and now one of Adam Sandler's worst is available on a free streaming service. The king of funny voices and weird bits doesn't always succeed and his attempt at The Nutty Professor failed pretty spectacularly. Now available on Vizio's streaming platform, WatchFree+, if you have a Vizio device, you can watch the 2011 film Jack and Jill this month. In the holiday film, Sandler plays a brother and a sister who shouldn't ever see each other and yet are forced together for Thanksgiving.

Ben Stiller went uncredited on the 1996 comedy Happy Gilmore, where he had a small role as Hal L., a nursing home orderly who torments the elderly people in his care, dropping lines like, “You can trouble me for a warm glass of shut-the-hell-up!” Nearly thirty years later, Stiller is bringing Hal L. back to life, as he has been spotted on the set of the currently-filming Happy Gilmore 2!
Here’s what Stiller’s Hal L. is looking like these days:

Just Go with It is often considered to be one of the worst Adam Sandler movies, but one detail about it makes the fact that it is a remake of a 1969 Oscar-winning comedy so much funnier. While Adam Sandler has been in some great movies like Punch-Drunk Love and Uncut Gems, he has also been in a lot of bad comedies, earning him a negative reputation in the genre. However, Just Go with It is among the worst films that he is been in, with it continuing a trend of him appearing in remakes that are far worse than the originals.
Adam Sandler got his start in comedy movies, and while he has had some great ones like The Wedding Singer and Happy Gilmore, he has also been in a lot of really bad ones. The 2000s and 2010s saw Sandler appear in movies like Jack & Jill, Pixels, The Ridiculous Six,...

In Jack and Jill, Adam Sandler hilariously embraced the challenge of playing both twins who can’t stand each other. The comedy follows their chaotic antics as Jack desperately tries to convince Al Pacino, yes, the legendary actor himself is in the movie, (quite possibly the wirdiest detour he ever took) to star in an ad for him. The catch? Jack has to tolerate his sister Jill, because, surprise! Pacino has a crush on her!

Despite the film being one of the most roasted in his career, Sandler threw himself into both roles like a champ, especially when it came to the fabulously over-the-top Jill.
How Adam Sandler Prepared for Playing Jill
In his comedy career, Adam Sandler has truly done it all, even donning a dress and playing a woman, and let’s be honest, he did it with his whole heart and soul!

In his book, the Oscar winner shared in 2011, he started “to get warnings that my accountant at the time, a guy who had lots of celebrity clients, was not to be trusted.”
After the accountant’s mismanagement of his finances and over spending, Al says he “went broke.”
“In this business, when you make $10 million dollars for a film, it’s not $10 million. Because after the lawyers, and the agents, and the publicist, and the government, it’s not $10 million, it’s four and half in your pocket,” he wrote. “But you’re living above that because you’re high on the hog.

Al Pacino has opened up about having to make drastic career changes at one point in his life after losing all his money in a Ponzi scheme.
The veteran actor shared in his recently published memoir Sonny Boy that he “had $50 million, and then I had nothing” due to a corrupt accountant, who eventually served time in prison for the scheme. Pacino said in 2011, he started “to get warnings that my accountant at the time, a guy who had lots of celebrity clients, was not to be trusted.”

Finally, it seems we have an explanation as to why Al Pacino starred in Adam Sandler’s “Jack and Jill.”
The Al Dunkaccino rap has lived rent free in many a cinephile’s minds since the infamously maligned film came out in 2011. Now, Pacino is claiming that he only took on the role because he lost all of his finances as part of Ponzi scheme.

Pacino said that he “had property, but I didn’t have any money” due to his over-spending. Perhaps he shouldn’t have turned down “Star Wars”….

Despite his acclaim as a Hollywood star, Al Pacino has revealed that his spending habits have continually placed him in severe financial trouble.
In his new memoir Sonny Boy, Pacino revealed, “When I finished making The Godfather, I was broke, not that I ever had any money, but now I owed money…my manager and agents got their cuts of my salary while I had to live on support from [ex-girlfriend] Jill Clayburgh.”
Pacino made $35,000 for his role as Michael Corleone in the first installment of The Godfather and he reprised the 1972 role in 1974 due to his money struggles.

While it may have looked like Al Pacino may have cynically made movies just for a paycheck at a certain point in the 2000s era, the Academy Award-winning star admits that it is what it seems. However, it was also out of desperation. You may be seeing Pacino making the promotional rounds lately. This is because the iconic Godfather and Scarface star is releasing an autobiography titled Sonny Boy (which is named after the nickname his mother would call him). In Sonny Boy, Pacino would be candid about falling prey to a crooked accountant who had lost all of his money in a Ponzi scheme, then eventually went to prison.

Al Pacino writes in his recently-published memoir “Sonny Boy” that he was forced to make dramatic career changes after losing all of his money due to a corrupt accountant who eventually served seven and a half years in prison for running a Ponzi scheme. The accountant mismanaged the Oscar winner’s funds, bringing Pacino’s savings from a staggering $50 million to zero dollars.

The cast and director of the haunting thriller “Went Up the Hill” say the film helped them overcome their own “personal ghost” on set, and that hopeful journey to healing is what ultimately made them sign on to be part of the project.
“When I received the script, I was mourning someone who died. I was very much living with a ghost — it felt like living with a ghost,” actress Vicky Krieps told TheWrap’s Steve Pond at TheWrap’s 2024 TIFF Studio sponsored by Moët & Chandon and Boss Design. “I didn’t know how to get rid of it [or] move past it. I received the script, not only was it challenging to think that we could play three people as two actors, but also the ghost component as the way I read it, in a modern psychological sense.”
The “Phantom Thread” actress continued: “There has to be courage of...

Writer-director Samuel Van Grinsven says that his new film “Went Up the Hill” was inspired by a single image of two people in a room, a coffin between them, both equally mourning the person inside, but knowing next to nothing about one another.
His film, which debuts this week at the Toronto International Film Festival, sees a young man, Jack (Dacre Montgomery), travel to a remote part of New Zealand to attend the funeral of his estranged mother. There he meets her grieving widow, Jill (Vicky Krieps). But his mother’s spirit returns, inhabiting both of their bodies to speak to the other one and instigating a threatening three-way nocturnal dance.
The film is financed with principal production investment from the New Zealand Film Commission and Screen Australia with support from Screen CanterburyNZ, Create Nsw, Spectrum Films, Stage 23, Rm Sound, Head Gear Films, Fulcrum Media Finance and the New Zealand Government’s Screen Production Grant.

In Adam Sandler’s newest Netflix stand-up special Love You, the Uncut Gems and Jack and Jill star’s Safdie-Sandler era struggles under the massive weight of his many dick jokes.
Sandler’s first collaboration with the elite indie filmmaker Josh Safdie proved to be one of the most important projects of his career. When Uncut Gems premiered in 2019, it had been 17 years since Punch-Drunk Love last proved that The Sandman could pull off a more nuanced role than “man-child who yells a lot” in a film that’s more artistically ambitious than the average Dunkin’ Donuts commercial. The success of Uncut Gems led to a renaissance in Sandler’s non-family-film career as he went on to produce and star in more challenging projects in his pursuit of an Oscar nomination that continues to this day.
However, the change of direction within Sandler’s career that culminated in the release...

The trailer just dropped for Mr. Throwback, a new mockumentary series starring Happy Endings’ Adam Pally, Saturday Night Live’s Ego Nwodim and… The Golden State Warriors’ Steph Curry?
Produced by David Wain, Mr. Throwback actually looks pretty funny for a show starring an NBA point guard in a prominent role. Come to think of it, there have been more than a few solid comedies featuring pro basketball players, such as…
5 Marques Johnson in ‘White Men Can’t Jump’
When we think of White Men Can’t Jump, we tend to think of Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson, and of course, Jeopardy! champion Rosie Perez.
But it also features former NBA player Marques Johnson as Raymond, an aggrieved victim of Billy and Syd’s hustle. Johnson later revealed that the character was based on real-life basketball player Reggie Harding, who died tragically in 1972.
4 Michael Jordan in ‘Space Jam’

Who do you think would die first in a four-way battle royale between Seth Rogen, Will Ferrell, Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler? Who do you think has had the least inspiring film career between those four? Are both answers the same?
Look, anyone who has ever written and starred in a mid-budget comedy produced by a major studio is doing pretty okay from a career standpoint, so it would be ludicrous to suggest that any of the men mentioned above is somehow a failure, despite what their biggest haters may say. But speaking of haters, only one of those four funnymen has a large and devoted anti-stan movement on Twitter that relishes in taking every opportunity to snarkily reply to a picture of him lighting a giant fake bong at a Hollywood Bowl show and tell him, “We get it man.”
