The latest indie feature from director/actress Alexi Pappas mocks the very idea of creating…well, anything. Pappas and Jeremy Teicher helm “Not An Artist” from a script they co-wrote with “Veep” alum Matt Walsh, who also stars.
“Not An Artist” centers on a artist-in-residency program overseen by an enigmatic patron (RZA) who may or may not be a cult leader. Per the official synopsis, the film follows “artists in turmoil who face a make-or-break ultimatum: unlock their full creative potential or abandon art forever. Yet, the unexpected intrusion of an outsider (Walsh) jeopardizes the program’s delicate balance.”
Haley Joel Osment, Rosalind Chao, Cleopatra Coleman, Paul Lieberstein, and Robert Schwartzman, whose Utopia is releasing the film, also star. Schwartzman founded Utopia in 2019, and has distributed films such as “Divinity” and “We’re All Going to the World’s Fair,” and contributed marketing...

Professional wrestler turned actor Dave Bautista recently starred in an action comedy film called The Killer's Game, and the movie's poor reception has many wondering where the project went so wrong. Patrick Lussier's 2011 film "Drive Angry" might belong to a genre hereby designated "neo-grindhouse." There was a wave of films in the late 2000s and early 2010s that sought to evoke the style or the content of a very specific type of exploitation movie that was popular in the 1970s. In addition to the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez 2007 twofer "Grindhouse" and its spinoffs, films like "Redline," "The Man with the Iron Fists," "Turbo Kid," "Kung Fury," "Hatchet," "Torque," "Deathgasm," "House of the Devil," and "The Love Witch" popped up on the regular.
"Drive Angry" gleefully embraced its goofy, action/horror premise with aplomb. A dead race car driver named (sigh) John Milton (Nicolas Cage) escapes the clutches of Hell having stolen Satan's persona gun, a device called the Godkiller. On his tail is Satan's Accountant (William Fichtner), assigned with nabbing John and dragging him back to Hell. John,...

Dave Bautista's career has seen highs with roles like Drax in MCU, but the sequel to "My Spy" is a misfire due to lack of acting challenges. "My Spy: The Eternal City" failed to capture the magic of its predecessor, leading to low ratings and disappointing reviews for Bautista. Bautista's recent success in dramatic roles shows his potential, but "The Eternal City" falls short and lacks top-tier filmmaking to push him to greatness.

Russell Crowe’s filmography may look a little odd to the average cinephile. From “L.A. Confidential” to “Thor: Love and Thunder,” from winning an Oscar for “Gladiator” to starring in not one but two exorcism films – Crowe seems to have done it all, from high to lowbrow.

Former WWE wrestler Dave Bautista is all over Hollywood these days. He's appeared in films like "Spectre," "Blade Runner 2049," "Army of the Dead," "Dune," "Stuger," "Knock at the Cabin," and "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery." He is, of course, currently starring in the Marvel film "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," reprising the role of Drax the Destroyer. The character is the heart of this group and, along with Mantis (Pom Klementieff), the comic relief. Drax takes everything literally, sometimes thinks he can make himself invisible, and would do absolutely anything for his friends.
When he was up for the role of Drax in the 2014 film "Guardians of the Galaxy," he couldn't have known how much his life would change when James Gunn cast him. He'd been auditioning and had seen other wrestlers like Dwayne Johnson make the transition from wrestling to acting, but it hadn't really taken off for him yet.

Russell Crowe is on the brink of 60, and appears to be taking a let-'er-rip approach to acting. The three-time Academy Award nominee (and winner of one) is no longer being precious about his role choices. After hamming it up alongside RZA in the Wu-Tang Clan founder's unabashedly gory martial arts epic "The Man with the Iron Fists," Crowe eagerly sought out parts in genre flicks that were highly unlikely to bring him more Oscar glory. Though he hasn't completely cut prestige pictures out of his cinematic diet, his best performance of the last decade was as a Yoo-hoo-obsessed detective in Shane Black's brilliant buddy comedy "The Nice Guys."

Crowe also directed the film, which is scheduled to release in theaters on Nov. 16. It’ll land on digital platforms on Nov. 22.
Set in the world of high-stakes betting, “Poker Face” stars Crowe as tech billionaire and gambler Jake Foley, who offers his best friends a chance to win more money than they’ve ever dreamed of. But to play, they’ll have to give up the one thing they spend their lives trying to keep…their secrets. As the game unfolds, the long-time pals will discover what is really at stake.
Along with Crowe and Hemsworth, the cast includes RZA of Wu-Tang Clan fame and “Fast and Furious” star Elsa Pataky. Stephen M. Coates wrote the screenplay with Crowe.

It’s last call for a number of great movies leaving HBO and HBO Max in March. Fortunately, the month is also packed with new movies and shows, but if you were planning to revisit any of the films below, now’s your chance.
The good news is you won’t have to squeeze in any binge-watching – there are no series leaving HBO Max this month, just films. Expiring titles of note include Sam Raimi’s definitive horror films “The Evil Dead” and “Evil Dead 2,” Wes Anderson’s charming coming-of-age romance “Moonrise Kingdom,” the Charlize Theron-led dramedy “Tully,” Judd Apatow’s “The King of Staten Island” starring Pete Davidson, and the musical drama “Dreamgirls,” starring Jennifer Hudson in the role that earned her the Oscar.
There are also several comedy favorites expiring in March, including both “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” and “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey,...

Fresh off the long-awaited arrival of Zack Snyder’s Justice League (a.k.a. the fabled Snyder Cut), HBO Max has no need to appease fandom culture in April 2021. But the streaming service is gonna do it anyway!
The most notable new release for HBO Max this month is the HBO series The Nevers. This show, created by Joss Whedon, is set in a 19th century steampunk London and finds a sizable portion of the population (predominantly women) having been “Touched” by mysterious paranormal powers. There’s an interesting bit of irony at play here, as HBO Max is following up the Snyder Cut with a show created by his original Justice League replacement. Or at least there could have been an interesting bit of irony here, if Whedon had not bowed out from the show and been enthusiastically left out of the marketing material by HBO.

Dave Bautista might be a reasonably big name in Hollywood these days with a plum role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Drax under his belt along with appearances in big budget blockbusters Spectre and Blade Runner 2049, but having made the decision to transition from the squared circle to the silver screen when he was already in his 40s, the former WWE star had to start from the bottom and work his way up.
Bautista’s first two leading roles came in bargain basement actioners Wrong Side of Town and House of the Rising Sun, before he showed up to lend support in The Scorpion King 3: Redemption and RZA’s kung-fu B-movie The Man with the Iron Fists. Despite proving himself as a surprisingly capable dramatic actor, though, through a range of challenging roles that showed he wasn’t just a musclebound meathead,...

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought moviemaking to a screeching halt all around the world. For Daniel Wu, who works in both Hollywood and Chinese productions, it’s been about watching and waiting to see which side of the Pacific reopens their studios first.

“Cut Throat City” marks RZA’s third directed feature film, and he says it’s the project he feels the most confident in as a filmmaker.
“I actually do think I found my voice,” the founding member of rap supergroup Wu-Tang Clan tells Variety. RZA, whose real name is Robert Fitzgerald Diggs, previously helmed 2012’s martial arts-western “The Man With the Iron Fists” and 2017’s romantic drama “Love Beats Rhymes.”
“So, the third feature really for me is what I would call the consolidation piece. I feel concrete in my style of storytelling,” he says.
The action film, set in post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans, stars Shameik Moore as Blink, a college-educated aspiring comic book artist who, along with several friends, becomes entangled with a local criminal (played by Tip “T.I.” Harris) and is tasked with pulling off a dangerous heist. Eiza González, Ethan Hawke, Kat Graham and Wesley Snipes also star.

Following his 2012 directorial debut, martial arts homage The Man With the Iron Fists, and 2017’s romantic musical drama Love Beats Rhymes, filmmaker, composer and producer RZA changes up genres once again for his third feature, a convoluted New Orleans-set heist pic.

Much digital ink has been spilled about how the Marvel Cinematic Universe is perfectly cast.
Whether it’s Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Scarlett Johannson as Black Widow or Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man – undoubtedly the (mechanical) beating heart of the Infinity Saga – Marvel Studios crafted their universe around an ensemble of remarkably talented individuals.
So much so, in fact, that when it comes to many of the central characters peppered throughout the McU, we can’t imagine anyone else in their shoes. Take Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, an extraordinarily humble war machine driven by revenge. Oh, and did we mention he’s mastered the art of invisibility?
This, and all his many character traits, are brought to life beautifully by Bautista, who almost didn’t make the cut for the original Guardians of the Galaxy movie back in 2014. Or so says director James Gunn,...

WWE star Dave Bautista has carved out a very successful career now on the big screen, and proven himself to be a very talented character actor. One of his most popular roles is that of the deadpan warrior, Drax, in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Well, it may surprise you to learn that if Marvel Studios and Disney had had their way, Bautista might never have won the role. According to director James Gunn, he had to fight for Bautista to be cast as Drax, but it was well worth it.
"I had to fight for him - and it was the most worthy fight I've ever fought. Love and miss you @DaveBautista."
Many could not believe that off the back of 2012's hugely successful The Avengers that Marvel was going to put together a superhero team that consisted of a sentient tree and a talking raccoon. In the lead...

Four boyhood friends out of options after the hurricane destroys everything and leaves them with nothing reluctantly accept an offer to pull off a dangerous casino heist in the heart of the city. The ensemble cast includes Shameik Moore, Demetrius Shipp Jr., Denzel Whitaker, Keean Johnson, Eiza Gonzalez, Kat Graham, Isaiah Washington, Tip "T.I." Harris, Terrence Howard, Wesley Snipes, and Ethan Hawke. This looks like it could turn out pretty good.

The 2020 edition of SXSW has announced its features and episodic premieres for the 27th edition of the film festival, running March 13 – 22 in Austin. The 102 features and episodics in this release will be shown across the nine days of SXSW. The 2020 program was selected from 2,316 feature-length film submissions, with a total of 8,362 films submitted this year.
As has become its tradition, the festival will open with a highly anticipated studio crowdpleaser. Judd Apatow’s “The King of Staten Island,” his first feature directorial outing since 2015’s “Trainwreck,” stars Pete Davidson in a lightly fictionalized version of the “SNL” star’s own life story. The film is set for a June release from Universal Pictures.
Apatow has been a regular at SXSW, where “Knocked Up” and “Trainwreck” both launched to strong reactions, but this is his first time opening the festival. “It’s a great film,” SXSW Director of Film Janet Pierson...

Hey, your shoelaces are untied. Here, let me help you…and, there ya go. They’ll never become untied again. Why? Because I tied ’em with a Slipknot! Oh, wait, sorry, my sources are telling me you can’t actually tie shoes with a slipknot, but they’re also not helping me come up with anything clever, so what am I supposed to do?
In any case, Corey Taylor, lead singer of the masked creepy metal band, does more than just rock out looking like Michael Myers’ cousin. In fact, he’s finished up a horror movie script and is now actively looking to make the project a reality.
Speaking to both Kerrang! and Rolling Stone, Taylor’s been ecstatic about 2020, which seems like it’s going to be quite the fruitful year for the multihypenate. He’s leading Slipknot still and Stone Sour, two Grammy-winning bands, working on what...
