The sitcom has been around since the earliest days of television, when Lucille Ball, Dick Van Dyke, and Mary Tyler Moore ruled the airwaves. In 2015, there's countless more channels that existed in those days, but even with an endless amount of content to watch at any given moment, many viewers always find themselves drawn back to one particular modern classic: "The Office."
"The Office" originated in the UK, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant and starring the former as the insensitive Gm of a paper company. The mockumentary sitcom was adapted for American audiences on NBC in 2005, swapping out Gervais for Steve Carell, then known for his work on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." The show also boasted a supporting cast including future Hollywood icons like John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, and Mindy Kaling.

During last night's Final Four games on CBS, Paramount Pictures announced that the brand new theatrical trailer for Tom Cruise's highly anticipated Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning - which originally debuted at CinemaCon last week - will be released online Monday!
Whether it'll drop during the National Championship Game or earlier in the day remains to be seen, but we'd wager on the latter since that's generally when the studio tends to launch new footage. We'd then expect a TV spot to debut during the game, directing fans online to check out the full-length trailer.
Plot details remain under wraps, but we learned at CinemaCon that the film will pick up two months after the events of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, with Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) still seemingly on the run and presumably on the hunt for the sunken Sevastopol.

When an actor gets cast for a guest shot on a long-running show, it must be hard not to dream of getting written in as a full-time member of the ensemble. It’s hard to imagine The Golden Girls without Sophia (Estelle Getty), or Parks & Recreation without Andy (Chris Pratt), but they weren’t originally envisioned as series regulars. Neither was Frasier (Kelsey Grammer), and he ended up headlining a Cheers spin-off — twice! Seth Green and Jane Lynch are probably under no illusions about their function in The Conners, however. There are only four more episodes to air after this week’s, so they’re probably here to stir up trouble.
We already knew both actors would be débuting in Season Seven. The news of Green’s and Lynch’s casting was announced in March. Tonight’s episode, the season’s second, gave us our first glimpse at both of them,...

A preview for the third season of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" dropped this morning, and Trekkies -- including the ones here at /Film -- immediately extracted their tweezers. The one-minute trailer revealed a lot of interested, deep-cut Trek details that might have sailed past some of the show's more casual fans. Trekkies may have caught one or two of them on their first watch, but it's likely that die-hard fans watched this thing multiple times in a row, eager to see what sort of references they could spot.
We here at /Film spotted a few of our own, and we're happy to share our findings with enthused readers. The upcoming season will promise a few familiar characters, a few cameos from recognizable aliens, at least one impressive guest star, and the re-introduction of some known "Star Trek" technology that may or may not imply a shift in the series timeline.

Netflix spent its first decade as a TV producer establishing itself as something different from what was on linear networks and cable. The service gained acclaim with prestige, star-studded shows like “House of Cards” and “The Crown,” and when it came to comedy, even the streamer’s “lighter fare,” like “Orange Is the New Black,” had an air of prestige — hourlong, unfiltered and wildly emotional.
Now, having asserted its dominance in not just the streaming space but TV as a whole, Netflix is finally hitting its stride with something else entirely: feel-good comedies.
“Nobody Wants This,” “A Man on the Inside” and “Running Point” mark a trio of comedy hits for the streamer that marry what subscribers expect — big stars, high production value — with a feel-good vibe that made linear comedies like “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation” such beloved hits, both on TV and as licensed titles on streamers like Netflix.

As Cory Booker spoke on the Senate floor through Monday night and into Tuesday morning — an 18-hour address (not quite a filibuster, as no bill or nominee was being debated) attacking President Trump and Elon Musk’s gutting of federal programs like Medicaid and Social Security — it evoked memories of another epic legislative speech: Patton Oswalt’s Star Wars filibuster.
On Parks and Recreation‘s “Article Two” — season five, episode 19, which aired in 2013 — Oswalt played Garth Blundin, a Pawnee citizen and history buff who opposes changing hundreds-year-old local laws, no matter how nonsensical.
For example, once a year on Ted Party Day, a guy named Ted is thrown into the river — all because the word “tea” looks like “Ted” in calligraphic script.
To oppose the measure, holding up a copy of the “Pawnee Charter,” Blundin (Oswalt) delivers a “citizen filibuster” at a city hearing overseen by Councilwoman Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler,...

In Season 10, Grey's Anatomysaid goodbye to one of its fan-favorite characters. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) was immensely popular ever since the series' pilot episode, and this was underscored in her last episode, in which the show exhibited a title card full of Yang photos. Now, over 10 years after leaving the series, Oh spoke about the possibility of returning during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
In the past couple of seasons, Grey's Anatomy has opened the doors for the return of several characters, some of whom hadn't been featured in the series for years. Naturally, this makes fans wonder what other characters may end up walking the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital one more time. Since Cristina is always "present" in the series through texts sent to her best friend Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), a physical return would be more than organic. Like it or not, Jim and Pam’s relationship on The Office was initially a lot like Ross and Rachel. People were just getting frustrated with how they developed feelings for each other at different times. But then came Rashida Jones’ Karen Filippelli, who was likable, and cool, and met Jim at the right time.
But sadly, while she might have been a great choice for John Krasinski’s Jim, her screen time was cut short because… well, we hated her. No matter how good she was, or how frustrated we were with Jim and Pam’s lack of romantic coordination, at the end of the day, we wanted Jim and Pam to be together. So, Rashida Jones’ stint on The Office was cut short—thankfully, she has made peace with it.

Rashida Jones is looking back at her time on The Office.
The 49-year-old actress joined the NBC comedy in season three as Karen Filippelli, a love interest for John Krasinki‘s Jim. She had a heavily recurring role in that season, and returned a few more times in seasons four, five and seven.

Amy reacted, “You had such a tough job there, because everybody wanted Jim and Pam (Jenna Fischer), and then guess who shows up? A very likable, cool… and everyone was like, ‘Oh no, wait.’”
“It did not feel that way,” Rashida chimed in. “People did not like me.

Once upon a time in Scranton, Pennsylvania, a Dunder Mifflin merger brought some new characters into the fold on The Office, but not all of these characters ended up beloved. If you'll recall, back in the third season of the hit NBC comedy series, Jim transfers to the Stamford branch, but that branch was later merged with the Scranton branch, bringing him back to his old pals with new friends.
One of those new friends was Karen Filippelli, played by Rashida Jones, who becomes a love interest for Jim. Obviously, during this time, Jim's relationship with Pam was just getting started. When Jim arrives back at Scranton, there's a bit of jealousy on Pam's end about Jim's new relationship with Karen, and those hard feelings definitely extended much deeper from the audience.

Rashida Jones’ time on The Office was short-lived, and the actress reflects on why her character didn’t last long.
In the latest episode of Amy Poehler’s podcast Good Hang, Jones recalled her brief stint on the NBC sitcom and why she thinks she was ultimately cut.
“I had done a year on The Office and they let me go, which made sense. It made sense,” Jones said.
Jones played Karen Filippelli, who was introduced in Season 3. The character was an employee at Dunder Mifflin’s Stamford branch and became a love interest to John Krasinski’s Jim and a rival to Jenna Fischer’s Pam.
Poehler noted of the situation Jones came into, saying, “You had such a tough job there, because everybody wanted Jim and Pam, and then guess who shows up? A very likable, cool… and everyone was like, ‘Oh no, wait.”
Jones added, “It did not feel that way.

At this point, The Office is easily considered one of the most beloved series of recent years. But that doesn't mean that every character that was part of the Dunder Mifflin family was loved by everyone. During a participation on the podcast Good Hang, hosted by Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation), former The Office star Rashida Jones (Sunny) talked about her one-season stint on the hit series and revealed that there was a simple reason why she was eventually let go from the show.
Jones stated that the decision not to keep her character Karen Filipelli in the story "made sense." As Poehler pointed out, it was a difficult character to play. Karen is introduced in Season 3, after Jim (John Krasinski) asks to be transferred to a different branch because he thinks things won't work out with Pam (Jenna Fischer) and believes it's best to stay away. Television consistently pushes boundaries and produces more challenging and rewarding programs, with sitcoms like Parks and Recreation becoming some of the crowning examples of what television can accomplish. The cast of Parks and Recreation seemed to be having a pretty great time while making the show. At least that’s the sense that we get after spending countless hours watching blooper reels on YouTube.
But Rashida Jones, who played Ann Perkins on the show, just revealed that Parks and Rec’s producers once asked her to perform a scene that made her deeply uncomfortable. And it involved her love of ‘90s R&b.
The episode “Sweet Sixteen” finds the Parks Department visiting Donna’s lake house, at which point Tom learns that her cousin is, in fact, Grammy nominee Ginuwine. While Tom is floored by the revelation, Ann has absolutely no idea who that is. And, unfortunately, “not loving ‘90s R&b” is number three on Tom’s “Oh no no” list, which comes very close to ending their brief, ill-considered relationship.

The Office Season 2 ended with a cliffhanger that left the audience pining for Jim and Pam. A new character only escalated that tension in Season 3, that's why fans saw her as a villain. Rashida Jones said it made sense to hate on Karen.

Rashida Jones knows that “The Office” shipped Jim and Pam before “shipping” was even a thing — and she’s made peace with the fact that many viewers hated her character for coming in between them.
“I was the third point in the triangle, it’s fine, I accept it,” she said in a Tuesday episode of Amy Poehler’s new podcast, “Good Hang.”
Jones co-starred on “The Office” after being introduced in Season 3 as Karen Filippelli, a new co-worker for Jim (John Krasinski), who at the top of the season had just accepted a job at a different branch of Dunder Mifflin — in part to remove himself from Pam (Jenna Fischer), who was engaged when they shared a kiss at the end of Season 2. Karen becomes a love interest for Jim, ultimately creating a love triangle that many fans decidedly wanted to be an A-b relationship between the main characters.

NBC's comedic drama "Good Girls" may have been all about women criminals breaking bad, but according to TVLine, the series' cancellation in 2021 didn't have much to do with the "girls" that give the show its title.

"Parks and Recreation" actress Retta headlined the show along with "Mad Men" fan favorite Christina Hendricks and "Avatar: The Last Airbender" and "Arrested Development" actress Mae Whitman. The show also made a star out of Manny Montana, who played sexy crime boss Rio and quickly became a series breakout. According to the outlet's sources, it was Montana who tied up the series' future after negotiations...

Plenty of sitcoms jump the shark. Sometimes the cast loses a key character or the writers run out of ideas. But perhaps the most frustrating foil is when a sitcom is solid all the way through only to shit the bed for its final season, tarnishing its legacy for all time.
If only these five shows had gotten out a year earlier, we could binge rewatch them without that looming sense of dread.
1 Roseanne
Roseanne is probably the most famous example of this, as the final season undermined the basic premise of the show. The whole idea behind Roseanne was that it was a show about a struggling blue-collar family in the Midwest and its best episodes often dealt with the Conners’ money troubles. So, in the final season, what do they do? The Conners win the lottery, eliminating their relatability.

Chris Pratt Moneyball Audition(Photo Credit –Facebook)
Chris Pratt has always been full of surprises, but his Moneyball audition? That was on another level. Imagine walking into a room with Brad Pitt and the director, Bennett Miller. Most people would freeze. But not Pratt. He flipped the script—literally—and made a move no one saw coming.
During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show (via The Independent), Pratt shared the wild story. He was auditioning for the 2011 sports drama when Miller critiqued his performance, saying him to imagine he is “a guy auditioning next to Brad Pitt.” But instead of panicking, Pratt doubled down.
“I said: ‘Well, then how about this? This is my house, and you can start by taking your f***ing feet off my desk!’ I kicked him out, and I said: ‘You, Brad, get out! You guys go knock on the door and come back...

Recent rumors have claimed that the Young Avengers Disney+ series - which was originally envisioned as a movie - has been rebranded as Champions, and we're now hearing that the project has enlisted a writer.
According to Nexus Point News, who has broken a lot of news stories before the trades, Rachna Fruchbom has been tapped to write the series, and will presumably serve as showrunner/executive producer.
Fruchbom currently writes and executive produces Apple TV+’s Shrinking, and has previously served as a co-executive producer and writer on And Just Like That… and Fresh Off The Boat. She has also worked on NBC’s Parks and Recreation.
The show's roster is believed to be a mixture of characters from both teams. There does tend to be at least some crossover between the Young Avengers and the Champions in the comics, but the latter's original line-up included Miles Morales (Spider-Man...

Rob Lowe blasted California and Los Angeles leadership over how expensive in-state film and TV production has gotten. The actor and “Literally!” podcast host insisted that “everybody” involved in the production exodus to overseas production hubs like Dublin, Ireland (where his own “The Floor” films) should lose their jobs.
“There are no tax credits, so like, all those other places are offering 40% — 40%. And then on top of that, there’s other stuff that they do,” Lowe said in conversation with his former “Parks and Recreation” co-star Adam Scott earlier this month. “And then, that’s not even talking about union stuff. It’s just tax, economics of it all, so it’s criminal what California and L.A. have let happen — it’s criminal. Everybody should be fired.”

Or maybe you only recently stumbled across him in Apple TV+’s Severance, where he is a man whose consciousness is split between work and personal life. No matter you found him, Adam Scott’s been a steady presence in the industry for over 20 years now.

The series has become known for the episodic guest stars, who are usually the murderer of the week. It’s a chance to see familiar TV faces having a good time with homicide.
The first season of Elsbeth featured many actors who had previously appeared on sister shows The Good Wife and The Good Fight.
(Michael Parmelee/CBS (Canva Collage))
The current season has diversified the hiring pool by bringing in big industry-name vets to flesh out some of the more whimsical murder cases.
Who could forget Laurie Metcalf (The Conners) as Regina Coburn on Elsbeth Season 2 Episode 8 when she stabbed her producer through the eye with a stiletto heel?

Parks and Recreation is a title that evokes so much nostalgia in many fans because, apart from being one of the funniest sitcoms in the history of television, it also introduced many characters that left a lasting impact. While the show is set in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana, filming largely took place in Southern California.

The first season aired in 2009, which was entirely a different period in television programming, and according to alum Adam Scott, who played Ben Wyatt, the show would have been filmed elsewhere if it was done today as the rules before don’t apply anymore.

"Seinfeld" is one of the best sitcoms of all time, but that doesn't mean it's perfect. The absolute worst episodes of "Seinfeld" leave a bad taste in the viewer's mouth even decades later, and even Jerry Seinfeld regrets some things about the show's controversial finale. There's also a very particular production decision that some viewers may find jarring. The show uses an obvious laugh track, but only in some scenes, which leads to inconsistencies in the way the show launches into the laughter cues after jokes.
Seinfeld himself addressed the situation while answering fan questions on Reddit. According to him, the reason behind the occasional inconsistent laughter is that the makers of the show struggled to find the balance between the scenes they shot with the audience and those that didn't involve one, and tactical deployment of canned laughter was an attempt to solve the situation:

Resident Alien has been a delight since its premiere in 2021, seamlessly blending situational comedy with sci-fi world-building and a quirky imagination. Season 3, perhaps its best yet, premiered more than one year ago, and fans are eagerly awaiting Season 4 as the show heads to the USA Network.
There's a kindness and a deep understanding of the human condition laced throughout that show, and it constantly reminds me of possibly my favorite sci-fi comedy on television, a very similar (and arguably even better) series from 2016 that aired on TBS. It developed a small but loyal cult following in Season 2 after word-of-mouth spread, and was renewed for Season 3. Until it wasn't.
Extraterrestrials and People of Earth
People of Earth was one of the rare shows that critics and audiences agreed was great; it currently has an 89% critics' score and an 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Created by David Jenkins (Our Flag Means Death...

All the “Severance” thirst over Adam Scott is surprising to one person: Adam Scott. Ahead of the finale of the Apple TV+ drama, the actor behind Mark S. stopped by “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” to talk about the final episode, judge fan art and debunk wild fan theories.
Specifically, Kimmel asked Scott about the fan response to Season 2, Episode 7 “Chikhai Bardo,” which shows Mark S. (Scott) before he was severed. The episode, written by Dan Erickson and Mark Friedman and directed by Jessica Lee Gagné, has inspired several fan edits of Scott and posts about how attractive he is.
“Literally, all I did was get a haircut. It goes to show just how terrible my haircut is as Mark S., I guess,” Scott told Kimmel on Thursday night.
Scott then revealed that he does not use a wig in “Severance” and that Mark S.’s stuffy, professional hair style is “all Ben Stiller.

Elsbeth is truly saving the best for last as, after a season filled to the gills with incredible guest talent, the finale has what it takes to blow audiences’ socks off. Today, the lineup has been announced for the final episode of Season 2, and it’s quite a doozy. Included in the listing are Stephen Moyer (True Blood), Retta (Parks and Recreation), Gina Gershon (Bound), Elizabeth Lail (Five Nights at Freddy’s), Arian Moayed (You Hurt My Feelings), Alyssa Milano (Charmed), André De Shields (The Wiz), Ethan Slater (Wicked) and Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds). For those following along, yes, you have seen all these characters before, meaning Carrie Preston’s titular attorney already has a background relationship with each of them.

Mere days after she wrapped Dying for Sex, Jenny Slate chopped off all her hair.
She’d had basically the same style all her adult life, but through the process of filming the FX cancer comedy, her locks began to take on new meaning. “I felt that my long hair held the sadness, and I just needed to reboot my physicality,” she says, explaining how she got what was left of her character out of her head. “Usually an extreme haircut means, ‘Oh hey, looks like you’re getting divorced!’ ” she notes. “But this was the first time I’ve changed my appearance because something good happened to me.”
And really, Dying for Sex should be very good to, and for, Jenny Slate. It’s the sort of sure-to-get-noticed prestige limited series — debuting April 4 — that can potentially alter an actor’s career trajectory. Not that Slate, 42, needs much of a course correction.

Not every film with good reviews becomes a major commercial hit, and not all films with bad reviews are unpopular. Just like last year there have been a series of examples, including Furiosa: A Mad Max Story, The Fall Guy, and Red One.
Now, Netflix's latest film The Electric State is experiencing a similar trend. Although the film didn't receive a theatrical release and it headed straight to Netflix, the early reviews ahead of the Mar. 14 release called it "one of the worst movies of the year." The official numbers prove otherwise, as Tudumcrowns The Electric State the biggest film of the week.
For the week between Mar. 10 and 16,The Electric State amassed 25.2 million views and 53.8 million hours viewed. That is a huge feat considering the movie had only 2 full days to achieve that before Netflix stopped counting.
It became the No. 1 movie in 47 countries, including the U.S.

Netflix has unleashed the first teaser trailer for Happy Gilmore 2, bringing Adam Sandler back to the course for another round of golfing chaos…with just a touch of a nostalgic drive. Although there are still a few months until the film lands on Netflix in July, this new look is building up to a full trailer arriving sometime in the future.
The new teaser dropped on Tuesday, bringing Sandler back to the titular role, and showing off the huge ensemble cast of newcomers and returnees to the franchise, including Christopher McDonald as Happy’s old nemesis Shooter McGavin and Jule Bowen as love interest Virginia. Also along for the ride are Ben Stiller, Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio (Bad Bunny), John Daly, Sadie Sandler, Sunny Sandler, Conor Sherry, Ethan Cutkosky, Philip Fine Schneider, Maxwell Jacob Friedman, Travis Kelce, Blake Clark, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau and Paige Spiranic.

In April of 2008, writer and producer Michael Schur added a new title to his resumé after getting his start on "Saturday Night Live" and, of course, Greg Daniels' American remake of "The Office". Before "The Office" ended in 2013, Schur was pulled away to work on a show that was initially intended to be a spin-off of the mockumentary set at a Pennsylvania paper company ... a little show called "Parks and Recreation."
Wait, so was "Parks and Recreation" really originally intended to just be a spin-off of "The Office?" The answer to that, amazingly, is yes. According to an archived version of an article in New York Magazine from 2009, the year that "Parks and Recreation" premiered, when Ben Silverman took a role as the co-chairman of NBC Entertainment, the executive asked Daniels and Schur to create a spin-off of the massively popular series. As it happens, though, Schur and Daniels ended...

A decade after it ended, the NBC comedy "Parks and Recreation" continues to be one of the most beloved, online-favorite sitcoms of the 21st century. The show's blend of upbeat optimism in the form of local-government official Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) and its scathing satire of small-town America have both held up strongly. But while seven seasons of "Parks and Recreation" have aged well in retrospect, the fact that it was often a show on the bubble of either being renewed or cancelled by the network on which it aired, NBC, may well have contributed to the departure of one of its stars.
The other thing to keep in mind here is that while those seven seasons had many strong episodes, engaging arcs, and entertaining characters, there was something of a revolving door with cast members. The first and second seasons featured Paul Schneider as city planner Mark Brendanawicz before...

Critics Hated The Russo Brothers' The Electric State, But the Audience Score Tells a Different Story

Netflix's latest release, The Electric State, has all the qualities of a major blockbuster. It comes from a big studio, it has a stellar cast and critically acclaimed directors, and, despite the studio's reluctance for theatrical releases, it has a major budget.
However, The Electric State debuted with one of the worst ratings of the year. The sci-fi film debuted with an abysmal score of 10% on Rotten Tomatoes, a number that slightly increased to 14%, still a major disappointment. Following its official release on the platform, the audience score couldn't be more different, as it's over five times better than the critics' score.
While most of the critics called The Electric State a bad movie, the audience fully disagreed. Following its Mar. 14 release on Netflix, The Electric State has an audience approval score of 76%. While the score is not exactly a reason to start celebrating and greenlighting a sequel just yet,...

Henry Winkler has enjoyed an awesome career, especially for his work on the small screen. From "Arrested Development" to "Parks and Recreation" and "Barry," he's shown that he's a natural when it comes to comedy, with his role in the latter having even won him an Emmy Award. However, for many fans, he'll always be known as the lovable greaser Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli from the hit ABC sitcom "Happy Days" -- a role Winkler has admittedly worked hard to move past since the show ended in 1984.
While the role of The Fonz turned the actor into a household name, "Happy Days" was arguably a curse for Winkler. The "Happy Days" star struggled to find work after the show ended because he was typecast. Nevertheless, he remained adamant about escaping the sitcom's shadow. In fact, as he once explained during an interview with The Albuquerque Tribune, he rejected a Fonzie-centered spin-off...
