Red Fang are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, kicking things off with the announcement of a rarities collection titled Deep Cuts. The compilation, arriving March 14th, features non-album tracks, covers, and previously unreleased singles.
The stoner/sludge band formed in 2005 in Portland, Oregon, and have thus far released five studio albums, with their most recent being 2021’s Arrows. Ahead of the release of Deep Cuts, Red Fang have shared the track “It’s Always There,” which previously only appeared on the deluxe version of their 2013 album, Whales and Leeches.
“I remember really liking the melancholic vibe of ‘It’s Always There,’ but Aaron [Beam] and I had no vocal ideas coming to mind,” singer-guitarist Bryan Giles said of the track. “When I lived in San Diego, I became friendly with Pall Jenkins, and was always a fan of Three mile Pilot and The Black Heart Procession, so it was exciting...

It is always special if a TV show incorporates festive seasons like Christmas or New Year’s in its storyline. It gives us a chance to witness our favorite characters enjoying these seasonal cheers.
The Office season 7 episode 13 featured a New Year-themed plot, but it was quite noticeable that Jim was absent. Let’s find out why he was not there in the episode.
Did Jim Halpert miss out on appearing in any other episodes than Ultimatum?...

Warning: This story contains major spoilers for “The Good Place”
Ted Danson said on this week’s episode of the “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast that, because he was feeling competitive, he told John Krasinski the major plot twist at the end of “The Good Place” Season 1 before series creator Mike Schur got to tell the rest of the cast of his NBC sitcom.
“I told John right away,” Danson admitted. “I’m only competitive, by the way, with people who are at least 30 years younger than me.”
Danson dropped the bomb that “The Good Place” was, in fact, ‘The Bad Place,’ only after Krasinski said he was “off to make some amazing movie” and asked if the “Cheers” alum also had any exciting projects in the works.
“I said, ‘Well, I’m about to work with your buddy Mike Schur and we’re doing something called ‘The Good Place,...

Izuru Narashima came up with one of the best films of the previous decade in “Rebirth”, and although he did not reach the same level in the next years, his works were always decent, to say the least. His latest work is adapted by the homonymous novel by Sonoko Machida, and the title refers to a species of whales which makes sound at 52 hertz, which is too high to be heard by other whales.
52-Hertz Whales is screening at Toronto Japanese Film Festival
The story unfolds through many back and forths, with the present finding the protagonist, Kiko Mishima in the small seaside town in Oita, living in her grandmother's house, who was a geisha, and inciting much gossip among the locals. While there, she comes across a boy that is the victim of abuse by his mother, Kotomi, a local waitress who seems to really despise him. His story reminds her of her own.

Jon Favreau's "Star Wars" series "The Mandalorian," which debuted in 2019, was the first live-action "Star Wars" TV series and is set only a few years after the events of "Return of the Jedi," but a few decades before the events of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Although the titular Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) is not the fan-favorite bounty hunter character of Boba Fett (who appeared to die in "Return of the Jedi"), the exploration of a similarly-helmeted character likely served to expand on Boba Fett's backstory by proxy. It wouldn't be until later that Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) would be revealed to have survived "Jedi," and get a TV series of his own.
The first season of "The Mandalorian" involved the transport of an alien infant belonging to the same gremlin-like species as Yoda. The Baby Yoda, named Grogu, became a marketing bonanza, and Grogu merch is now plentiful across all sci-fi collectibles outlets.

Sound Mixer Richard Bryce Goodman Reflects on His Career, From ‘Death Race 2000’ to ‘Ford v Ferrari’

When Richard Bryce Goodman was a young man, his wide-ranging interests included photography, music and philosophy, but it was a present he received while growing up in Baltimore that seems to have had the biggest influence on his career arc.
“I had a darkroom from age 12 where friends and I used to make our own R&b mixes off Wwin radio with a fancy tape recorder that was given to me by a rich uncle,” says Goodman, an Academy Award-nominated sound mixer.
Goodman’s early training was eclectic. In the late ’60s, he attended London’s Slade School of Fine Art, gaining insight into moviemaking from the institution’s in-house film legend, Thorold Dickinson. Returning stateside, he earned a degree in fine art and philosophy from Bucknell University in 1970. He began shooting documentaries around the college’s art classes using a Bolex camera stocked with film short ends from the psych department.

In just one season, Dr. John Thackery (Clive Owen) has gone from a highly-regarded surgeon to a drug-addled mess when Cinemax's critically-acclaimed series The Knick returns for Season 2 with the premiere episode Ten Knots, debuting Friday, October 16 at 10 Pm Et. While we wait for the season premiere to arrive in just a few short days, the network has released the first clip from this upcoming episode, which shows that Thackery has become quite unhinged. After a surprise visit by Dr. Everett Gallinger (Eric Johnson), Thackery becomes obsessed with the time.
Set in the year 1901, The Knick faces an upheaval, as Dr. John Thackery's absence (due to his hospitalization for cocaine addiction), a dearth of affluent patients, and financial missteps have led to the board's decision to shutter The Knickerbocker Hospital in favor of a new building uptown. Authentically female in how it gets inside a lifelong friendship between two women, and as wisely funny as it is sharply poignant. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast, desperate for movies about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
It is a great tragedy of our culture that men are not encouraged to have the same sort of intensely emotional and hugely supportive relationships among themselves that women have with other women. Men are forced to find their emotional support, sometimes their only such support, from wives or girlfriends, while their wives and girlfriends have entire networks of friends — who slot into a sometimes massive and ever-shifting hierarchy that starts with Occasional Drinking Buddy to Bff — to whom we turn for advice, encouragement, mutual bitching sessions, pats on the back, and so much more.

With the "Odd Couple" pairing of Robert Redford and Nick Nolte, director Ken Kwapis ("Big Miracle," "He's Just Not That Into You") has made an unmistakable buddy road picture in "A Walk in the Woods." It's certainly laconic vs. loquacious on the Appalachian Trail: one part existential journey and another part environmental reverie, as told by sardonic travel writer Bill Bryson (Redford) in his memoir, adapted for the screen by Redford's producing partner, Bill Holderman. Of course, it's easy to see the attraction for both Redford and Nolte: "A Walk in the Woods" perfectly plays off their iconic personas. And for Redford it's even more personal, about aging and learning to co-exist with the environment (a marvelous bookend to "Jeremiah Johnson"). But for Kwapis, who's always had a facility for straddling comedy and drama, it was about finding the sweet spot where those two conflicting personalities could best...

Robert Redford and Nick Nolte are far from typical pensioners in a trailer for the new adventure comedy A Walk in the Woods.
The film adaptation of author Bill Bryson's memoir of the same name stars Redford as the popular humorist as he returns to the Us after 20 years abroad.
Bryson dreams of reconnecting with his country by hiking the 2,000-mile Appalachian Trail, but the trip becomes more than he bargained for when his cranky friend (Nick Nolte) tags along.
A Walk in the Woods boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Academy Award winner Emma Thompson, Nick Offerman, Mary Steenburgen and Kristen Schaal.
This is Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants director Ken Kwapis's follow-up to 2012 conservation drama Big Miracle.
A Walk in the Woods is released in the Us on September 2 and in the UK on September 11.

In this new comedy adventure, celebrated travel writer, Bill Bryson (Academy Award winner Robert Redford), instead of retiring to enjoy his loving and beautiful wife (Academy Award winner Emma Thompson), and large and happy family, challenges himself to hike the Appalachian Trail – 2,200 miles of America’s most unspoiled, spectacular and rugged countryside from Georgia to Maine.
The peace and tranquility he hopes to find, though, is anything but, once he agrees to being accompanied by the only person he can find willing to join him on the trek – his long lost and former friend Katz (Academy Award nominee Nick Nolte), a down-on-his-luck serial philanderer who,...

Fun fact: Richard Linklater circled this project for a while before moving on. And while we would've preferred to see that version, Ken Kwapis ("Big Miracle," "License To Wed") has delivered a sugary take on "A Walk in The Woods," which seems like the easy-to-digest fare that his previous credits would indicate. And today, the first trailer for the film has landed. Based on the memoir by Bill Bryson, Robert Redford and Nick Nolte lead the movie as two pals who team up to hike the 2,100-mile-long Appalachian Trail. The twist is that they're old, so the comedy falls in that vein, which means your parents will probably really dig this, otherwise this might make some decent airline fare at some point. "A Walk In The Woods" premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, and while it couldn't be slotted on the schedule of our team in Park City,...

American Sniper easily led the box office for the third weekend in a row, while the three new wide releases flopped with less than $18 million combined.American Sniper added $30.7 million, which fell just shy of a new record for Super Bowl weekend behind Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour ($31.1 million). Unfortunately, it was off 53 percent from last weekend, which suggests that the intense interest surrounding the movie has cooled off quite a bit. Still, that $30.7 million ranks 21st all-time among third weekends, and that's with a hand tied behind its back thanks to the Super Bowl.To date, American Sniper has earned $247.8 million, which ranks sixth among 2014 releases. It could still wind up becoming the highest-grossing movie from 2014 ahead of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay*Part 1, though that no longer seems guaranteed.Playing at 2,893 locations, Project Almanac flopped with $8.3 million. That's the second worst debut...

American Sniper earned more than all three new releases combined on Friday, which sets it up to easily take first place for the third weekend in a row.The Clint Eastwood war drama added an estimated $10.02 million yesterday, which is off 45 percent from the prior week. Considering how well it held last weekend, that's a surprisingly steep drop; with the Super Bowl coming up on Sunday, Sniper now seems poised to fall around 50 percent over the full three-day weekend ($30 to $32 million).Through 15 days in wide release, American Sniper has earned $227.1 million. That ranks ninth among 2014 releases; by the end of the weekend, it will move up to sixth place ahead of Transformers: Age of Extinction. In second place, found footage time travel movie Project Almanac flopped with $3.2 million. In comparison, Chronicle, The Woman in Black and Warm Bodies all opened over $8 million on the Friday ahead of the Super Bowl.

Chicago – When the assignment was to find a comedy team to take on impersonating police officers, funny men Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. – of the TV series “New Girl” – fit the uniforms perfectly for the new film, “Let’s Be Cops.” Add in the always hilarious Rob Riggle, and let the games begin.
Riggle is a well known comic character presence on “The Daily Show” and films like “The Hangover,” “21 Jump Street,” “Big Miracle” and the upcoming “Dumb and Dumber To.” Riggle is also famous for having served in the Marines and Marine Reserves for a total of 23 years – retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel – and began his comedy career after his first military stint.

I’m really excited for The Knick, a historical medical drama starring Clive Owen and directed by Steven Soderbergh, which Cinemax will be unveiling in August. This is the same network we jokingly call Skinemax, and which features action-packed, nudity-heavy series like Strike Back, Hunted and Banshee. However, The Knick definitely looks like a promising new start for the network in a new trailer for the series.
In the trailer, we’re introduced to the high-pressure, high-stakes existence of Dr. John W. Thackery (Owen), a doctor at New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital in the early twentieth century. As he pushes to expand the known boundaries of modern medicine, he encounters a myriad of personal and professional dilemmas.
The main draw for a lot of viewers will probably be Owen, who looks like he’s perfectly suited for this gritty role, but I’m most excited to see Soderbergh’s direction on the series.

The mutants ruled the multiplex over Memorial Day weekend. "X-Men: Days of Future Past" shot to the top of the box-office heap over the holiday, bringing in $91.4 million Friday-Sunday and an estimated $111 million Friday-Monday in over 4,000 locations, making it the second-largest opening of any "X-Men" film behind only "X-Men: The Last Stand." That Brett Ratner-directed threequel brought in $102.8 million over Memorial Day weekend 2006 (and $122.8 million over all four days). Among more recent entries in the "X-Men" franchise, "Days of Future Past" was a vast improvement on 2011's "X-Men: First Class" ($55.1 million opening) as well as last summer's "The Wolverine" ($53.1 million), while among Memorial Day weekend openers it ranks fifth of all-time behind 2007's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The World's End," 2008's "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," "X-Men: The Last Stand" and last summer's "Fast & Furious 6." Adam Sandler goes to Africa, via the tampon aisle, and assumes you’ll agree with him that racism and sexism are family values worth celebrating. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): I hate Adam Sandler and everything he stands for
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Attempting to determine the very worst thing about the oeuvre of Adam Sandler is akin to trying to decide which sort of cancer is the most horrible: even to finally settle on one isn’t to say that all the rest aren’t blights on humanity. But I think I may now have it.
It’s the smugness. The Sandler smug reaches a new nadir of appalling with Blended. For everything is presented with the same self-satisfied confidence that the audience is entirely onboard with the indisputable fact of every assumption with which the film presents us.

This summer, we're going to be taking a look at the summer movie season from a number of different angles. Kristopher Tapley put up a great piece yesterday about his favorite summer movie summer, back in 1989, and you can expect three more of those. We also just posted a gallery of people we think have a chance at being breakout stars by the time September rolls around. But each month, we're also going to be taking a look at people who are at a crossroads, people who are having defining moments, people who are either on the wane or on the rise, and we're going to spotlight them. We're going to look at the stakes for them this summer, and how this could change things for them. May is kicking off the summer movie season this year with "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," which brings us to our first star… Emma Stone...

Six big words fill the screen of the 30-second teaser ad for the upcoming Cinemax drama The Knick: Coming Soon. Steven Soderbergh. Clive Owen. To any serious film and television viewer, you do not really need to know anything else.
But, in case you want a bit more context, The Knick is Soderbergh’s first major project that he is attached to since his retirement from film and the quick glimpse below promises a marvellously macabre time. The show takes place in New York City during the early 1900s at the Knickerbocker Hospital – the location whose nickname gives the series its title. It was one of the most revolutionary institutions in treating polio, alcoholism and gynecology, and the teaser is filled with some rather bloody, unorthodox stages of procedure.
Clive Owen is in the lead as doctor John W. Thackery, who seems enthralled by living “in a time of endless possibility.

Even Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone aren't good enough to get Australian cinemagoer bums in seats it would seem.
Hopscotch Films have reportedly shelved plans to theatrically release the $50 million Arnie-Sly team-up action thriller "Escape Plan" in Australia. The title will now go direct-to-disc.
'Escape' fizzled upon release at the U.S. domestic box-office with just $23 million, but has done quite well overseas with a $78 million haul outside North America.
In Australia, both "The Expendables" movies and Arnie's recent "The Last Stand" were solid performers, making the choice all the more perplexing. Fans are understandably unhappy, flooding Hopscotch's Facebook page with complaints.
Hopscotch themselves haven't confirmed it on their social media outlets, though at least two cinema chains have confirmed the pulling of the film which was to score a release on November 28th.

"Susan 313" is a 2012 NBC pilot created by and starring Sarah Silverman, produced by Ron Howard and directed by Ken Kwapis ("The Office," "Big Miracle"). In it, Silverman plays a newly single woman attempting to return to her old life after the end of a decade-long relationship, with Jeff Goldblum guest starring as her ex and Tig Notaro, June Diane Raphael and Harris Wittels also making appearances. "Susan 313" never made it to series, but Silverman's just posted the previously unseen pilot to her Jash YouTube channel -- you can watch it below. Most pilots are left to float in the ether, forever unseen, so it's always interesting when one surfaces and you get a glimpse of a show that never was, especially one that in this case tries to fit Silverman's acerbic persona into a more mainstream vehicle.
