Originally, the character of Sydney Gardner, Max's love interest from Max Steel (2013) was going to be in the film, but it was changed to Sofia Martinez.
This movie was filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina. At around 0:44:00 in to the film is a shot of downtown. The USCG DILIGENCE (WMEC 616) was moored up and can be seen in port in this shot. Wilmington is also an official "Coast Guard City."
Originally planned to be the first in a Max Steel film trilogy, but because of the film's box office performance, those plans were cancelled.
Skyler Samuels and Skyler Day were previously tested for Sofia Martinez before Ana Villafañe got the part.
