If The Purge had you hooked, you’re definitely not alone. The film’s eerie premise, where all crime, including murder, is legal for 12 hours, became a chilling look at the breakdown of society and what happens when law and order vanish. Released in 2013, The Purge blended home-invasion horror with a dystopian twist, capturing audiences with its high-stakes tension and unsettling exploration of human nature.
It wasn’t just another slasher film; it was a commentary on class, violence, and the darkest corners of society. The movie’s success was immediate, grossing over $300 million worldwide, and it quickly developed a cult following.

For fans who craved more of that same thrilling mix of paranoia, tension, and survival, there’s good news. There are plenty of other films that dive into similar themes of lawlessness, home invasions, and dystopian chaos.

Fortnite may be one of the most successful live-service games ever, but that doesn’t mean everything Epic Games releases is a hit. Especially in the cosmetics and skins department. We all know there are some truly crazy skins in the game with over 2,000 and counting catalog of skins in the game.
We’ve got everything from superheroes and zombies to literal food mascots so Epic Games has certainly not been short on creativity. But for every fan-favorite skin, there are also ones that we think have aged poorly or just kinda sucked.
5 Fortnite skins that everyone hates
These are the skins that many players love to hate. Let’s take a look at five of the most hated skins in Fortnite.

Modern horror icons Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill are bringing Road of Bones to the silver screen.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the hit filmmaking duo who most recently served as producers on The Gorge are slated to bring author Christopher Golden's 2022 novel Road of Bones to the silver screen for Sony Pictures' Screen Gems. As with previous projects such as Sinister and The Black Phone, Derrickson and Cargill will share writing duties, while Derrickson will helm the film as director. Road of Bones is the first project to emerge from the first-look deal Derrickson and Cargill's Crooked Highway reached with Sony/Screen Gems.
Road of Bones takes place on the Kolyma Highway, a very real 1,200 mile stretch of road in Siberia that crosses through some of the most treacherous and unforgiving terrain on Earth. Per the novel's official synopsis, "Felix Teigland, or "Teig," is a documentary producer, and...

The duo behind Sinister, Doctor Strange and The Black Phone, Scott Derrickson and his frequent partner C. Robert Cargill, are keeping busy in horror. THR reports that Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems has enlisted the pair to adapt Road of Bones, a horror novel by best-selling author Christopher Golden.
Cargill will pen the script and Derrickson will direct, with both producing via their Crooked Highway production banner.
Christopher Golden’s page-turning 2022 horror novel introduces an intense road trip set in Siberia. It follows an American documentarian, Felix “Teig” Teigland, who drives Siberia’s dangerous Kolyma Highway, collecting legends and ghost stories along the way for a planned new series. Teig and his team don’t realize until too late that they’ve embarked on a harrowing journey where supernatural threats are as likely to kill them as the unforgiving terrain.

Director Scott Derrickson is returning to horror for his next project. The filmmaker behind movies such as Marvel's "Doctor Strange" and the Apple TV+ original "The Gorge" is working once again with his creative partner C. Robert Cargill on an adaptation of the 2022 novel "Road of Bones," according to The Hollywood Reporter. The project has been set up at Sony Pictures' Screen Gems, where Derrickson and Cargill's production company Crooked Highway has a first-look deal.
Derrickson is set to direct the film. He will also co-write the screenplay alongside Cargill, whom he's worked closely with ever since 2012's breakout hit "Sinister." The duo will also produce the movie, which is based on Christopher Golden's novel, which was published by St. Martin's Press. There's no word yet on who will star in the adaptation, or how soon production will get underway.

The sinister team of Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill are tackling an adaptation of Road of Bones, a horror novel by best-selling author Christopher Golden, for Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems label.
The duo, known for their horror scares thanks to movies such as Sinister, Doctor Strange and The Black Phone, will write the screenplay with Derrickson set to direct. The two will also produce via their Crooked Highway production banner.
The project marks the first venture to skulk up from Crooked Highway’s first-look deal with Screen Gems/Sony.
Bones is a supernatural thriller set in Siberia along the Kolyma Highway, a real highway that was built in Stalinist Soviet Union using the labor of prisoners from the region’s gulags. Lore has it that hundreds of thousands of inmates perished during the construction of the 2000 km road and due to the permafrost, it was judged easier to just built atop of the bodies.

Drawing inspiration from genre staples like [Rec] and V/H/S, The Last Cabin combines found footage, survival horror, and home invasion.
Watch the trailer below ahead of the film’s VOD release on April 29 from The Horror Collective.
Trapped in a remote cabin, a film crew finds themselves stalked by three masked men who know the isolated forest and their every move.
Brendan Rudnicki directs from a script he co-wrote with brother Kellan Rudnicki.
“We set out to make horror feel real and unsettling,” said Brendan Rudnicki. “Isolated and exposed, you’re stalked by something relentless, every sound causing anxiety. The Last Cabin dives into that dirty, clawing fear, where surviving’s all you’ve got left.”
Brendan Goshay, Tatum Bates, Isabella Bobadilla, Benjamin L. Newmark, Kyree Cook, Austin J. Rhodes, Cashmere Monique, and Daniel Wheeler star.

Scott Derrickson’s The Gorge is a film that proudly revels in its absurdity, a hybrid of genres stitched together with the confidence of a director unafraid to push the limits of plausibility. Equal parts military thriller, sci-fi horror, and starry-eyed romance, it’s the kind of film that begs you to leave logic at the door and simply enjoy the ride. And for a while, it works. With Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy delivering charismatic performances, and some impressively weird creature design lurking in the depths, The Gorge almost succeeds in being the gloriously over-the-top spectacle it aspires to be. Almost.
The premise is delightfully ridiculous. Levi (Teller) and Drasa (Taylor-Joy) are elite snipers stationed on opposite sides of a vast, mist-filled gorge, tasked with preventing whatever lurks below from escaping. Their only human contact is each other – though their respective military handlers forbid communication. Naturally, this rule is ignored almost immediately.

Horror has many tropes, but one of the biggest is the jump scare. They've become commonplace in the genre over the decades as an easy way to get an audience to react, but while some, such as in Sinister and Insidious, are very effective, in lesser films, they've become an overused cheap tactic that's more about creating a physical response rather than building up true tension. There was a time though when jump scares were a rarity, which made them work more when they were used. The first ever jump in a feature film is also one of the best. In 1942's Cat People, director Jacques Tourneur and producer Val Lewton created a jump scare that will make you jump out of your seat, not out of laziness, but in brilliant and purposeful misdirection.

You probably don't have "Geoffrey Rush and John Lithgow going at each other's throats" on your 2025 Bingo card. It's worthy of note how, even though Lithgow is the villain in their new thriller The Rule of Jenny Pen, he gets top billing over Rush, an Oscar-winner from The King's Speech. It's a film that relishes its villainy, and Lithgow is riding hot after his standout — and also villainous — turn in Edward Berger's red-hot feature, Conclave. Lithgow remains very much in the news after being cast as the iconic Dumbledore character in the new and highly anticipated Harry Potter series (and being a funny part of the recent 97th Academy Awards telecast).
It's also noteworthy that Lithgow, very much an American performer, dons a flawless English accent in his new horror-thriller from IFC Films and Shudder. Meanwhile, don't sleep on the reliably committed Geoffrey Rush here, aka "Barbosa" to the...

There are plenty of haunted houses — and hotels and summer camps — in horror movies, but some of the most disturbing cinematic scares are thanks to evil objects. Like the eponymous toy in Oz Perkins’ new movie “The Monkey,” his follow-up to last year’s “Longlegs.”
While some things are obviously not going to be good news, like the hand of a dead man, any inanimate object can be cursed, whether it’s a TV, video tape, or mirror.
Here are more cursed object movies in horror movies we’ll never forget.

No genre stretches the imagination to the farthest reaches of possibility more than sci-fi, where the only limit is creativity. It’s a genre built on wonder, exploration and the thrill of discovery. Whether it’s a spacecraft journeying through space or aliens beyond understanding, the allure of sci-fi is universal. Yet, few films manifest youthful curiosity quite like Joe Dante’s Explorers.
Released in 1985, this under-the-radar gem managed to sidestep the blockbuster frenzy of its time to become a cult classic, one that still resonates with anyone – young or old – who has ever dreamed of building a spaceship in their backyard and flying off into the stars. Explorers captures the kind of wonder that only childhood can bring, where the impossible feels within reach. The Gorge had Apple TV+’s biggest film premiere since the streaming service launched in 2019.
Deadline reports that the genre-bending thriller from Scott Derrickson eclipsed Jon Watts‘ Wolfs, which pivoted from a wide release to a small theatrical and global streaming release last fall.
Apple does not divulge specific numbers, but the company confirms The Gorge drove double-digit growth globally and boosted new viewers by +80% weekend over weekend following its debut on February 14.
Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy star as as two highly-trained operatives who grow close from a distance after being sent to guard opposite sides of a mysterious gorge. When an evil below emerges, they must work together to survive what lies within.

It stands to reason that genre film lovers would make some of the best genre films. Of course, that's not a hard and fast rule — some fans-turned-filmmakers can become so blinded by their love of the movies that inspire them that they end up making a thinly veiled, watered-down version of what's come before. Yet when you're dealing with a filmmaker who has a keen creative sensibility and knows how to throw all their influences into a blender in order to come out with something that feels fresh yet familiar, then you're hitting that special sweet spot of genre cinema bliss.
Hitting that sweet spot is exactly what director Scott Derrickson has done with "The Gorge," a movie which is a veritable potpourri of genres, tones, and influences, all coming together in a way that's immensely satisfying. Derrickson has made a career out of proving his genre bonafides several times over,...

Scott Derrickson's newest film, The Gorge, has climbed to the top of the streaming charts on Apple TV+ just a day after it was released on the service. The Apple original film, which stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller, had an impressive debut and is a prime example of how Apple's original programming manages to stay relevant and stand out in a crowded library on streaming services and countless original films and series. Released on February 15, The Gorge attracted attention thanks to its two leads, well-known director, interesting premise, and blend of genres.

Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy team up with Scott Derrickson for an ambitious, enjoyable thriller. So why isn’t The Gorge being advertised anywhere?
The trailer for The Gorge, Scott Derrickson’s latest genre-bending film, doesn’t really tell the whole story. It shows Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy’s characters, highly skilled mercenaries, assigned to watch over the titular gorge, where something spooky lurks. Naturally, the two fall in love and the trailer sells The Gorge as a strange action-romance hybrid, but the reality is much more complex.
Derrickson is best known for his work in the horror genre with films like The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, Sinister and The Black Phone, the latter receiving a sequel later this year. While the aforementioned promo for The Gorge doesn’t exactly market the film as a horror, it quickly becomes one, and a good one, too.

The Gorge’s ending was all about Levi and Drasa trying to survive the horrors that existed in the town at the bottom of the titular chasm. Hired by a mysterious company called Darklake, Levi was stationed at the West Tower and Drasa at the East Tower, which were located on opposite sides of a seemingly bottomless ravine. They were told to not contact each other no matter what happened and only report back to HQ via radio on a daily basis about whether they had restocked all the weapons around the abyss and checked if the cloaking devices were working fine or not. What were those weapons and cloaking devices for? To keep these grotesque-looking humanoid creatures from getting out of the hole they were in and terrorizing human civilization. Although the nature of the job was strenuous and life-threatening, Levi and Drasa struck a chord and met each other.

Filmmaker Scott Derrickson is best known for his work in the horror genre – The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister, The Black Phone – but the director has also ventured into other worlds, such as the superhero realm with Doctor Strange. Personally, I greatly appreciate his style and this time, Derrickson tries to make the most of Zach Dean’s (The Tomorrow War) screenplay and the two Hollywood stars at his disposal, Miles Teller (Whiplash) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Furiosa), to achieve another critical and commercial success with The Gorge.

Scott Derrickson’s new Apple Original movie “The Gorge” answers only one of these questions, and unfortunately for philosophers everywhere, it’s the hot sniper question. But the rest of us will cheerfully make do. “The Gorge” is an unexpectedly romantic movie coming from the “Sinister” and “The Black Phone” director, but it’s also a gnarly monster flick with memorable beasties galore.
Miles Teller stars as Levi, a former Marine sniper who works freelance, and he’s super lonely. When a powerful figure played by Sigourney Weaver enlists Levi for a mysterious, year-long mission, he’s got nothing tying him down.

Somewhere, deep in the forests of an undisclosed location in Europe, there is a valley. The existence of this no-man’s land is a secret known to those with only the highest security clearances. Shrouded in fog and buffeted by steep walls of rock, it is considered one of the most dangerous places on Earth. Towers sit high atop the cliffs on both sides of the canyon, facing each other. One houses black-ops military personnel from the West, the other from from the East. For decades, two lone soldiers have...

Miles Teller certainly scored points in Top Gun: Maverick, but now with The Gorge he has really flown into the danger zone.
Valentine’s Day is certainly appropriate to release this hybrid of several genres including horror, sci-fi, action and romance, the latter due to a clever “meet cute” angle between two sharp-shooting assassins hired to guard East and West towers separated by 600 meters, below them an imposing, dense, foggy forest that holds a dark secret.
No doubt it is a lonely job when Bartholomew (Sigourney Weaver), the shady corporate operative who is one of the few who knows of the top kept secret of what the Gorge holds, recruits Levi (Teller), an ex-Marine and private contractor, a hit man talented with guns and weapons who Bartholomew decides is perfect for the yearlong assignment of making sure there is no escape from the mysterious gorge, a place of which even nine Russian heads and 13 U.

Debuting on Apple TV+ on February 14 is director Scott Derrickson’s The Gorge, starring Miles Teller, Anya Taylor-Joy and Sigourney Weaver.
Two highly-trained operatives (Teller and Taylor-Joy) are appointed to posts in guard towers on opposite sides of a vast and highly classified gorge, protecting the world from an undisclosed, mysterious evil that lurks within. They bond from a distance while trying to stay vigilant in defending against an unseen enemy. When the cataclysmic threat to humanity is revealed to them, they must work together in a test of both their physical and mental strength to keep the secret in the gorge before it’s too late.
In a recent interview Derrickson said The Gorge is much like Until Dawn and Silent Hill, “I love those games, and I do think that gaming has sort of set the bar for gunplay action, especially if you’re really with a single character or two characters,...

To say director Scott Derrickson likes to take his time between movies would be an understatement. His 2016 MCU hit Doctor Strange wasn't followed up until five years later by the 2021 horror smash The Black Phone. Now, four years after that, his latest thriller The Gorge is set to debut on Apple TV+ on Feb. 14, and first reactions to the film have revealed if it's worth the wait.
Folks who got an early preview of The Gorge are taking to X to share their thoughts about Derrickson's latest, which stars Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy as two snipers hired to guard either side of a deep and impenetrable gorge, without knowing what actually lies beneath them. Thus far, reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, which comes as no surprise, as Derrickson is the same person behind other hits like Sinister, and The Exorcism of Emily Rose; two movies that clearly prove the...

You might not expect a film by Scott Derrickson to feature a sexy dance scene set to a song by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but you get it in The Gorge, his new horror romance coming to Apple TV+ on Feb. 14. "All the needle drops, those are all choices that I made, that I felt were right for those scenes," explained Derrickson in a recent interview with MovieWeb. "I wanted there to be a real dance number instead of a sex scene. It was kind of more of a sex scene in the script. And I was like, 'That's not romantic enough.' You know, I want to stretch it out. Have a real — when was last time you saw a real romantic dance scene in a movie?"
Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy are the dancers (and snipers) who guard a mysterious gorge, not to keep people out, but to keep something in.

The Black Phone was one of the best movies of 2022 and one of the best horror films of the decade so far, but it was almost completely self-contained. Things seemed wrapped up in a truly satisfactory way by the end of the movie, and the villain (played to perfection by Ethan Hawke) seemed completely dead. The film's acclaimed director, Scott Derrickson, put his heart and soul into The Black Phone, which was a very personal and cathartic experience for him. He didn't have a sequel in mind whatsoever. And yet, The Black Phone 2 finished filming at the end of January. What happened?
Well, part of it has to do with Derrickson's new film, The Gorge, which debuts Feb. 14 on Apple TV+. The Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy movie is a genre-blending concoction that works as both a wild horror movie and a sweet romance that represents dating in modern times.

Robert Eggers' latest horror film, Nosferatu, has received tons of praise from critics and audiences, but it just received a major stamp of approval from legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese, who revealed he's a massive fan of the film and the man behind the vampire flick.
Per GamesRadar+, Scorsese sat down with TCM host Dave Karger to discuss his legendary career in cinema, when the topic of Nosferatu was brought up. When asked whether he had seen the film, Scorsese confirmed that he had and offered tons of praise for the film and Eggers himself. "It’s amazing," Scorsese said. "Anything this guy does, amazing. And that's one [film] you don’t do much after seeing. You’re still in the world. You’re in Transylvania, and it’s really, [laughs] whoa. Man, he’s something."

The closest we've come to a solid update on Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot is a report from the trades revealing The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes scribe Michael Lesslie is penning the screenplay.
Who knows how much has changed since then but, as far as we're aware, no director is attached and Lesslie may not even be the current writer on the project.
Despite that, the casting rumours continue coming in thick and fast. Yesterday, we shared a breakdown of the actors who are supposedly in the running for X-Men. And today, we have possible Mister Sinister casting!
According to insider @MyTimeToShineH, Marvel Studios is eyeing Dune, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and Skyfall star Javier Bardem to play the iconic X-Men villain in the MCU. You may recall that he was once said to be in line to play The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Galactus.

Thanks to Robert Eggers' vampire film "Nosferatu" and Coralie Fargeat's "The Substance," horror had a surprisingly strong showing at the 2025 Oscar nominations. But instead of resting on his laurels and high-fiving Bill Skarsgård for delivering a gruesomely fresh take on the horror icon Count Orlok, Eggers has already set his sights on a new movie, the excellently-named 13th century werewolf tale "Werwulf." Oh, and if that wasn't enough to keep him working for a while, Deadline reports that he's also now closed a deal with TriStar pictures to co-write and direct a sequel to "Labyrinth."

When Wim Wenders was readying to present a 4K restoration of his classic 1987 fantasy film Wings of Desire in November 2018 in New York City, Scott Derrickson had to be there.
The German auteur is not only “a filmmaking mentor and one of my closest friends,” but he’s also godfather to both of Derrickson’s sons, Atticus and Dashiel. When the former was born, Wenders was the first guest to visit the family in the hospital. It made sense that Atticus, 14 at the time, would join his director dad in leaving their home in Los Angeles’ Thousand Oaks neighborhood to board a plane bound for the East Coast to attend the presentation at New York’s Quad Cinema.
“Wim always had trouble with the color of the black-and-white balance — both on the VHS, certainly the DVD but also with the prints — and getting the proper tone for the footage, which was running a little sepia.

With Kevin Feige dividing his attention between theatrical and streaming releases during the first two Phases of the Multiverse Saga, it's fair to say this era of storytelling has been more hit-or-miss than most would have liked.
There's still been far more good than bad but several titles have underperformed both critically and commercially. Meanwhile, an apparent lack of direction has frustrated fans (Kang the Conqueror being ditched for Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom is among the biggest changes we've seen over the past year or two).

A well-executed jump scare gets the heart racing and makes you jolt with shock and terror. Many times, jump scares don't work because they often feel cheap, a way to trick the brain into reacting rather than creating true terror. Sometimes, though, a movie does the jump scare perfectly. Think of that decapitated head popping out in Jaws, the dream endings to Carrie and Friday the 13th, or more modern examples like the jolting moments in Sinister and Insidious. One of the best jump scares doesn't get as much attention. In 1967's Wait Until Dark, there's a scene with Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin which is such an unexpected shock that James Cameron considers it the best ever done.
