Modern horror icons Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill are bringing Road of Bones to the silver screen.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the hit filmmaking duo who most recently served as producers on The Gorge are slated to bring author Christopher Golden's 2022 novel Road of Bones to the silver screen for Sony Pictures' Screen Gems. As with previous projects such as Sinister and The Black Phone, Derrickson and Cargill will share writing duties, while Derrickson will helm the film as director. Road of Bones is the first project to emerge from the first-look deal Derrickson and Cargill's Crooked Highway reached with Sony/Screen Gems.

Christopher Golden’s page-turning 2022 horror novel introduces an intense road trip set in Siberia. Director Scott Derrickson is returning to horror for his next project. The filmmaker behind movies such as Marvel's "Doctor Strange" and the Apple TV+ original "The Gorge" is working once again with his creative partner C. Robert Cargill on an adaptation of the 2022 novel "Road of Bones," according to The Hollywood Reporter. The project has been set up at Sony Pictures' Screen Gems, where Derrickson and Cargill's production company Crooked Highway has a first-look deal.

Derrickson is set to direct the film. He will also co-write the screenplay alongside Cargill, whom he's worked closely with ever since 2012's breakout hit "Sinister." The duo will also produce the movie, which is based on Christopher Golden's novel, which was published by St. Martin's Press. There's no word yet on who will star in the adaptation, or how soon production will get underway.

Bones is a supernatural thriller set in Siberia along the Kolyma Highway, a real highway that was built in Stalinist Soviet Union using the labor of prisoners from the region’s gulags. Lore has it that hundreds of thousands of inmates perished during the construction of the 2000 km road and due to the permafrost, it was judged easier to just built atop of the bodies.

Drawing inspiration from genre staples like [Rec] and V/H/S, The Last Cabin combines found footage, survival horror, and home invasion.

Scott Derrickson’s The Gorge is a film that proudly revels in its absurdity, a hybrid of genres stitched together with the confidence of a director unafraid to push the limits of plausibility. Equal parts military thriller, sci-fi horror, and starry-eyed romance, it’s the kind of film that begs you to leave logic at the door and simply enjoy the ride. And for a while, it works. With Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy delivering charismatic performances, and some impressively weird creature design lurking in the depths, The Gorge almost succeeds in being the gloriously over-the-top spectacle it aspires to be. Almost.

The premise is delightfully ridiculous. Levi (Teller) and Drasa (Taylor-Joy) are elite snipers stationed on opposite sides of a vast, mist-filled gorge, tasked with preventing whatever lurks below from escaping. Their only human contact is each other – though their respective military handlers forbid communication. Naturally, this rule is ignored almost immediately.

Horror has many tropes, but one of the biggest is the jump scare. They've become commonplace in the genre over the decades as an easy way to get an audience to react, but while some, such as in Sinister and Insidious, are very effective, in lesser films, they've become an overused cheap tactic that's more about creating a physical response rather than building up true tension. There was a time though when jump scares were a rarity, which made them work more when they were used. The first ever jump in a feature film is also one of the best. In 1942's Cat People, director Jacques Tourneur and producer Val Lewton created a jump scare that will make you jump out of your seat, not out of laziness, but in brilliant and purposeful misdirection.

You probably don't have "Geoffrey Rush and John Lithgow going at each other's throats" on your 2025 Bingo card. It's worthy of note how, even though Lithgow is the villain in their new thriller The Rule of Jenny Pen, he gets top billing over Rush, an Oscar-winner from The King's Speech. It's a film that relishes its villainy, and Lithgow is riding hot after his standout — and also villainous — turn in Edward Berger's red-hot feature, Conclave. Lithgow remains very much in the news after being cast as the iconic Dumbledore character in the new and highly anticipated Harry Potter series (and being a funny part of the recent 97th Academy Awards telecast).

Scott Derrickson’s The Gorge didn’t get much fanfare in the UK at least – but it’s proven a sizeable hit for Apple TV+.

A week or so ago, Maria took a look at the new movie from director Scott Derrickson and writer C Robert Cargill, The Gorge. Derrickson and Cargill are an effective pair, having collaborated on films such as The Black Phone, Sinister and Doctor Strange, among others. They’ve been working on The Black Phone 2 as well, but snuck The Gorge in first.

It debuted last week on Apple TV+, and in the UK at least, to barely any fanfare. Publicity seemed light, the press tour never made it this far, and it seemed like it was dropped onto streaming and left to be.

The Gorge had Apple TV+’s biggest film premiere since the streaming service launched in 2019.

Deadline reports that the genre-bending thriller from Scott Derrickson eclipsed Jon Watts‘ Wolfs, which pivoted from a wide release to a small theatrical and global streaming release last fall.

Apple does not divulge specific numbers, but the company confirms The Gorge drove double-digit growth globally and boosted new viewers by +80% weekend over weekend following its debut on February 14.

The trailer for The Gorge, Scott Derrickson’s latest genre-bending film, doesn’t really tell the whole story. It shows Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy’s characters, highly skilled mercenaries, assigned to watch over the titular gorge, where something spooky lurks. Naturally, the two fall in love and the trailer sells The Gorge as a strange action-romance hybrid, but the reality is much more complex.

Derrickson is best known for his work in the horror genre with films like The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, Sinister and The Black Phone, the latter receiving a sequel later this year. While the aforementioned promo for The Gorge doesn’t exactly market the film as a horror, it quickly becomes one, and a good one, too.

The Gorge’s ending was all about Levi and Drasa trying to survive the horrors that existed in the town at the bottom of the titular chasm. Hired by a mysterious company called Darklake, Levi was stationed at the West Tower and Drasa at the East Tower, which were located on opposite sides of a seemingly bottomless ravine. They were told to not contact each other no matter what happened and only report back to HQ via radio on a daily basis about whether they had restocked all the weapons around the abyss and checked if the cloaking devices were working fine or not. What were those weapons and cloaking devices for? To keep these grotesque-looking humanoid creatures from getting out of the hole they were in and terrorizing human civilization. Although the nature of the job was strenuous and life-threatening, Levi and Drasa struck a chord and met each other.

Filmmaker Scott Derrickson is best known for his work in the horror genre – The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister, The Black Phone – but the director has also ventured into other worlds, such as the superhero realm with Doctor Strange. Personally, I greatly appreciate his style and this time, Derrickson tries to make the most of Zach Dean’s (The Tomorrow War) screenplay and the two Hollywood stars at his disposal, Miles Teller (Whiplash) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Furiosa), to achieve another critical and commercial success with The Gorge.

Horror remains one of the most popular genres in modern cinema, and new franchises in the genre, like Terrifier, continue to find success. Naturally, movie enthusiasts expect at least a few intriguing titles each month, and this February does not appear to disappoint them in the least, as not only are highly anticipated horror films set to be released in theaters, but streaming services such as Shudder have prepared a solid slate for the second month of the year.

Aside from the upcoming horror films by prominent filmmakers such as Osgood Perkins, there is a slew of slasher horrors that will provide a distinctive experience for cinephiles, as well as a reimagining of Disney's famed cartoon character. NetEase Games has confirmed that they have teamed up with Insomniac Games to give fans Spider-Man’s Advanced Suit 2.0 from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. This collaboration was done to celebrate the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC, but there are speculations that NetEase and Insomniac will continue their partnership to roll out more skins, or maybe even heroes.

Blumhouse is a production company mainly known for its brand of horror. Notorious for bringing a number of hit horror flicks to the big screen, the company is set to bring yet another hair-raising feature this March. The trailer for The Woman in the Yard, starring BAFTA and SAG-nominated actress Danielle Deadwyler, has finally been released. The psychological thriller is set to hit theaters on March 28, 2025.

When Wim Wenders was readying to present a 4K restoration of his classic 1987 fantasy film Wings of Desire in November 2018 in New York City, Scott Derrickson had to be there.

With Kevin Feige dividing his attention between theatrical and streaming releases during the first two Phases of the Multiverse Saga, it's fair to say this era of storytelling has been more hit-or-miss than most would have liked.

There's still been far more good than bad but several titles have underperformed both critically and commercially. At this year's San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios shocked everyone by announcing that Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. had been cast as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

We don't yet know whether he's the Doom from The Fantastic Four: First Steps' alternate reality but the hope is that Earth-616 will get a new version of the villain for the McU's next Saga of storytelling.

A well-executed jump scare gets the heart racing and makes you jolt with shock and terror. Many times, jump scares don't work because they often feel cheap, a way to trick the brain into reacting rather than creating true terror. Sometimes, though, a movie does the jump scare perfectly. Think of that decapitated head popping out in Jaws, the dream endings to Carrie and Friday the 13th, or more modern examples like the jolting moments in Sinister and Insidious. One of the best jump scares doesn't get as much attention. In 1967's Wait Until Dark, there's a scene with Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin which is such an unexpected shock that James Cameron considers it the best ever done.

While on the surface, his newest feature, “The Gorge,” sounds like just another scary flick to add to his resume, there’s actually more to the upcoming feature than scares and suspense, as he stressed in a recent article for IGN.
