Home help: What’s the most affordable way to make a big visual difference to my home?
Darren Kennedy asks Chloe Vince, senior decorating consultant at furnishing and interiors brand House of Hackney, for her expert tips

When budget is a concern, a small change can make a big impact. Chloe Vince, senior decorating consultant at furnishing and interiors brand House of Hackney, says that affordability doesn’t mean sacrificing bold design choices. “Small upgrades can have an enormous impact,” she says. “When talking about affordability, we often look at transitional schemes — adjustments that shift the mood of a room without requiring a full overhaul.”
So, where to start? Cushions. Whether it’s a mix of velvets, florals, or geometric designs, cushions provide an instant style lift. “If you’re new to experimenting with print, cushions are the perfect entry point. A few well-chosen designs can instantly refresh a sofa or bed, adding personality and style.”
House of Hackney’s collections feature daring prints and rich textures, offering plenty of opportunities to play with colour and pattern without committing to wallpaper or furniture changes.

Next, look up! “Wallpapering a ceiling is a great way to create impact on a budget,” Vince says. “Imagine sitting under a canopy of painterly blooms, or embracing the moody, Shakespearean woodland theme.” It’s an easy way to elevate a space while keeping walls neutral. For those hesitant about wallpapering, a fresh coat of paint in an unexpected hue — perhaps a deep, inky blue or a soft blush — can have a similar effect, drawing the eye upward and making a space feel more considered.
Vince also makes the point that “when looking at affordability, it is also important to consider the longevity of the pieces you are investing in. Determining the point of investment is crucial when looking to upgrade any scheme.” For instance, a striking lampshade or an ornate mirror can serve as a room’s focal point without requiring a significant financial outlay. “A well-chosen statement rug can anchor a space and bring colour in an elegant, lasting way.”
She also suggests giving vintage furniture a new lease of life. “Reupholstering a pre-loved chair in a beautiful fabric creates a bespoke statement piece that’s not only visually stunning but can move with you from room to room.” This approach blends sustainability with personalisation, making your space feel curated and one-of-a-kind. Other DIY-friendly ideas include painting old wooden furniture in a fresh colour or swapping out standard drawer pulls for something more decorative and characterful.
You don’t need a full renovation to refresh a space — sometimes, a well-placed design choice can transform a room.
