Changing the world’s energy future and securing our nation's critical infrastructure ⚛️
About us
In operation since 1949, Idaho National Laboratory is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Energy's missions in energy research, nuclear science and national defense. The world's first usable amount of electricity from nuclear energy was generated here in 1951. At 890 square miles (569,135 acres), the INL Site is roughly 85 percent the size of Rhode Island. In addition to our geographic resources, the lab hosts a variety of unique facilities, including the Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User Facility. Complementing our nuclear research, the lab has numerous alternative energy and national security programs. Robotics, wind power, high-performance computing, biofuels, critical infrastructure protection, carbon management and advanced vehicle testing are just a few examples of our multifaceted research capabilities. If you are looking for a 21st-century energy or technology career, visit our Careers tab at www.inl.gov.

We're proud to support these microreactor development projects, destined for testing in National Reactor Innovation Center | NRIC DOME here at Idaho National Laboratory. ⚛️ These companies are working through a multi-phase approach for the design, fabrication, construction and potential testing of their fueled reactor experiments. They're projected to operate for the first time in DOME starting as soon as 2026 — a first step toward commercialization by the end of the decade. Exciting things to come! ➡️ R1 Microreactor, Antares ➡️ Kaleidos Microreactor, Radiant ➡️ eVinci Microreactor, Westinghouse Electric Company Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eMTV3rsV Office of Nuclear Energy | U.S. Department of Energy #microreactor #nuclear #NuclearEnergy #AdvancedNuclear #NuclearReactor #research #NRIC #INL #Idaho

Idaho National Laboratory led the removal of radioactive sources in Atlanta, supporting National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)’s mission to remove excess, unwanted or disused radioactive sealed sources that pose a potential risk to national security, health and safety. 🤝 ⚛️
On March 4, the Office of Global Material Security successfully removed a disused high-activity radioactive source from a university in Atlanta, GA. This recovery marks the 21st of 70 planned removals in FY25. Each successful recovery significantly reduces the risk of radioactive material falling into the hands of terrorists or other malicious entities, making our communities in the U.S. safer and more secure.

Critical materials, such as rare earth elements, are crucial for military hardware. They support industries like aerospace, electronics and reliable energy, which significantly contribute to the U.S. economy and national defense. Jet engines, missile systems and advanced radar equipment rely on critical materials. For instance, neodymium is a key component in the powerful magnets used in the precision-guided missile systems deployed by the U.S. military. Submarines are equipped with advanced technology, and sophisticated sonar systems, all of which depend on rare earth elements to function efficiently.
