DIRECTV’s decision to abandon its acquisition of DISH Network due to bondholder opposition underscores a critical point: the pay-TV landscape is continuing to fragment as streaming takes center stage. The proposed merger, which would have created the largest U.S. pay-TV provider with 19 million subscribers, was seen as a way to consolidate a shrinking industry plagued by cord-cutting. But even $1 billion in potential cost synergies couldn’t overcome financial roadblocks. In a world dominated by Streaming TV, the failure of this deal reflects the increasing difficulty for legacy TV providers to adapt. Consumers demand flexibility, choice, and personalization—values that streaming platforms deliver natively. As cord-cutting accelerates, the focus shifts to innovation, aggregation, and delivering content where audiences are—streaming, not satellites. The implications are clear: the winners in this shifting landscape will be those who understand streaming is no longer a side business, but THE business.

Hub's annual "Decoding the Default" report tracks the services, content, and devices consumers turn to first when they're ready to watch TV content. 📺 For the first time in five years of tracking, the combined "Big 5" #SVODs (Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, and Max) - which do not offer live TV - are more likely to be the "first stop" for 46% of viewers. Qwilt and Comcast announced a deal that will see Comcast deploy Qwilt’s open caching platform inside its network at hundreds of locations over the rollout, with the first locations going live in the next 1-2 months. The companies are not disclosing the capacity Comcast will deploy within their network or the percentage of total video traffic that Qwilt’s Open Edge platform will deliver across Comcast’s network. However, with the addition of Comcast to Qwilt’s federated CDN strategy, Qwilt says their total on-net coverage of US broadband households will be 55% at the end of this year. While Qwilt has full US regional coverage like other commercial CDNs, its on-net coverage, with many embedded edge delivery nodes, distinguishes its operation and business model. TWiRT 726 - Moving Eight Radio Stations on Maui with Russell Laferty Akamai Broadcasting bought six radio stations (2 AM & 4 FM) plus a number of translators on Maui. Russell Laferty has been building new facilities, and your TWiRT host, Kirk Harnack, is helping with the final wiring and configurations. In addition to a new rack room and (so far) one studio, Russell is moving several studio-transmitter link (STL) systems and installing new ones. One highlight of the work has been improvements to two tower sites on Mt. Haleakala. We visit the upper site at close to 10,000 feet above sea level where Russell gives us a video tour of the building. An apple a day keeps anyone away...if you throw it hard enough. While its traditionally maintained a closed ecosystem, Apple may be working on a TV and sports app for Android, finally bringing its TV+ service to the rival smartphone platform. Until now, the go-to answer for what should Android phone users do if they want to watch Apple TV+ shows or enjoy MLS Season Pass was to use the web experience at tv.apple.com. 'iPhone exclusive' are two words that usually means getting Android users to switch to Apple for platform-exclusive content and services. The launch of the TV app on Android brings Apple's content services in line with each other, similar to Apple Music. Unlike Apple TV, Apple Music wasn't exclusive to iPhones at launch. It came out with iOS 8.4 in 2015, but Android users got access to it by the end of that same year. Could the walled garden be coming down? Obviously, this change will make it easier for non-iPhone users to sign up for and access Apple TV+. But it could also signal a bigger shift in strategy for Apple with AI the catalyst. While the company has been busy with acquiring more than 30 AI companies the past three years, it's been behind on the technology front with Google, Microsoft, Meta and even Amazon taking the lead. But the playing catch up has seemingly made Apple much more willing to seek significant partnerships with both OpenAI and Google, which could signal a slightly ajar opening for a once tightly closed ecosystem door. The closed strategy may have worked in the past, but as we all know, times are changing.
