Uber partners with BYD to develop “autonomous-capable vehicles”, a headline from Verdict Media regarding the multi-year partnership to bring up to 100,000 BYD cars to Uber. The United States Department of Transportation formally awarded HAAS Alert a Prime Phase II SBIR Contract this month to further improve school bus safety using C-V2X (Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything) alert notifications. Federal regulators have struggled to stay ahead of the risks that come with innovations. Commonsense guardrails are missing, and a lack of crash-reporting requirements have left researchers like [the author] without the robust data we need to evaluate the safety of these systems." (The author acknowledges the SGO, but rightly points out that Tesla data entries are redacted to the point of being essentially meaningless, and other data reporting requirements could be strengthened.) This piece argues for NHTSA to take action. I note that NHTSA has recently looked into Cruise, Waymo, and Zoox. That's a start -- but we need to see follow through. The bill directs the CEC, the California Air Resources Board, and the California Public Utilities Commission to examine the use cases of bidirectional charging and give them the power to require specific weight classes of EVs to be bidirectional-capable if a compelling use case exists. The state already estimates that integrating EVs into the grid could save $1 billion in costs annually, so there’s definitely a use case there, but the question is the cost and immediacy of building those vehicles into the grid. #V2G #V2X #Charging

Countless industry experts have repeatedly forecasted that fully autonomous vehicles will be market-ready "in five years." 🚗 This projection was famously stated by Lyft's CEO in a 2016 blog post, where he predicted that AVs would dominate Lyft’s ride-hailing fleet by 2021. 👀 Regrettably, this five-year outlook has remained constant, with the milestone of true self-driving technology always seeming just a handful of years out of reach. 🤔 Even today, the timeline for widespread adoption of Level 5 autonomous driving is still about "five years away."
