AUGUSTA, Ga. — Brian Campbell has a home game next week. He’s a resident of Hilton Head Island, S.C,, so Harbour Town — the host site of the RBC Heritage — is familiar territory. This week at Augusta National for Campbell, though? Not so much. Campbell, who is ranked 113th in the world, is playing in his first Masters by way of his win at the Mexico Open in February. Not that you’d know it. He played the first 36 holes in one over to make the cut by two. On Saturday, Campbell stumbled with a third-round 76, but then rebounded Sunday with seven birdies — including three straight on 10, 11 and 12 — en route to a sparkling four-under 68. “For my first Masters showing,” he said, “I’m very proud.” Campbell didn’t just play well, he also played quickly. That’s because he was the first player out Sunday, at 9:40 a.m. His name was unaccompanied on the tee sheet because technically he didn’t have a playing partner. Well, he did , but the record books will show that he didn’t, because he played not alongside another Masters entrant but instead with Augusta National’s resident marker, 50-year-old Michael McDermott . McDermott’s services were called upon this weekend when an odd number of players made the cut, leaving the first pairing in the third and fourth rounds in need of a playing partner. In the third round, McDermott, who is an Augusta National member and CEO of Kathmere Capital Management in Wayne, Pa., played with Tom Kim , who called his plus-3-handicap playing partner a “complete baller.” On Sunday, it was Campbell’s turn to play with the Masters’ mystery man. Campbell described playing with McDermott as “awesome” but also “bizarre,” because he’s not accustomed to seeing his playing partners pick up their balls before having holed out, which McDermott did on occasion to keep play moving and stay out of Campbell’s way. “Kind of a trip,” Campbell said. Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world and the pre-tournament favorite, shot a 3-under 69 on Sunday to finish at 8-under 280 in a week where he could never recapture the mojo that led to titles in 2022 and 2024 at Augusta National. But he walked away encouraged by his play. “It was easily a week in which I could have gotten frustrated with either how I was playing or how I was swinging or stuff going on on the course, not hitting it where I was looking,” Scheffler said. “I was just proud of the way we hung in there and put up a good fight. A few different things happen today and I maybe have a chance in the tournaments. I wasn’t far off. ” Scheffler, who hasn’t won on the PGA Tour this year, said it was “something to build off of.” For a brief moment, it looked like eventual champion Rory McIlroy had opened the door for Scheffler when he double-bogeyed the 13th and bogeyed the 14th. Scheffler was two shots back for a moment, but could only manage par on each of his final four holes. “I felt like I had to birdie the last three holes,” Scheffler said. “Not making birdie on 15 definitely hurt. But overall the bogey on 12 kind of set me back a little bit. But I bounced back quick with birdies on 13 and 14. I felt like I bounced back really well today. He added, “I think this was the best I’ve been mentally all year. I think my game just wasn’t there.” Returning to Augusta Max Homa came to Augusta National in a horrific slump. He walked away with an invitation to return to next year’s Masters. Homa had failed to finish in the top 25 in his last 16 PGA Tour events and had missed the cut in his last five. He seemed destined for an early exit. And yet, he somehow managed to pull things together for four days to finish at 4-under 284, good enough for a tie for 12th place. That got him into next year’s tournament, barely. The top 12 finishers (including ties) are guaranteed an automatic spot in the following Masters. But it didn’t come before Homa made it interesting. After double-bogeying the 17th hole, Homa needed to par the 18th hole. He clipped a tree on the right side of the 18th fairway, but hit the green with a solid approach shot and two-putted from there. Thomas eyes Ryder Cup Justin Thomas didn’t quite have the Masters he wanted, finishing at 2-over 290 after never being in contention for the green jacket. That left him disappointed, and a little concerned about his status with the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Six players automatically qualify for the squad based on their performance in a Ryder Cup points list, while the remaining six spots are filled by the captain’s choices. Thomas was was ninth in the rankings coming into the week. “It’s a tough spot to be in, but it’s also self-inflicted,” Thomas said. “It’s a huge goal of mine, but I feel like if I keep doing what I’m doing and get in contention to win some tournaments and start winning some tournaments and majors, then it’ll all take care of itself.” 16th-hole placement The Masters moved the pin placement on the 16th hole to the top shelf in the back of the green on Sunday to commemorative the 50th anniversary of Nicklaus making a 40-foot birdie putt up the slope that carried him to a fifth green jacket. Overall the hole actually played a little easier than last year with an aggregate score of 3.02 compared to last year’s 3.03. But there were fewer birdies (10 compared to 11 in 2024) and fewer pars (34 compared to 40 in 2024). Aberg takes triple bogey on 18 Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg followed up a second-place finish in his first Masters last year with a seventh-place showing Sunday after a triple bogey on the 72nd hole did him in when he played three shots out of the sand. Bryson DeChambeau showed his true colors during a late-night interaction with some residents at Augusta during Masters week. Heading into the final round of play, DeChambeau inched closer to Rory McIlroy's lead, who avenged a less than stellar opening round on Thursday - before a historic round Saturday. The PGA Tour star became the first player in Masters history to hit six consecutive 3s to start a round, as he looks to become just the sixth player ever to complete the career Grand Slam . Despite having a historic round, McIlroy could not shake DeChambeau , with the two duking it out on the final day, a rematch of the 2024 U.S. Open . What has made the LIV Golf star so effective throughout the weekend has been his consistent practice when not on the links. The reason why the 31-year-old was attracted to Perman's house was because the latter had a world-class putting green on the premises, which caught the eye of DeChambeau on that fateful night. It was during that interaction that DeChambeau's character was on full display to Perman and his wife, Michele. Speaking with ESPN , Michele noted how polite DeChambeau was, calling him "sweet," and how the star's personality on TV often didn't match how he presented himself. DeChambeau also complimented Perman on his putting green, which featured gradations not often found on greens outside of proper golf courses. In the end, Michele claimed she would "cry" if the Californian falters to McIlroy on Sunday. Along with spending time at Perman's property earlier in the tournament, DeChambeau has been doing all he could to take another victory away from the Northern Irishman , with their practice tendencies on full display. DeChambeau has used the practice facilities more than anything else this tournament, hitting 977 range balls before play began Sunday. McIlroy, meanwhile, has hit 600 fewer balls, with his count having sat at 323. Considering the history between the two men, it's not lost on either of them that only the best will get to wear the green jacket when it is all said and done. "If I didn't want this moment, I wouldn't be doing those things. These are the pairings I want to be in, and I'm excited for that." It will be the grandest stage that we've had in a long time, and I'm excited for it," DeChambeau told reporters ." We both want to win really, really badly." The 35-year-old had a more reserved view on the final, especially as it represents a chance to exorcise the demons that have haunted him for almost a year, dating back to the U.S. Open. Telling Sky Sports on Saturday, McIlroy said: "I won't shy away from it. Situations like this are the reason I get up, work hard and try to do the right things."
