“We will honor Los Angeles as the city of dreams, showcasing its beauty and resilience, as well as its role as a beacon for filmmakers and creative visionaries for over a century,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and president Janet Yang wrote in a letter sent to the full membership of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, per The Hollywood Reporter. “We will reflect on the recent events while highlighting the strength, creativity, and optimism that defines Los Angeles and our industry.”
Therefore, the nominees for the 2025 Oscars, across 23 categories, were announced in a delayed presentation on January 23 by multi hyphenates Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang. The 2025 Oscars will be broadcast from Los Angeles's Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, airing live one hour earlier than previous years at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT. Who is hosting the 2025 Oscars?
The 97th annual Academy Awards will be hosted by comedian and former late-night host Conan O'Brien. This will be O'Brien's first time hosting the coveted ceremony, taking over the gig from Jimmy Kimmel. In an interview with ABC 7, O'Brien did not shy away from the unique responsibilities of this year's Oscars hosts: to provide levity and offer respect to the communities affected most by the Los Angeles fires. O'Brien's longtime assistant and collaborator Sona Movsesian lost her family's home in the destructive fires.
"The Oscars is a show that is very much a hometown show. It's a Los Angeles show, so what's happened here needs to be addressed," O'Brien said, wearing a shirt that read ‘Altadena’ during his interview. “It's a celebration of hard work that's been done by many people… There's a needle to thread, there's a line to walk, and I'm determined to do that correctly. But I want to make sure there's humor, that we have some fun, and that we have some joy.”
Who is presenting and performing at the 2025 Oscars?
Apart from the eventual winners, others hitting the Oscars stage this year include presenters Zoe Saldaña, Rachel Zegler, Joe Alwyn, Emma Stone, Sterling K. Brown, Margaret Qualley, Bowen Yang, Ben Stiller, Oprah Winfrey, Lily-Rose Depp, Elle Fanning, Selena Gomez, Halle Berry, Amy Poehler, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Ana de Armas, Dave Bautista, Harrison Ford, Andrew Garfield, Samuel L. Jackson, Willem Dafoe, Robert Downey Jr., Whoopi Goldberg, Cillian Murphy, and many more.
In a medley of "show-stopping performances celebrating the filmmaking community and some of its legends," per the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the six musicians performing at the 2025 Oscars are RAYE, Doja Cat, LISA of BLACKPINK, Queen Latifah for a tribute to the late Quincy Jones, and acting nominees Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, alongside a special appearance by the Los Angeles Master Chorale.
