Details 442 came from Vincent Van Gogh's The Church of Auvers- sur-Oise, painted in June 1890. The colours can be hard to read. A Van Gogh book says "the church is bathed in light against a deep blue sky", which isn't quite right. The aspect of church we see is in shade; it casts a dark green shadow on the grass in front; its light-bathed side is only to be imagined. The sky's intense cobalt blue (a "cold" colour) is made to stand for a searing heat - with the daring inflections of black only strengthening this effect. The picture is in the Musee D'Orsay, Paris.
