Obituary: John Sturges

MAY I point out an error in your obituary of John Sturges (24 August)? writes David Cresswell.

Gilbert Adair writes that Bad Day at Black Rock (1955) 'can also claim the distinction of being the first Hollywood movie ever to make reference to the country's internment of its Japanese-born citizens in wartime'. Not so. An earlier MGM film, Go for Broke (1951), also made reference to this fact. The film, based on the wartime activities of the Japanese Nisei battalions engaged against the Axis forces in Italy, had a mail call sequence in which several soldiers cynically commented on the fact that whilst engaged in the front line mail written to them by relatives in the US was sent from the internment camps.
