Sixteen passengers were thrown from the back of a pick-up truck when it overturned after hitting a hedge on an unlit road near Padstow, Cornwall, on the way to a beach party. Michelle Collins, 14, of Wadebridge, died instantly and 11 others, all between 14 and 19, were taken to Treliske hospital in Truro; two were seriously injured. The driver, Trevor Vercoe, 17, of St Issey, suffered cuts.
