THE PHOTOGRAPHER: Suky Best worked as a modelmaker in advertising for photographers, before moving into the field of restoration. She is now a postgraduate photography student at the Royal College of Art. Holiday on Earth (a detail of which is shown, left) won her the first prize of pounds 2,000 in the South Bank Photo Show, at the Royal Festival Hall until 18 July.

THE POET: Matthew Sweeney was born in 1952 in Donegal and has lived in London since 1973. Cacti, a Poetry Book Society recommendation, is published by Secker and Warburg at pounds 6.
