Terry Fenwick, the manager of Portsmouth, has returned to his old club, Swindon, to sign the 21-year-old defender, Andy Thomson, for pounds 75,000. Thomson made 22 appearances for his home-town club but has not played in the first team this season.

Joao Havelange, the Fifa president, yesterday promised the 2006 World Cup to Africa. Havelange, who will be in South Africa for the African Nations' Cup later this month, said: "Africa has won the right to host its first world championship."
