Sports Listings: Motocross: British 500cc Grand Prix - Hawkstone Park, Shrewsbury

Kurt Nicoll goes into the British Grand Prix, the seventh round of the world motocross championship, at Hawkstone Park, near Shrewsbury, with a five-point lead over the Belgian, Georges Jobe, the 1991 world champion. The world prize has eluded Nicoll, from Newport, Essex, but now based in France. A broken thigh in the Netherlands ended his aspirations last year. However, he went on to win the British championship, a competition he also leads this season. David Thorpe, the three-times world champion from Windsor, has been beleaguered by shoulder problems, but has recovered sufficiently to attempt to qualify for Sunday's race on his Honda.

How to get there: Salop Motor Club, Hawkstone Park, is 10 miles north of Shrewsbury. RAC signposted on A53 Shrewsbury to Market Drayton road or A49 Shrewsbury to Whitchurch road (Tel: 0939-200694). Admission: pounds 8 adults, pounds 2 children. Qualifying starts at noon on Saturday (reduced admission); final practice is from 9.30am Sunday and the first race of three starts at 1pm.
