Swimming: Hickman sets 200m record for butterfly

James Hickman yesterday set a new British record to defeat Australia's Olympic bronze medallist Scott Goodman. Hickman, 21 on Sunday, broke his own national mark when fending off Goodman to win the 200 metres butterfly at the World Cup short course meet in Glasgow.

The Mancunian sliced a fifth of a second off the record to move to second on this year's world rankings. Hickman, who was seventh in Atlanta, gained some revenge over the Tasmanian Goodman, the reigning world short course champion, with victory in 1min 55.35sec.

Hickman looked like destroying Goodman, as he built up an advantage of several metres by the mid-way point. But Hickman suddenly found himself under attack from Goodman and, in the end, held on to win by half a second. China's Pan Licong was third.

Hickman later set a personal best of 24.20sec when finishing fourth in the 50m butterfly race, which turned into a disappointment for his fellow Briton Mark Foster, who was outsprinted by the Australian Michael Klim.

Foster, the reigning world record holder and European champion at the event, could not stop Klim, who had already won the 100m freestyle event, at the Tollcross Park Leisure Centre.
