GORAN IVANISEVIC'S slump continued when he was beaten in straight sets by the Argentinian, Guillermo Perez-Roldan, in the second round of the Nice Open yesterday.

The Croat, runner-up to Andre Agassi at Wimbledon last year, lost 6-1, 6-3 and was then fined afterwards for refusing to speak to journalists.

Ivanisevic, the world No 6, has had a poor start to the year. He missed the Australian Open in January because of a stress fracture of the foot and then lost in the second round at the Lipton Championships last month. He recently summed up his form with 'the way I'm playing I would be struggling on the women's tour'.

Sweden's Stefan Edberg recovered from 5-2 down in the first set to beat Russia's Andrei Chesnokov 7-6, 6-2.
