'LOCK your luggage and consider using a bicycle padlock to fasten it to the compartment, especially at night,' warns Robert Strauss in the third edition of his Trans-Siberian Rail Guide (Compass, pounds 12.95).
Other anti-crime hints for prospective train travellers include carrying your passport and the bulk of your money in a belt underneath your clothing or in cloth pouches sewn or pinned into inner linings. The guide concentrates on the three major routes: Trans-Siberian, Trans-Mongolian and Trans-Manchurian and their natural branches and extensions: Central Asia and the Silk Route; Indo-China; North Korea; and the Russian Far East via Alaska.
