Letter: London square meals

Sir: There is one type of space in London which, I suggest, is undervalued and underused, and that is the little squares dotted around Bloomsbury. They look as if they have never been touched since the Victorians planted gloomy laurels amid dreary tarmac paths and shabby grass strips.

Could they not be brightened up and used for eating? ('If only our capital were paved with cafes', 27 April.) It would bring life into these irreplaceable 'lungs' of the great urban sprawl, such as we have seen in Covent Garden.
