From the Ven G. R. Phizackerley Sir: I am surprised that Jim White's churchgoing childhood ("Death of the British Sunday", 19 December) did not teach him that Sunday is not the seventh day of the week but the first. From New Testament times onward, Christians have replaced the Jewish Sabbath by meeting on the first day of the week in order to celebrate the Eucharist by which they remember the Resurrection of Christ which occurred on a Sunday.
Yours faithfully, GERALD PHIZACKERLEY Archdeacon of Chesterfield Toddington, Derbyshire
