ADMITTING to failure is never easy, but I can only report a less than satisfactory result after taking the elementary vocabulary test in Judith Judd's article ("Tough words to test our children", 21 March).

The crisis in school teacher recruitment has been widely reported. If the subject matter related to the words in the article is typical of the general syllabus content for 11-year-olds, is it any wonder that teachers are leaving the profession in droves and insufficient replacements are coming forward?
