- Assis is a city and a municipality in the southwestern part of the state of São Paulo in Brazil. The population is 105,087 (2020 est.) in an area of 460.61 km2. The town was founded on July 5, 1905, and became a municipality in 1917, when it was separated from Platina. It is the largest city of its microregion, and the 2nd of its mesoregion, and is 434 km away from the capital, São Paulo. The town has an annual average temperature of 21,37 °C, annual rainfall 1,441 mm (56.7 in), and the vegetation predominates Mata Atlântica and Cerrado, is then a transition zone of vegetation. Its Human Development Index (HDI) is 0.805, considered high if compared to state and is in 28th place among Brazilian cities. The name Assis is a reference to Captain Assis, who explored the lands of the region. Is currently formed by the city of Assis, with its single district headquarters since Tarumã became a separate municipality in 1990. The city is known for its title Fraternal City and the undergraduate courses from UNESP at Assis, FEMA (Municipal Assis Educational Foundation) and Unip (Universidade Paulista - Paulista University). In the city, there are many industries, schools, universities, large agriculture production and strong commerce and services. The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Assis. Assis is one of the most important of region and has a privileged geographic location where there are different types of agriculture. Furthermore, the city is served by Marcelo Pires Halzhausen State Airport. Assis is cropped by the railroad old Estrada de Ferro Sorocabana and by numerous highways connecting the main cities of the region, the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná Furthermore, the city is regional development reference, with influence in the cities of Assis's Microregion, a few municipalities in the Ourinhos's Microregion, Marília's Microregion and North of Paraná by his commerce, services, cultural services, sports, science and technology that make Assis that bears the title of Capital of Paranapanema, even with strong competition from larger centers such as Marilia, Presidente Prudente and Londrina. Pertence à Região Geográfica Imediata de Assis e Região Geográfica Intermediária de Marília, localiza-se a oeste da capital do estado, distante 434 km da capital estadual e abriga uma população total de 105 087 habitantes (estimativa IBGE/2020) em seus pouco mais de 462 km². É a maior cidade de sua Região Geográfica Imediatária, além de ser a terceira da Região Intermediária de Marília, atrás de Ourinhos e Marília, além disso ocupa a posição de 77º maior município do estado (estimativa IBGE/2020), situa-se a 22º 39' 42" de latitude sul e 50º 24' 44" de longitude oeste. A sede tem uma temperatura média anual de 21,37 °C e na vegetação do município predomina a Mata Atlântica e o Cerrado, sendo uma zona de transição de vegetação e solo, diferenciando-se da região, possuindo uma coloração avermelhada porém arenoso. O seu Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano (IDH) segundo a ONU é de 0,805, considerado como elevado em relação ao do estado, em 28º lugar entre cidades de maior IDH do país. Para a FIRJAN em 2014, a cidade estava em 190º a nível nacional e em 49º segundo a FGV em 2012. A cidade também ficou com o 237º maior potencial de consumo (IPC Marketing) entre todas as cidades brasileiras em 2014 e no estado ficou na 72º posição. Também em uma pesquisa do Pnud, o município estava entre as 25 melhores cidades do estado para se viver e a no 90º lugar entre as melhores cidades para realizar investimentos em 2019 segundo a UrbanSystems. Assis foi emancipada de Campos Novos do Paranapanema na década de 1910. A sua etimologia é que o seu nome é uma referência ao Capitão Assis, que explorou as terras da região. Atualmente é formada pela cidade de Assis, sendo a sede seu único distrito desde a emancipação de Tarumã na década de 90. Assis é conhecida pelo seu título de Cidade Fraternal e pelos cursos de graduação da Unesp de Assis, a FEMA e Unip. Além disso, é uma polarizadora regional de desenvolvimento servindo de referência para os municípios da Região de Assis, de alguns municípios das regiões de Ourinhos, Marília e do Norte do Paraná por seu comércio, serviços, referência cultural, esportiva, tecnológica e científica que fazem com que Assis ostente o título de Capital do Paranapanema, mesmo com a grande concorrência de outros centros urbanos de maior tamanho e expressão.
