- Birnam (schottisch-gälisch Biorman, Biornam, auch Braonan /brɯːnan/) ist eine Ortschaft in der schottischen Council Area Perth and Kinross. Sie liegt in der traditionellen Grafschaft Perthshire etwa 20 km nördlich von Perth und etwa 35 km nordwestlich von Dundee am Südufer des Tay. Im Jahre 2011 verzeichnete Birnam zusammen mit der benachbarten Gemeinde Dunkeld 1287 Einwohner. Birnam ist gut an das Verkehrsnetz angeschlossen. Durch Birnam verläuft die A9, die bedeutendste Fernverkehrsstraße der schottischen Highlands, auf ihrem Weg von Falkirk nach Thurso. Das am gegenüberliegenden Tay-Ufer befindliche Dunkeld ist über eine Brücke mit Birnam verbunden. Zusammen mit Dunkeld wird Birnam über den Bahnhof Dunkeld and Birnam bedient, der bis in die 1890er Jahre von der Highland Railway bedient wurde. Heute halten dort Züge der First ScotRail auf der Highland Main Line und der East Coast Main Line. In Shakespeares Drama Macbeth prophezeien drei Hexen König Macbeth, er habe nichts zu fürchten, solange nicht der Wald von Birnam nach Dunsinane komme. (de)

It is located 12 miles (19 km) north of Perth on the A9 road, the main tourist route through Perthshire, in an area of Scotland marketed as Big Tree Country. The village originated from the Victorian era with the coming of the railway in 1856, although the place and name is well known because William Shakespeare mentioned Birnam Wood in Macbeth: MACBETH: I will not be afraid of death and bane, till Birnam forest come to Dunsinane. — Shakespeare, Macbeth, Act 5, scene 3. Prior to the construction of the railway, the only substantial building on the site of the present village was the church of Little Dunkeld parish, which still stands in its ancient position within a graveyard within the village. Dunkeld, to whose monastery Kenneth MacAlpin, the first King of Scotland, moved the bones of St. Columba around the middle of the ninth century, and which is notable for its cathedral, lies on the opposite bank of the river.
