- Itanos (llatí Itanus, grec Ίτανος) va ser una ciutat antiga de la costa nord-est de Creta, prop del cap Itanos. Segons Heròdot els colons de Tera (Thera, avui Santorí) que van fundar Cirene, devien el seu coneixement de la costa a un venedor de porpra d'Itanus anomenat Corobios. Les monedes de la ciutat presenten motius que recorden a una deessa fenícia. L'actual municipi d'Ítanos, a la prefectura de Lassithi, porta el seu nom. Les restes arqueològiques de l'antiga ciutat es poden visitar a Erimopolis, en l'actual districte de Itanos. Les restes arqueològiques són obertes al públic. Allà s'hi poden veure restes de cases, les muralles de la ciutat així com esglesies catòliques. S'hi varen trobar moltes inscripcions en Grec; la més famosa, guuardada avui dia al , relata una decisió del senat romà sobre conflictes i disputes territorials d'Itanos amb les ciutats veïnes de Praisos i Ieràpetra. Les restes han sigut excavades recentment per un equip internacional sota la supervisió de l'Escola Francesa d'Atenes i el Archaeological Ephoria.

- Η Ίτανος ήταν αρχαία πόλη η οποία κείται στην περιοχή της Ερημούπολης, στα βορειοανατολικά του νομού Λασιθίου (δήμος Σητείας), στην Κρήτη. Η ταύτιση της θέσης της Ιτάνου έγινε το 1891 από τον Ιταλό αρχαιολόγο Federico Halbherr, ενώ τα κτηριακά κατάλοιπα ερεύνησε λίγο αργότερα και ο συνάδελφός του Lucio Mariani. Οι πρώτες ανασκαφές έλαβαν χώρα το 1899 και το 1911 από την Γαλλική Αρχαιολογική Σχολή Αθηνών. - Itanos (griechisch Ίτανος (f. sg.)) war eine antike Stadt an der Nordostspitze der griechischen Insel Kreta. Die Ursprünge der Besiedelung lassen sich bis in die prähistorische Zeit zurückverfolgen. Die Blütezeit von Itanos als einer reichen Hafenstadt lag jedoch in der klassischen und der hellenistischen Epoche der Antike. Im 3. und 2. Jahrhundert v. Chr. war Itanos mit Ägypten verbündet, und auch aus dem Jahr 70 v. Chr. wurde ein entsprechender Vertrag mit Ägypten gefunden. Dazwischen, ab 140 v. Chr., war Itanos mit Hierapytna (Ierapetra) verbündet und zusammen mit dieser Stadt Herrscher über ganz Ostkreta. 795 wurde Itanos durch ein Erdbeben zerstört und danach wieder aufgebaut. Im 15. Jahrhundert verödete die Stadt, nachdem die Einwohner durch Seeräuber vertrieben wurden. Im Rahmen von archäologischen Ausgrabungen wurden unter anderem die Überreste einer byzantinischen Basilika freigelegt. In der Nähe der historischen Stätte befindet sich neben zwei kleineren Stränden auch der Badestrand Erimoupolis Beach. Er wird vor allem von Einheimischen am Wochenende frequentiert. Im Gegensatz zum einige Kilometer südlich gelegenen Palmenstrand von Vai ist Itanos nicht touristisch erschlossen. Die nächstgelegenen Ortschaften sind Palékastro und Sitia. (de)
- Itanus or Itanos (Ancient Greek: Ἴτανος) was a Greek city and port on the northeast coast of ancient Crete, on the promontory which the Romans called Itanum, the neuter form of Itanus, Latin for Greek Itanos.The base of the tripartite northeast promontory, today called Cape Sideros, is still called Itanos or Itano in modern Greek. Occupation of the promontory began as early as the Final Neolithic, according to the archaeology. The site of the city itself, however, became inhabited in the Geometric Period of the 8th century BC. This city flourished independently of other Cretan powers, playing a leading role in the trade of the region, even becoming, for a while, a protectorate of Ptolemaic Egypt. It became part of the Roman province of Crete, and later Christian buildings were erected. For unclear reasons it was abandoned in the 7th century AD after a life of about 1400 years. The location was lost. Archaeologists were able to locate it in the 19th century. Recently it has become a subject in ground-breaking technologies of sub-surface surveying. Some of the ruins of the classical and early Christian city are now visible in the elevations around Itanos and Eremoupolis Beaches, in the modern municipal unit of Itanos, of Sitia municipality. The east akropolis of the city was on the headland between the two beaches. The beach shown as Eremoupolis could not have appeared then as it does now, but the details have not yet been investigated scientifically. Itanos Beach on the other side went 100 yards further inland and was the deep channel of the harbor. Apparently, however, the east akropolis was not high enough or isolated enough to be a defensible fort. (en)
- Itanos (en grec ancien : Ἴτανος) était une cité côtière au nord-est de la Crète, située au lieu-dit « Erimopolis » (en grec moderne : « la ville abandonnée ou déserte »), dans le dème d’Itános (chef-lieu : Palékastro).Hérodote est le premier auteur grec à la mentionner, d’après les textes conservés.Le site archéologique, ouvert au public, est riche en ruines de maisons, fortifications et églises paléo-chrétiennes. On y a aussi retrouvé de nombreuses inscriptions sur pierre en grec, la plus importante étant un grand document, actuellement conservé au monastère voisin de Toplou, relatant les problèmes d’Itanos avec les cités voisines, en particulier Hierapytna, qui nécessitèrent l’intervention du Sénat romain. Itanos a été l’objet récemment de fouilles et d’études par une équipe internationale sous la tutelle de l’École française d'Athènes et de l’Ephorie archéologique locale. Un programme de fouilles est également mené par l'École belge d'Athènes. Des chercheurs ont mené une prospection archéologique de l'ensemble du territoire de la ville, dont les résultats sont à présent disponibles. (fr)
