Ayat ini termasuk ke dalam rangkaian Khotbah di bukit yang diucapkan oleh Yesus Kristus di Galilea (~29 M), yang dicatat oleh Matius, salah seorang dari keduabelas Rasul pertama. Merupakan salah satu ayat yang paling terkenal dari Alkitab Kristen, dan biasa dikenal sebagai "Aturan Emas" atau "Etika timbal balik" (bahasa Inggris: The Golden Rule).
