- Der Jaguarmensch war in der mittelamerikanischen Kultur der Olmeken zum einen ein künstlerisches Motiv, zum anderen ein übernatürliches Wesen, möglicherweise eine Gottheit. Die Figur des Jaguarmenschen ist gekennzeichnet durch mandelförmige Augen, einen geöffneten Mund mit nach unten gezogenen Mundwinkeln sowie einem gespaltenen Kopf. Das Motiv ist bei den archäologischen Funden der olmekischen Kultur weit verbreitet. Der „übernatürliche“ Jaguarmensch wurde einst als Hauptgott der Olmeken angesehen. - L’homme-jaguar (anglais : were-jaguar) est un esprit surnaturel olmèque lié au jaguar qui apparait régulièrement comme motif dans l'Art olmèque. Ses représentations sont caractérisées par des yeux en amande, une bouche penchée vers le bas et une tête fendue. Il apparaît largement sur les sites archéologiques olmèques, et très souvent, selon le principe du pars pro toto, c'est un élément surnaturel de l'homme-jaguar qui le représente. L’homme-jaguar était jadis considéré comme le dieu primordial de la culture olmèque, mais il est maintenant admis qu’il s’agit d’un dieu parmi d’autres. Originellement, de nombreux spécialistes pensaient qu'il était relié à un mythe de reproduction entre un jaguar et une femme ; bien que cette hypothèse soit toujours reconnue comme possible, d’autres explications ont été avancées, notamment la possibilité qu'il ne représente simplement qu’un jaguar. - The were-jaguar was both an Olmec motif and a supernatural entity, perhaps a deity. The were-jaguar motif is characterized by almond-shaped eyes, a downturned open mouth, and a cleft head. It appears widely in the Olmec archaeological record, and in many cases, under the principle of pars pro toto, the were-jaguar motif represents the were-jaguar supernatural. The were-jaguar supernatural incorporates the were-jaguar motif as well as other features, although various academics define the were-jaguar supernatural differently. The were-jaguar supernatural was once considered to be the primary deity of the Olmec culture but is now thought to be only one of many. Originally, many scholars believed that the were-jaguar was tied to a myth concerning a copulation between a jaguar and a woman. Although this hypothesis is still recognized as viable by many researchers, other explanations for the were-jaguar motif have since been put forward, several questioning whether the motif actually represents a jaguar at all. The term is derived from Old English were, meaning "man", and jaguar, a large member of the cat family in the Olmec heartland, on analogy with werewolf. (en)

Embora muitas vezes vistos em figuras de jaguares-homens bebés, este motivo pode também ser encontrado talhado em machados votivos de jade, gravado em várias figuras portáteis de jade e jadeíte, e retratados em vários "altares" (ou tronos), como os de La Venta. Os jaguares-homens bebés são muitas vezes segurados por uma figura estoica sentada. A figura do jaguar-homem caracteriza-se por uma distintiva boca desdentada e voltada para baixo, olhos amendoados, muitas vezes envergando um toucado com abas laterais ondulantes.
