Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog broke hearts everywhere when they announced their split in the trailer for The Muppets earlier this summer, and they just put the final nail in the coffin of celebrity love with an official statement confirming the "decision to terminate our romantic relationship."
Though they will continue to work together as professionals for the series, we can't help but be at least a little heartbroken over the breakup.

To start the grieving process, let's take a look at our beloved Muppets and their interspecies love story over the years.
1976: Love at first sight
Miss Piggy and Kermit first appear together in The Muppet Show's pilot episode -- and the rest, as they say, is history.
It was later revealed in The Muppet Movie that it was love at first sight for Miss Piggy, who was besotted with Kermit from the getgo when she spotted him during her pageant win.
Kermit, for his part, told CNN that Miss Piggy also caught his eye, adding that he loved Singin' in the Rain! because "Debbie Reynolds reminds me of Piggy when I first met her."
1978: Wedding attempt No. 1
Before long, the two were an official item, and Miss Piggy was trying to seal the deal with Kermit by disguising the wedding as a sketch and secretly hiring a real minister to officiate. Kermit, however, managed to avoid saying "I do," much to Miss Piggy's dismay.

1979: A long engagement
Kermit earned a gig guest-hosting The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson in 1979, but it was Miss Piggy's announcement of their engagement -- much to Kermit's surprise -- that took the spotlight.
1984: Wedding attempt No. 2
Miss Piggy and Kermit try for the altar once again in 1984's The Muppets Take Manhattan as the Sesame Street crew serves as witness, but Miss Piggy later admitted that the minister "had been defrocked" prior to the wedding -- unbeknownst to her.
If you're thinking that Miss Piggy got a bit of a raw deal, Kermit did proclaim his love for the swine to Ellen DeGeneres in 2011, despite Miss Piggy's tendency to plant stories about their relationship.
"She just puts all these stories in the tabloids about us being married, and that's a little weird," he said. "Our relationship, you sort of have to judge it hour-by-hour. Very strange."
2011: On the rocks
Kermit's comments may have been a sign of trouble, though. By the time the two were filming The Muppets movie in 2011, Miss Piggy was working as a fashion editor for Vogue in Paris, while Kermit was living in Los Angeles.
But the two came through for each other in the end.
2014: Even more wedding planning
Miss Piggy gave an interview to People detailing wedding plans -- chief among them, an appropriately glamorous Vivienne Westwood gown.
When asked how her groom-to-be felt about the wedding, she responded, "I'm not exactly sure. The last time I saw him he was still in shock."
Yikes. Not exactly the best starting point for a marriage. However, she also told Queen Latifah that the two weren't technically married.
2015: The official split
Was it the pressure to commit? Though he declined to detail the reasons behind their split, Kermit declared at the Television Critics Association press tour on Tuesday that they would continue to work together because they are both adults and professionals.
Miss Piggy fired back: "One of us is certainly professional."
The separated couple posted an official statement on their respective social media accounts, officially obliterating any hope we had left in celebrity love. (It's been a rough summer.)

If they're still going to work together in such close quarters, here's hoping these crazy kids find a way to work it out.
The Muppets premieres on Sept. 22 on ABC.
