Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce disguised his play-off disappointment to pay tribute to former Manchester United team-mate Dion Dublin.

Dublin, on loan from City's sworn enemies Aston Villa, grabbed the equaliser for Millwall nine minutes from time.

And with the second leg of the First Division play-off semi-final to come at The New Den, it could prove to be a vital strike.

It was Dublin's third goal in six games and Millwall have remained unbeaten in that time.

Bruce went over to congratulate Dublin on his performance after the 1-1 draw, played out in front of just over 28,000 fans.

"I have played with Dion and he is a good professional," said the Birmingham boss. "He has been a good signing for Millwall.

"But I was disappointed with the way we conceded the goal. We have worked the last two or three days, knowing we can't afford to give him a free header.

Bruce said: "The lads are naturally a bit disappointed at the result but that's only human nature.

"These games are always very tight, everyone is a bit nervous as the prize is so big.

"I just wished that we could have held onto our lead with only 10 minutes remaining.

"It will be a tough game at Millwall, no doubt about that. But we will be ready for them. It is only half-time after all."

Millwall manager Mark McGhee said: "It will still be a difficult task for us at The New Den and the onus will be on us to go and win the game.

"There is no chance of our players thinking the hard part has been done."
