I can not even begin to describe how much I loved this book. (I might even like it more than The Fault in Our Stars- which is really something, because I base all of my 'favorites' on how much I like TFiOS)
I have to say, when I first saw this book, I wasn't really interested. I didn't know what it was about it, I just didn't want to read it.
Boy, was I wrong.
Ironically enough, I hated Alaska most of the book. I understood why she was the way she was, but I just didn't like her. Her character was well written, and I found her mood swings kind of hilarious.
Takumi and the Colonel. Are there words to describe their awesomeness? Takumi's fox hat, and the Colonel general down-to-earth-ness made me really like them. I wish we could of seen a bit more of Takumi. I was really pleased that he wasn't the stereo-typical Asian dude. He actually had a semi-big part of the story, and I really liked that. As for the Colonel... he's just awesome. I found his wittiness and i-ain't-taking-your-crap attitude awesome, and extremely well written.
Pudge.... I can't really say how I felt about Pudge. For the first half of the book, I couldn't stop imagining this conversation:
Hula Teacher: Lilo, why are you all wet?
Lilo: It's sandwich day. Every Thursday I take Pudge the fish a peanut butter sandwich...
Hula Teacher: "Pudge" is a fish?
Lilo: And today we were out of peanut butter. So I asked my sister what to give him, and she said 'a tuna sandwich'. I can't give Pudge tuna!
[whispering]
Lilo: Do you know what tuna *is*?
Hula Teacher: Fish?
Lilo: [hysterical] It's fish! If I give Pudge tuna, I'd be an abomination! I'm late because I had to go to the store and get peanut butter 'cause all we have is... is... stinkin' tuna!
Hula Teacher: Lilo, Lilo, why is this so important?
Lilo: [calmly] Pudge controls the weather.
(Which is really sad when you realize that Lilo's parents died in a car crash because of weather, but I digress)
I both loved and hated Pudge. I kind of felt that his love for Alaska kinda came and went, depending on what he was doing, and what Alaska was doing. However, despite that, I think that he was a somewhat accurate representation of what an actual person would be like in his kind of situation.
All in all, I loved this book,(It's John Green, why wouldn't I?) and I hope that maybe one day I will be able to write as well as him.
This book will have a permanent place on my favorite shelf, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of John Green, or people just looking for a good read. (Pun not intended, I swear)
I go to seek a Great Perhaps
Maybe I'll even see the Colonel, Alaska, and Pudge there.
