LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers on Tuesday activated pitcher Alex Wood from the 60-day disabled list in hopes that he will be a factor down the stretch and possibly in October as a left-handed arm out of the bullpen.
Wood last pitched for the Dodgers on May 30, and had arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow on July 20 in New York. He was rehabbing at the Dodgers’ facility at Camelback Ranch in Arizona, and rejoined the team over the weekend.
In 10 starts for the Dodgers this season Wood had a 3.99 ERA, with 62 strikeouts and 19 walks in 56⅓ innings. The 25-year-old with 77 career starts under his belt pitched in relief for parts of the 2013 and 2014 seasons with the Braves, putting up a 3.16 ERA in 31 appearances, with 42 strikeouts and 11 walks in 37 innings.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Wood, the Dodgers designated pitcher Bud Norris for assignment.
Norris had a 6.54 ERA in 13 games with the Dodgers, including nine starts, with 42 strikeouts and 21 walks in 42⅔ innings. He was acquired from the Braves on June 30 at a time when the Dodgers were in desperate need of a starter, and for a while Norris filled that role, putting up a 4.28 ERA with 32 strikeouts and six walks in his first five starts, winning three.
But since leaving his July 31 start with back stiffness and missing 2½ weeks on the disabled list, Norris has a 11.20 ERA, allowing 18 runs (17 earned) in 13⅔ innings, with more walks (13) than strikeouts (10). In September, Norris has pitched just twice in 19 games, both in relief, and was passed over for rookie Brock Stewart to start on Saturday in Arizona.
The Dodgers remain with 36 players on the active roster, including 19 pitchers and 17 position players.
