Alphaliner's report has drawn attention to significant shifts in the global container port rankings. Notably, Jebel Ali in Dubai has re-entered the top 10, surpassing Rotterdam, which reflects the economic challenges faced by Europe. In 2023, Jebel Ali processed 14.47 million TEUs, marking its return to the top 10 after being absent since 2019. This ascent led to the displacement of Hong Kong, which saw a 14% decline in container throughput. Rotterdam, which had surpassed Dubai in 2019, experienced a 7% decrease in container volumes in 2023, attributed to sanctions affecting Russian cargo and a reduction in European consumer demand. Meanwhile, Chinese ports, particularly Qingdao and Shenzhen, demonstrated robust growth, with Qingdao handling 30 million TEUs in 2023. Alphaliner predicts that while Chinese growth may decelerate in 2024, China's dominance in the global market strengthened in 2023, accounting for over half of the top 30 market throughput. Overall, the top 30 ports witnessed an average growth of 1.7% in 2023, indicating an improvement from the preceding year. According to Alphaliner's report, Dubai/Jebel Ali has re-entered the top 10 global container ports, surpassing Rotterdam and knocking out Hong Kong. Jebel Ali processed 14.47 million TEUs in 2023, reflecting a year-on-year increase and highlighting the economic slump in Europe. Hong Kong's decline in container throughput continued for the seventh consecutive year, with a 14% drop to 14.34 million TEUs. Rotterdam, which surpassed Dubai in 2019, experienced a 7% decrease in container volumes in 2023 due to factors like sanctions and Europe's recession. Chinese ports, notably Qingdao and Shenzhen, recorded significant growth, with Qingdao handling an estimated 30 million TEUs and vying for the fourth-largest container port position with Shenzhen. Despite expectations of weaker Chinese growth in 2024, China's dominance in the global market strengthened in 2023, comprising more than half of the top 30 market throughput. As most of the focus as far as disruptions are on middle east, now the possible CN/CPKC rail strike, and the simmering negotiations between ILA and management on the east coast, the likely abnormality of this year's peak season may deliver some disruptions of its own. It is looking more and more likely that peak will arrive early this year as importers bring forward their ordering to deal with longer transit times and continued strong consumer demand. This is being met, of course, by carriers' impending plan to implement even earlier than that peak season surcharges. Add to this the fear of a strike on the east coast at the end of September as well as an ugly election season with a very real possibility of almost impossible to believe tariffs being slapped on China and possibly all other countries imports, and God only knows what volumes could look like after peak and in the later months of the year. We could see any number of ramifications from these events like terminal and port congestion, space constraints, prioritization of higher paying spot cargo, as well as rollings of the lower paying cargo as it is left behind. It is also possible that peak season and its carrier surcharges could continue for many months instead of several weeks. On December 12, 2024, His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, officially inaugurated CMA Terminals Khalifa Port. This marks the completion of Phase 1 of the new terminal project for CMA CGM, adding 1.8 million TEUs of capacity to Khalifa Port. The terminal is a joint venture between CMA Terminals (70%) and AD Ports (30%), with a 35-year concession. It boasts state-of-the-art infrastructure, including automated gates, shore power for vessels, and solar panels to reduce emissions. The terminal also houses the Middle East's first net-zero carbon administration building. The inauguration of CMA Terminals Khalifa Port solidifies Abu Dhabi's position as a major global trade hub, enhancing connectivity and facilitating trade between Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa.

Despite claims of an industry-wide 15% to 20% capacity loss on the Asia-Europe/Med routes, aggregate capacity is 0.3% higher in effective terms compared to a year ago Effective capacity to North Europe based on actual vessel departures from Asia has decreased by 5.1% compared to a year ago due to the longer route taken by the majority of vessels via the Cape of Good Hope despite the deployment of 17.8% more vessel capacity on the Asia-North Europe route, according to Linerlytica's report. 🚢 Understanding the Recent Surge in Shipping Costs 📈 In light of the recent challenges impacting global shipping, I wanted to take a moment to shed some light on the factors contributing to the increase in shipping costs. European Routes Under Strain: The crisis in the RED SEA has had a significant impact on European shipping routes. Forced detours around Africa have stretched journey times, exacerbated by an influx of vessels and increased transshipment activity. This congestion, coupled with limited capacity on African routes, has led to a container shortage and port congestion, further driving up costs. South American Price Surge: Recent announcements of additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles by Brazil and Mexico have prompted a rush in shipping activity to these regions. Automakers are preemptively shipping vehicles, causing a strain on resources and leading to higher rates. With looming U.S. election tariffs on Chinese cargo, some Chinese companies are redirecting investments to South America, exacerbating the situation. Shipping Giants Respond: Taking advantage of these factors, shipping giants are raising prices collectively, creating market expectations of further increases.
