That’s week three of five on MIT Sloan School of Management #AMP done. So much learning with faculty and cohort colleagues alike 👬🧑‍🎓 What have I learnt and reflected on so far? - The inscredible agency we have as leaders to make strategic and operational choices, and behave in ways, that shape our organisations. - The importance of both the discipline and practice of strategy, and of recognising that leaders should shape the culture required to realise their strategies. Culture is not an independent variable. - The importance of strategic choices and sequencing for startup ventures, recognising that those choices will close off some paths. There are very distinct plays to be made. - The ways we can think about and embrace AI to improve operations and outcomes, and enable humans to enrich both working effectively with AI. - The commonality of challenges leaders face in different sectors, and the remarkable transferability of capabilities and approaches to addressing them. I’ve also learnt how energising it is to work with a super smart, diverse, collaborative, group of colleagues from all over the 🌍 Thank you Court Chilton for curating such an incredible programme ✨

Why is a 15-minute city a bad thing? Having recently appeared on a panel with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in Riyadh discussing the attractiveness or otherwise of different meta-cities I was drawn to one of their scoring mechanisms on quality of life which was highly correlated to the concept of a 15-minute city. I was surprised to read that the concept is so controversial in certain circles (see attached article from the UK newspaper, The Guardian). Although the term, popularised by the Professor Carlo Moreno, is pretty recent it always struck me that the development of cities which had organically developed in this way- thinking of the “villages” within Greater London or the communities around stations in Tokyo had created a diversity of urban planning which allowed a sense of local involvement and community attachment without limiting the ability to head into city centres for enterprise or cultural events. Perhaps there is some element of push back on anything ESG or people are still traumatised post-COVID lockdowns, but the concept strikes me as a smarter way to design an urban landscape which balances competing needs. The more you teach, the more you learn As business leaders, we have a choice, to keep our expertise to ourselves so “we look good” among our peers or to share our knowledge and experiences that inspire greatness among others. Having just returned from delivering a five-day Executive Mini MBA in Dubai for one of the leading training providers in the UAE, The Leoron Institute https://lnkd.in/dAU7UH8S, I can honestly say there is nothing more rewarding than following the second option. Having never been to Dubai before, other than a stopover or two at the international airport, my first impressions were far beyond my expectations. Working from the excellent Marriot Hotel on the Palm, my time with Saudis, Emiratis, one Argentinian and one Aussie made me lift my game as never before. As if delivering five days of content wasn’t enough, the sensory overload of the View at the Palm, Dubai Marina, the Jumeirah beach, Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall added yet another dimension to my own experiences.   You cannot help but be impressed by the wisdom across the globe that yields such creativity and productivity when people come together from all different walks of life and cultures. Dubai was a desert a mere 36 years ago. Of course, it does not come without rightful criticism and concern for the well-being of fellow human beings in the pursuit of goals and outcomes. We should never ignore the impact of our intentions as leaders when it causes real hurt or distress, especially when it can be avoided. We should always demonstrate mindfulness and care to make amends should something we do be a misjudgment. Life affirmation of seeing growth in confidence and collaboration over such a short time was demonstrable as the group with whom I was working came together as one. Two actually, as we created two teams designing a new business from scratch. Watch out for a cloud kitchen and improved Stadia operations for the World Cup in 2034. The willingness of the staff at the Marriott, the organising team from The Leoron Institute and the executives attending the Executive Mini MBA to teach and nurture a better understanding of the world they have made for themselves served not only to enhance my own life experience and make me a better leader too but to break down barriers and create a global community that can only benefit us all. And now the more I have learnt, the more I can teach.

Fascinating survey and analysis of British attitudes towards national identity from the National Centre for Social Research.    What makes someone 'truly British'? The survey shows that heritage and ethnicity are falling in perceived importance where civic notions like citizenship or respect for the rule of law have remained high or risen.    As has been observed you might reasonably expect the Brexit vote in 2016 to mark the beginning of a period of increased importance of ethnicity and heritage, yet popular support for such ideas does seem to be in decline. At the same time British people seem more likely to be critical of British history.   Other key stats:   In 2013, 86% said they were proud of Britain’s history. Now the figure has fallen to 64%. Only 53% now say they take pride in the way Britain’s democracy works, down from 69% in 2013. Just 49% now say they would rather be a citizen of Britain than of anywhere else, compared with 62% in 2013.   Here's my provocation (tell me if I'm reaching): the growing cynicism and mistrust young people show towards the corporate world is a corollary of declining trust in established power structures and old-world concepts of nationalism. I feel like there's a great renegotiation taking place, catalysed by technology, wherein younger people are empowered to realise and define themselves more independently than ever before. There was a quote from this morning's Times which hit home when it comes to the consulting industry and specifically the challenges organisations have with MBB (McKinsey, Bain, BCG): “What you have is big consultancy armies with briefcases. They walk into organisations and confidently try to get them to fit into a predesigned transformation strategy mould. But what organisations need is a solution that works in their context.” As a Partner at a consulting firm who not only competes with MBB but often works alongside them, there is no glee in reading this but there is a first-hand recognition of the main challenges clients face when working with our competitors; they pull a 'gold standard' solution off the shelf, retro-fit it to a client and then leave them to 'execute'. Best practice insights are invaluable but only when they are used to guide and inform the design of solution to a problem. Culture, people, resources, infrastructure, appetite...being able to understand and design a solution which aligns with these things is critical when approaching any consulting engagement. The need to challenge this approach to consulting was the basis on which Elixirr was founded and it remains as important to our way of working today as it did 15 years ago.
