Purplle.com, the beauty e-commerce marketplace, has secured INR 1,000 crore (approximately $120 million) in funding led by a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA). The funding round, comprising both primary and secondary share sales, also involved participation from other investors, though their names were not disclosed by the startup. While the exact valuation at which the funds were raised remains undisclosed, a recent report suggested that Purplle could be valued between $1.2 billion and $1.3 billion. Commenting on the funding, Manish Taneja, Co-founder and CEO of Purplle, stated, “We are committed to continuous innovation and utilizing our technology and data capabilities to deliver the best omnichannel experience to our customers. ADIA’s increased investment in Purplle underscores their ongoing support as we strive towards our vision of establishing a sustainable and profitable business.” Alongside the funding round, Purplle also unveiled its largest-ever Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) liquidity program, offering INR 50 crore in liquidity to its employees. Purplle has disclosed that it has issued ESOPs to 320 employees to date, with 85 employees having liquidated INR 75 crore worth of options across three buybacks. The new ESOP liquidity program includes 26% female beneficiaries. Established in 2012 by Manish Taneja and Rahul Dash, Purplle specializes in retailing beauty products and appliances. The platform features a range of direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands such as Plum, WOW Skin Science, mCaffeine, Maybelline, and SUGAR Cosmetics. Purplle announced that it has quadrupled its gross merchandise value (GMV) over the past three years. The company stated, "Purplle is now operationally profitable and anticipates accelerating growth on its online platform, outpacing industry norms, while expanding offline stores and enhancing profitability." In the financial year 2022-23 (FY23), the startup experienced a 116% increase in operating revenue, reaching INR 474.9 crore compared to INR 219.8 crore in FY22. Despite this growth, the net loss expanded by 13%, rising to INR 230 crore from INR 203.6 crore in FY22. The Indian beauty and personal care (BPC) market is expected to achieve a $30 billion size by 2027, expanding at an annual growth rate of 10%, marking it as the fastest-growing market among large economies. Leading players such as Nykaa, Myntra, Mamaearth, and Tira are actively ramping up efforts to secure a larger market share. For those targeting UAE Family Offices, I want to emphasize the power of one word in your pitches, strategy, and vision: Ma’an. What Does Ma’an Mean? Ma’an translates to together, with, and even jointly. It reflects unity, collaboration, and shared purpose—values deeply ingrained in the culture and mindset of UAE Family Offices. If you’ve spent time in the UAE, you’ll notice that many family offices operate through joint ventures or partnerships. These models thrive on working together for mutual success. But for those raising capital for a holding company in the USA or Hong Kong—or fund managers seeking LP commitments—a joint venture might not seem like the right fit. I understand. Why Ma’an Matters The concept of “together” transcends its literal meaning. It embodies interconnectedness, shared experiences, and mutual progress.
