Excited for the ALVA10 data team to present their work on how we can make blood based cancer screening (MCED) more palatable for payers, at ISPOR today. In the US and globally, we have rising rates of cancer in younger populations, being driven largely by the obesity epidemic and environmental factors. People born in 1980 are 4X more likely to get cancer than people born in 1950. Colon cancer will be the #1 cause of death in people age 20-49 by 2030, but current guidelines recommend screening start at age 45. Screening rates in the under 55 population are... not good. In the US, that means cancer becomes more of a commercial payer issue every year, yet all the focus is on Medicare. Payers are loathe to pay for additional cancer screening- because their budgets are annual. We can use data, informatics, and genetic information to determine patients who are at elevated risk based on a variety of factors, including genetics, family history, obesity, smoking, and other factors. If we applied blood based cancer screening (sometimes called MCED- multi-cancer early detection) to the population stratified based on risk, instead of age cutoffs that are based on averages, we would 1) detect more relevant cancer earlier, 2) reduce the total cost of cancer care, and 3) improve survival. We know a lot of risk factors that are driving the increased rates of cancer in people under 55. We need to apply that information to screening strategy. A Dubai-based fund-of-funds focused on backing emerging venture investors, has raised $5 million of the $10 million target for its debut fund. Amkan Ventures is connecting family offices in the Gulf region and emerging U.S.-based VCs — two groups unlikely to otherwise meet. Key Valuation Methodologies 1. Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) Analysis: - DCF Method: This involves estimating the company's future cash flows and discounting them back to their present value using an appropriate discount rate. - Challenges: In the case of startups, projecting future cash flows can be highly speculative due to the limited historical data and market volatility. 2. 🌍 Are Foreign Investors Regaining Interest in MENA? 🚨 That's the question we've been exploring at MAGNiTT with our latest piece. Early 2023 saw major Silicon Valley players like Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, Tiger Global Management, and IVP visiting regional sovereign wealth funds, signaling potential interest. However, that interest didn’t fully materialize last year in the form of investments. This year tells a different story. In 2024, #MENA has experienced a 32% YoY increase in investor participation in the first half, driven largely by international investors. While late-stage investments remain cautious, these investors are contributing with smaller tickets. 🇦🇪 🇸🇦 Unsurprisingly, the #UAE and #SaudiArabia are the prime destinations for global investors in MENA. The UAE stands out, accounting for about 57% of the country's investors in H1'24. In a recent conversation with Economy Middle East, I shared my thoughts on the rise of Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) services in the UAE and KSA. With the rise and growth of fintech in the region, BNPL services are part of a broader shift towards a cashless society, enhancing financial transparency. Fintech, including BNPL, is a pathway to a financial services industry that is more accessible to the masses, technology-driven and enabling other industries. Additionally, the shift in consumer habits from cash-on-delivery towards digital payments was significantly enabled through the introduction of BNPL services on to e-commerce platforms, encouraging and enabling the shift. Around 55% of the region's population is under the age of 30 - and BNPL services appeal to a younger, tech-savvy population because it offers an easy, interest-free way to manage payments. Additionally, it contributes to financial inclusion because it provides access to individuals who don't necessarily have way to traditional financial institutions. In a region where many consumers are unbanked or underbanked, offering them the opportunity to make purchases they might otherwise be unable to afford is valuable. Here are the key points I shared: 1️⃣ Infrastructure required for AI development: Saudi Arabia and the UAE are investing in advanced data centers, data management policies, and high-speed networks. For example, SDAIA is setting policies to ensure AI development aligns with ethical and Islamic values. SDAIA | سدايا 2️⃣ Guarantees required to ease U.S. restrictions on chip exports: Both countries need to provide guarantees around the safe use of chips and cooperate with U.S. companies to ensure that advanced technology doesn't fall into unwanted hands. 3️⃣ Impact on relations with China: Despite the UAE being a BRICS member, it has maintained a balanced relationship with both China and the U.S., fostering bilateral relations without compromising economic interests. 4️⃣ AI's contribution to economic transformation: Saudi Arabia aims for AI to contribute 12.5% to its GDP by 2030, while the UAE targets 14% by 2031. Both countries are heavily investing in digital infrastructure to boost efficiency and productivity. 5️⃣ Opportunities for tech companies in Gulf markets: The UAE and Saudi Arabia represent new and crucial markets for companies like Nvidia to offset losses caused by U.S. restrictions on China.
