Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) announced a significant reduction in commercial licence fees starting January 1, 2025. Non-financial businesses will see initial registration fees cut from $10,000 to $5,500 and renewals from $8,000 to $5,000. Retail businesses will have fees reduced from $6,000 to $2,500 and renewals from $4,000 to $2,000. These changes align with the end of the Al Reem Island transition period and are designed to boost business competitiveness and affordability. After the initial excitement following the launch of the the UAE General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA) over 10 months ago, things had been relatively quiet. Until now! The GCGRA has now launched its website which features a wealth of interesting information. Alex Mackay and I take a look at some of the more interesting elements in the attached article. The breadth of opportunity within the commercial gaming sector is now becoming clear as the GCGRA identifies the types of activities for which licenses are available, including entities operating internet gaming platforms, sports wagering, and land-based gaming facilities, as well as the lottery and lottery retailers. Accompanying the launch of the platform is confirmation of the first licensee, The Game LLC (based in Abu Dhabi), being issued with a licence to run the UAE lottery. As we observed in our initial commentary 10 months ago, pending changes to federal law, it is still not entirely clear how the new framework can purport to operate given the broad overarching restriction on gambling under several federal laws and it is hoped there are further developments in this space in the near future. What cannot be doubted is how this opens the door to significant new opportunities in the UAE in a sector and industry that was not previously available, and has the opportunity to contribute significantly to the UAE's GDP. Venture funding to remain flat until the US FED decreases interest rates (which I don't see happening before Q4 if at all) 2. Dry powder is available as funds make announcements regionally...but raising funds and deploying takes time. Unlikely to translate into active investments before Q4’24-Q1’25 3. Deal activity in SEA and MENA likely to converge at some point in line with global trends (CB Insights 8th consecutive decline in funding globally!) 4. Underdog industries might see some investment with healthcare, and energy, to report increases in YoY deal flow while star industries like FinTech and e-commerce may decline With VC funding looking more and more baron, and a continued focus on early stage over late stage, start up founders will need to remain vigilant and frugal.
